If I'd known about this hotel earlier we would have stayed for much longer than a night. This is a hotel with a difference - it is funky, way cooler than your average HK Hotel - and there are a lot in this town. The location is fantastic - right in the heart of busy Causeway Bay, giving the feeling of being in the thick of things. We booked into a studio room and it was great - separate living and dining areas, a small well-equipped kitchen, and a small but very comfortable bedroom. Quirky furnishings and loads of storage space. There were two day beds and a sofa, so plenty of space to "live" in. The bathroom was good with quality shower products. Breakfast is a help yourself meal provided in the lobby area with fruit, pastries, toast, boiled eggs, coffee, tea and juice on offer.Dining is communal - so don't expect wait staff! Staff are incredibly helpful and courteous. Location is superb with shops, bars, restaurants, street markets,Times Square and Sogo very close. The MTR station is a few minutes away. Free wi-fi throughout, afternoon cake and complimentary glass of wine in the late afternoon. Don't go if you like staying in large hotel chains, but do go if you want more of an experience in Hong Kong. We will definitely return!

Room Tip: There was a lot of construction work going on nearby, so ask for a quiet room if you'll be there...

I didn't check many Hong Kong hotel prices and locations before we went there, but it does seem that Hong Kong is expensive. Armed with this basic understanding, and checking out the casual mention of this hotel by someone at the next table in a retaurant we had gone to, months earlier, the J Plus Boutique Hotel did seem rather unique. So we booked it for about a six-night stay. There are many reviews of the hotel on Tripadvisor. A main comment was that it was hard to find the entrance - and this, from my own experience, is true. But perhaps only the first time. It is simply the first entrance on Irving street, moving away from the (southwest?) corner of the intersection of Irving St. and Pennington Street. The Regal Hotel is on the other (eastern) end of Irving Street, but on the other side of the street.

What is nice about the J Plus is that, to me, it is in a relatively quiet area in Causeway Bay. Yet a short walk north on Jardine's Bazaar St. (like an extension of Irving St.) quickly puts you into a crowded, Chinese-flavored commercial area that introduces you to the next intersection - the exciting commercial, well-populated world of Hennessy Street. Malls, stores, double-trolleys and nearby underground train station (Causeway Bay Station), and crowds, crowds, crowds, make the J Plus a good base to use for a Hong Kong stay. You learn what Hong Kong fells like. It is an exciting place. We could go to Kowloon, Central (downtown) with the convenient, crowded, but not rowdy, metro.

The hotel has only a few rooms on each floor. I don't know if it was originally one or two buildings that were converted to hotel use, but whatever, our room had a few windows with drapes, and an open design that included small kitchenette, sitting area with loveseat, TV, and queen bed. There is a desk area and closets with shelves and hangers, as I recollect. And of course a bathroom. Style is simple. Utilitarian. And the overall cost seemed reasonable.

The self-service breakfast downstairs provided a modest but adequate selection of items. Coffee and hot water were provided by what looks like a European-style dispenser unit. I found this less practical than if there were a few urns or decanters with hot water or coffee that you pour into cups yourself. The flow rate from the dispenseer seemed rather slow. And it needed refilling, which the staff did, when notified. Not a big deal. The lobby area seemed rather strained in terms of places to sit and put food. The tall metal chairs didn't seem to fit the tables. The overall design was a bit over-the-top - funky, in a somewhat strained sort if way. But you don't spend much time there and it does perk you up just looking at it when you leave or return to the hotel.

The hotel staff were very accommodating and helpful. An A rating to them. And the place tended to have a youthful guest base - nice - though there were some younger people, with children, and some older. So - worth considering.

I booked it on-line, directly. It seemed to me that the web site could use an upgrade. But the reservations system worked.

Room Tip: We were not high up, but I don't recollect much noise.

This hotel was very well located in the shopping area, you could just walk everywhere, and subway was very near (4 min walk). Many places to eat and shop!

It's a little bit different from what you see in pictures, everything is smaller, and it doesn't have that "new" feeling, but it was fine.

