“Lovely location, comfortable and lots of good food!”
Reviewed 27 February 2010

Staff are very friendly. Rooms are comfortable and clean, some with great views of the bay. The Hotel itself is well located- right on the beach, lots of great local restaurants. Bus station and pier is a 10 minute walk. Helpful info about flight, ferry times and local attractions. Great buffet style breakfast and dinner. Snack options all throughout the day. Good internet access and bar. Basic but nice pool area. I love this place :)

We booked this hotel same day and got a rate of about $100/night. The hotel is located on Lantau Island, about a 30 minute ferry ride into Hong Kong. The ferry station is about a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel. The hotel itself is suitable. Unlike many hotels at comparable prices in the city, the rooms are relatively large. We had a two full sized bed room. The room was clean for the most part. The bathroom shower had some serious horsepower! The bathroom did have a slight odor at times that smelled like maybe some molding (humid area). Wasn't unbearable. We had to pay for our internet access. It wasn't exactly cheap, but not ridiculous (can't remember the exact price).

The hotel staff was very friendly and accommodating. There was free breakfast buffet provided in our package, which was nice. The breakfast had cereal, toast, fresh fruit, vegetables, variety of cooked meats, noodles, hashbrowns, yogurt, coffee, water, orange juice, apple juice. Not a bad spread. The restaurant that has the breakfast also has reasonably priced food throughout the day (I think they close pretty late around 10 or 11 PM)

The hotel was a good base of operations for our time in the Hong Kong area. Also, on Lantau Island there's some sights to see (Po Lin Monastery and large Buddha). You will probably have to take a cab from the airport, which is a little more expensive than the other methods of transport in Hong Kong. The ferry was extremely cheap, I recommend getting an Octopus pass that you can use for ferries and the metro as well. You can cash out any unused portion before you leave at any metro station.

The area felt safe, we were there for New Year's so we came in pretty late (around 2 AM). The only people out and about were the non-threating teenagers hanging out at McDonalds and riding bikes.

Stayed here for a few nights on way to Australia. It is in a quiet town on Lantau island and it is reasonably cheap to gat a taxi to the airport. We took the ferry from the pier (10 min walk) to Hong Kong Island. The ferry was incredibly cheap and air conditioned and didnt take to long.
The hotel is well located if you do not want to be in the central hustle bustle of the city. the room we had was a good size and was comfortable and clean. The air conditioning was fantastic in the extreme humidity. Breakfast was good, with a good choice of western foods. The staff were all helpfull and overalla pleasant stay.

We booked a night on a weekday through Airasia website for about HK$613. It is very much more expensive to book direct with the hotel. Room rate is HK$850 for a friday. The reception staff are not that friendly and helpful. We stayed in one of the renovated room at the main building. We wonder about the reviews given here that rooms are clean as we found sand on the bed. It could only mean the maid did not even change the sheets. It was quite late at night so we have no choice but to brush off sand with a towel. We informed the staff in the morning and they could not comment. For an overpriced room rate, we would at least expect clean sheets on the bed. We did not eat at the restaurant except for breakfast as it was always empty or with only few tables occupied. We would rather eat at the small eateries in the town which are only walking distance away and where the locals hang out.

We checked out immediately the next morning and checked in at another smaller inn just further up the road. We got a small room but with balcony that faces the beach for only HK$500 for a Friday and HK$650 for a Saturday. At least the girl at the reception in this inn is helpful and friendly.

This hotel is extemely overpriced for what it is. It charges the same price as many better full service hotels, but is basicly only a motel on the beach. It is very hard to get to from the main city and the restaurant is VERY expensive. Luckily there are some very reasonable alternatives nearby. It is worth no more than HK$400 per night. I stayed fo 2 nights before changing to another hotel and the second day the room was not cleaned properly. The tea was not replenished and the previous days waste was left uncleaned, and we had no soap in the shower on either night.

Stayed here for a relaxing few days. Would definitely return for longer.

The 2 storey hotel is the largest building on the bay. Everything else seems to be low rise private accommodation. In Oct the beach was pretty much deserted & the hotel was quiet. As other's have said, the hotel offers motel style accommodation which is clean & more than adequate. The room had air con, TV, fridge, kettle and was spacious. The furnishings are simple & the facilities are quite dated in places (the 70s style bathrooms especially) but the room rate was very good. Nice outdoor pool area or you can swim in a netted-off area of the bay (lifeguards on duty). Hotel has a large resturant serving a buffet style breakfast & dinner, although we ate at one of the nearby seafood restuarants. Hotel has a small bar (fairly expensive) and there's a bar by the ferry terminal run by some Scottish ex-pats, who serve cocktails with generous measures! You can easily explore Lantau from here - cheap frequent buses link to most places, including Po Lin Monastery.

Mui Wo/Silvermine Bay is served by a frequent ferry service from Pier 6 of the HK Central ferry terminal (slow ferries take 50mins, fast ferries take 30mins). Arriving at Mui Wo ferry terminal it's then a 10min walk around the bay to the hotel.

We stayed 2 weeks at the Silvermine and had a brilliant time. I would highly recommend it! We originally booked a place on Kowloon and thankfully found out about the Silvermine before going and so were able to book there instead - we are so glad we made the switch. The city itself is too busy and noisy to stay in, especially if you have young children. The Silvermine offers the quietness of an island location, a good sized pool and an excellent location right on the beach. The centre of Hong Kong itself is just a 30 minute ferry ride away (available every 30 mins or more).

The room was great (we stayed in the main building with a sea view) - clean, having a fridge, kettle, cable TV and endless supply of hot water for baths and spotless bed linen changed daily.

The staff were excellent and went out of their way to help us.

We had breakfast there daily which really set us up for the day. Buffet style with fruit juices, coffee, tea, cereals, yogurts, eggs, cooked breakfast. The restaurant overlooks the sea and you can sit in or outside.

The Silvermine is a great place to stay and being based there really did make our trip a definate trip of a lifetime - we would love to go back!!
