I have been to the 8th Estate Winery several times to sample and buy their delicious wines. If you like wines and you been to other wineries, then you must visit The 8th Estate Winery! It doesn't matter if you are traveling in a group or by yourself, you'll still have a great time. I'm a solo traveler, and I was welcomed with open arms on my first visit. There is even an shopping outlet in the building next door to the winery.
This is the first and only winery in Hong Kong. The winery is located in Ap Lei Chau, which is near Aberdeen. You can take a bus from Central to Ap Lei Chau, and then a very short cab ride to the winery, or just take a cab from Central, which will run about $85-90 HKG ($11-12 US). The winery is located in an industrial building, which is not unusual for Hong Kong. The entrance is the loading dock to the building. Just tell the guard you are going to the winery and take the elevator to the 3rd floor.
There you will find the winery. They have a tasting room, with a beautiful outdoor patio which looks out to the water. The tasting room is open for public tastings on Saturdays afternoon and on some Sunday afternoon. Just check their website for the tasting times that month. They also will do private tastings by appointment M-F, with a min of 4 persons. During the tasting, you will also get a tour of the production facilities to see how the wine is made and bottled. You learn how Lysanne travels all over the world to find the right grapes, and how they are transported to the winery. If you are looking to have private events, you will not find anything as charming as The 8th Estate Winery in Hong Kong!
But the main reason to visit is for their wines. I always bring a few bottles back to the States. My friends and neighbors love their wines, and where else can you get a bottle of wine that is labeled "Product of Hong Kong".
Here are some of my favorite 8th Estate wines: The Cab Franc Rose is the perfect summer cocktail wine. If you like to have anything chocolate for desert, then the Prelude is a perfect pairing for you! The Shiraz Viognier has a wonderful aroma from the Viognier with great balance and body from the Shiraz. This wine and the Grenache is being cellared in my wine collection.
So if you live or just visiting Hong Kong, I would highly recommend a visit to The 8th Estate Winery to try the wines. Who knows? Maybe you'll bring a few bottles home to impress your friends at your next dinner with the only wine produced in Hong Kong!
