“Laid Back Style”
Reviewed 10 May 2012

Once you find it (we walked past it twice as the sign is so small) you'll be pleased you did. Located in the heart of Causeway Bay, you're as close to the action as you could possibly want to be. We caught the train from the airport to get a bit of local flavour and it was easy as. Taxis are cheap, so after a long flight you might want to take that option instead. Tell the driver that you're looking for the Hotel Regal (as they'll probably know that) and if you're facing the hotel, the Jia is on the other side of the street and to your left, right on the corner. If you can see the Drawing Room Restaurant, then you're there. We found the staff extremely helpful and knowledgable about places to eat and things to do. The room was incredibly big with a separate kitchen and dining area. Breakfast was continental and the dining areas lend themselves to meeting your fellow guests, everything from MCs to shoe manufacturers seem to stay here. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Right hand rooms on higher floors would be my recommendation

Near MTR and within easy walking distance to Times Square and other shopping. Buffet breakfast in the lobby was convenient, with all coffees, juice, water bottles available at all times, afternoon tea was probably great, as well as the aperitifs, but we are never there! We did notice a few dust bunnies, and the shower blinds in our suite needed replacing, but it was comfortable and clean and we loved the furniture (Frank Gehry's Wiggle Wiggle chair in our room etc) The reception staff were very helpful. Great value for the price; I would definitely stay here again. There was a kitchenette with fridge and microwave too.

Room Tip: We stayed in a corner suite and were very satisfied

I stayed at the Jia for two nights in April 2012 and for four nights in October 2010. On both visits I was on my own and travelling for pleasure.

On the positive side, the Jia is nicely located in Causeway Bay, near both trams and trains (though taxis are soooo inexpensive in HK, I only occasionally used either). The rooms are very comfortable and have many useful amenities: iPod dock, dvd players (with movies at reception), kitchenette, separate lounge space. The decor is fairly classic Philippe Starck with clean lines, troll stools and lots of white and silver (with a touch of yellow). When the hotel first opened, I'm sure the rooms were stunning and an excellent value. There is a nice terrace (with laundry facilities), a pleasant bar, and a restaurant on site. As a single woman, I felt perfectly safe at all times both in the hotel and in the surrounding neighborhood. So far so good.

On the less positive side, the problem with minimalist, clean, white rooms is it takes a lot of effort to keep them looking so pristine, and the Jia is definitely now showing a fair amount of wear and tear. In the 18 months since I last visited, the hotel and my room definitely looked a bit less fresh. Secondly, there are only two small lifts servicing the whole hotel, and I found at certain peak periods the wait to get up/down was frustratingly long (especially when the lift would just pass your floor altogether without stopping). Finally, the breakfast is fine but uninspiring. Everything is laid out nicely enough in the lobby, but it does seem a bit crowded at times (you can end up eating your food in your lap), and the food on offer is fairly pedestrian i.e. muffins, yoghurt, juice and coffee. The queue for the coffee maker was also a bit trying at times.

Would I return again? Maybe. I like the rooms, and if I were assured of getting one that didn't look too worn and could get a good price, I would visit again. But for the price I paid on the last visit, I'm not sure the value proposition is quite as good as it used to be (higher price for more worn hotel).

Still, all in all, a good boutique-y hotel experience. Just work to get a good price on the room so as to get your money's worth. Happy travels!

We have stayed at the jia for only 2 nights, it is part of mr and mrs smith selection and we were hoping for a clean and chic boutique hotel. Unfortunately it is very dated and not up to scratch with the cleaning... It was very damp and smelt it too! We have stayed at the W hotel and the Icon in Kowloon and wanted a stay on Hong Kong island for a change, but from now we will stick to Kowloon and enjoy the star ferry ride to central.
What's more we were supposed to come back a week later but given the state of the Jia, we changed our plan and stayed at the icon hotel... We canceled jia more than 48h in advance (via mr and. Mrs smith) but they are charging us for one night stay!
We are not happy

We stayed for 5 nights during one of the busiest times in HK. I think it was a fair price. Location is great. 1 minute by foot to the tram. 10 minutes by taxi or 1 stop by metro to the HKCEC. 5 minutes by foot to shopping malls (times square etc). Other than location, the rest is just OK.

And if you stay at the suit, it spacious compared to other 5* hotels in HK.

Bring your own food for breakfast -except the French- they have croissant, jam and coffee!
The complementary bar at the reception (24/7) is a plus.

My wife and I will be sorry to leave the Jai tomorrow morning, initially the rooms seemed a little small but they are amazingly clean and functional. The staff here are what really made our stay enjoyable, they are friendly, helpful and obviously very happy working here. The free Internet, water and breakfast all make you very comfortable and we would have no hesitation in recommending the Jai to anyone visiting HK.
We,ll certainly be staying here again.
