Description: The no reservation tapas bar 22 Ships has become one of Hong Kong hottest tables since opening in October 2012 - offering an eclectic menu of modern tapas, served in a buzzy yet relaxed setting, and a dynamic list of sherries, wines, spirits and Spanish beers. Using the best of both European and Asian ingredients, Michelin-star Chef Jason Atherton and 22 Ships’ Executive Chef Lee Westcott bring a modern touch to traditional classics. Westcott, who has strong a Michelin background and has worked with acclaimed chefs such as René Redzepi at Noma, was Head Chef at Tom Aikens Restaurant in London before taking up his role of leading the kitchen at 22 Ships

Had lunch at 22 Ships in Wanchai. When we ordered from the menu, we were thinking the food was quite pricey for tapas. Then we quickly understood why - everything was decently prepared in nice presentation.

The seafood was tasty. Scallops were very fresh; and the seabass with artichoke was perfectly cooked. We also had the pork and foie gras mini burgers which were very juicey.

We ordered 6 food items from the menu and a glass of sangria. The total bill was around HK$620. Like usual tapas bar, no table reservation will be accepted. And they do not charge service, so be prepared to tip more generously. I will go back again.

The food and atmosphere is worth a visit at least. However, do note that there is a policy of no reservation. My own policy is either I am there at 6pm when it opens or I won't be there at all. The place is packed and it probably sits no more than 30-35 in a very small place. If you are claustrophobic, please avoid.

If informality and tapas are your thing, this place is great. There is no booking though so you take your chance but the food is excellent and cooked in an open kitchen in front of you. Service is engaging. A great spot for a solo or couple if no hurry.

We recently moved to Hong Kong and have taken up residence in Wan Chai. Conveniently we walked down the street and into 22 Ships. Little did we know the great delight that this restaurant would hold. From the jamon, manchego and truffle toastie topped with quail eggs to the wagyu rump with delicate mushrooms and bacon to the textures of chocolate dessert we adored every mouthful.

The restaurant is small however if you are fortunate enough to be seated at the bar you have a birds-eye view of all the goings on in the kitchen - the time, precision and attention to detail that goes into every dish is mesmerising. The staff are attentive and friendly, pouring wine at just the right time without interrupting conversation.

With pork and foie gras burger, crispy fish skin and cod roe and scallop ceviche still untasted, we will be back to try the rest of the menu - and maybe even for breakfast!
