“Deserves a 3.5 - Good budget hostel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 October 2011

+ Positives
Very reasonable price compared to like hostels. The rooms are clean, fair sized and their room service is thorough and on time.

Air conditioner is powerful albeit slightly on the noisy side at maximum setting

Convenient walking distance to Mongkok (where many shops and market places are located)

Live entertainment and restaurant next to lobby area

- Negatives

I got a room which was overlooking the very busy Waterloo Road and next to the communal showers and toilets. The problem was the noise of the traffic during morning rush hour and the sound of the water pipes which ran through my room during the night.

No WiFi in the rooms. Have to go down to lobby area.

Advice

Ask for a room that is NOT overlooking Waterloo Road and next to the shared shower and toilets.

Bottom line

Basic 'all you need' and no nonsense hostel situated in a prime location with reasonable customer service. I recommend it.

Room Tip: Choose a room that is NOT facing Waterloo Road.or next to the communal showers and toilets

We stayed here from 20/10/2011 to 22/10/2011 for 2 nights after our 3 nights stay in Rambler Oasis Hotel in Tsing Yi.

The hotel room looks old but is spacious and clean. Location is good, in the city area, but takes about 15 min walk to the nearest MTR station. Internet access is not available in the room, but is FOC in the lobby. Taxi (RED) from this hotel to the airport is around HKD180.

Pros: Clean and spacious.
Cons: Old furniture, quite far to the nearest MTR station.

The rooms are clean and fair sized. Toilets are also clean. Not much of the amenities except a TV, which has mostly Chinese channels and an air conditioner. The staff is courteous and kind of helpful. Compared to tariffs in other hotels in and around Hong Kong this one offers a very low tariff of around $ 50-60 per night without breakfast. For breakfast you may have to shell out $ 80 appx extra. Location is bit disappointing as nearest MTR station is a good 15-20 minutes by walk.

My daughter and I stayed for 6 nights at the Anne Black in September 2011. It was exactly what we wanted. We had a twin room with private bathroom. It was basic and clean. The room had a very good fridge, adequate TV, desk, storage and comfy beds. The linen and towels were regularly changed and the room was cleaned every day. There was plenty of hot water all the time. The A/C worked well. (and it was very hot whilst we were in HK - 34 degrees every day).

The little cafe was fine although we never ate there only had drinks, but it was always fairly busy. The reception had good free WiFi. It appeared to be a safe place (and area) for a single female traveller.

It is a little out of the way, perhaps, for people who don't know HK very well (this was visit 10 for us) but it was convenient for the MTR (especially for trips into the New Territories) - about 15 minutes stroll in the very hot weather, 10 minutes walk if the weather had been cooler!

The price of the accommodation was very reasonable for HK and we would stay here again.

This was my first time to try a hotel with a shared bathroom and I was honestly apprehensive how that would turn out. Thankfully, the bathrooms were cleaned daily and were well-maintained. In the 4N3D that we were there, I only encountered another guest once inside the bathroom.

The hostel is about 2 kilometers away from Nathan Road and the nearest MTR station. Rooms are clean but a little old and musty, there are sinks inside the room so you can do your basic cleaning without leaving your room.

Very good value for money.

It's a basic hotel. Ours has a full bath, 2 twin beds, a desk, AC and a small TV. The room was old, but clean. It worth the price. The beds are very firm. If your need is a place to sleep, this is the hotel for you. It is not easy to find an unoccupied taxis around the hotel.

I stayed at this hotel for approximately 3 weeks in September 2011. Initially, I stayed in the ensuite room and later moved to the shared bathroom. For the money, I think the shared is best. If u do decide to have an ensuite room, please remember to take ur own shower curtain. I forgot to bring mine (even after reading reviews) and there was a messy puddle each morning. Shower curtains are hard to find and by the time I did find one, I had already moved to the other room on another floor. Staff are friendly, but elevators are small and slow. For me, however it was not a problem as I was gone for most of the day. This was my second stay at this hotel and would stay again. The hotel also provides transportation to the airport for 110 HKD or roughly 14 USD. The hotel is clean as is the bathroom and the restaurant food was decent. The blinds are raggedy and internet is expensive. I do not have wifi. Use the internet at the Chungking Mansion instead. They also have laundry services on the 6th floor for 20 HKD each wash and dry and an iron. Bring ur own soap since theirs is built into the washing machine and woefully inadequate. I also liked the adjoining book room, but no bibles are available. Bring ur own. I did not like not having a refridgerator in the room. Last year I did have one. Buy an Octopus card and take bus 7 to Nathan Road. There are restaurants and a 7/11 close by the hotel so you can buy ur own water, tea and instant coffee. Bring shower shoes and make ur own coffee and tea with the kettle provided. The staff cleans daily and leave toothbrushes, shower caps and soap. Towels are large and clean. Also, the area is very safe and the rooms with shared bathrooms are large by Hong Kong standards. It is fun to eat the warm egg tarts from the nearby bakery for breakfast. I also sampled the jellyfish with seaweed, glutinous rice in lotus leaves, sushi and other stuff bought from the nearby supermarket in front of the bus stop to get to Nathan Road (bus #7).