Breakfast is very limited, and you have to share tables if you want to seat. Nothing that bothered me, but if you're expecting pancakes, or maybe fried eggs, that's not what you'll find (they had white and brown bread, butter, jam, boiled eggs, some croissants and fruits like: apple, dragon fruit, banana)

The only thing that bugged me was the bed. We didn't find it comfortable, it was hard and not so big. Shower was OK, and it was very useful to have the kitchenette in room. The other super plus was self laundry at the second floor.

If you're on a relaxed trip, it's perfect, if you're looking for something more "Boutique-ish" it isn't, since it's more like an apart hotel.

For us, it was just fine, location was what saved the experience. Also, staff is very friendly and will help you with anything.

This Philip Stark property is still one of the best bargain in town. Not a real hotel more a residence this stylish design place got very big rooms, and in a central location, just be careful when you got out of your taxi before check in, they can not stop close to the hotel.

I have to admit that our first impression of J Plus fell short of positive for a number of reasons but the longer we stayed, the more we experienced, the more we fell in love with this great little boutique hotel.

Here are the initial not-so-good experiences:

- the hotel is hard to find. In fact, you'd be forgiven for walking straight past and not even seeing it as it's signage is inconspicuous.
- when we walked into the hotel 'foyet', there was a staff member rearranging apples in the fruit bowl who took one look at us and then turned back to his apples. Meanwhile, here I was with a 4 year old hanging off one arm, a 2 year old on the hip, a stroller dangling from my shoulder all while tring to juggling two bags. My husband was behind us trying to wheel 2 large suitcase and two cabin sized suitcases without knocking anyone over. We were not impressed.
- the lift is teeny tiny. 2 adults and 2 kids and already that was a tight fit.
- the corridors upon exiting the lift and before entering the rooms, is very very tight. Claustrophobias beware.
- Getting into a taxi when leaving is also a bit of a drama. Due to the hotel being on a corner block, taxis can't stop right outside, instead having to park 20 metres down the road and across the street. This makes it a logistic nightmare when you have a fair few pieces of luggage!

The pros:
- The location of this hotel is fantastic. Only one block away from Causeway Bay MTR station, SOGO department store, Forever 21, GAP, TImes Square etc. You step outside the hotel and immediately have 2 streets full of dining options to pick and choose from, as well as 2 convenience stores for all the necessities.
- a simple breakfast of fresh bread rolls, buns, toast, juice, fruit and coffee is provided. Not essential for a place like HK but a nice touch
- the hotel provides complimentary use of their 3 washing machines (with detergent) and 3 dryers. A MUCH appreciated facility for our family of four!
- the hotel building has been converted from an old residential block so the one bedroom suite is essentially an apartment - complete with kitchen (with full sized fridge!), living room, dining room and table and bedroom. There's also plenty of storage iavailable n the form of built-in cupboards.

In summary, this hotel is not for you if you need the glitz and glamour of hill-top driveways, large lobbies, dangling chandeliers and spacious public areas within hotel grounds. However, if you're like us and prefer a dainty boutique hotel in a good location and prefer to have the space inside the room you're staying in rather than the common areas, then you'll love J Plus.

Room Tip: I would definitely recommend the one bedroom suite. For the price of a studio suite at a big chain h...

My wife and I stayed in J Plus for 3 nights in mid-january. We prepaid for a suite which was very spacious and well laid out. Nice size bathroom, lounge and bedroom. The room felt more of a flat/apartment than a hotel but this suited us fine.

The room and hotel was very clean and the staff where always helpful in ordering taxi's etc for us.

Breakfast was a normal continental affair but perfectly fine. We took the food up to our room so did not experience eating in the lobby but I cant see it being an issue.

Only niggle was our aircon which constantly blasted out cold air. A heater which was already in the room solved the problem.

The location is fine if you want to stay in Causeway Bay.

All-in-all I would recommend this hotel - good value, good size rooms/suite and friendly staff.

This is our first time staying in this hotel and it was a great experience! The location is superb, close to the Causeway Bay MTR and Times Square. While this hotel does not have a driveway of its own, taxis will likely stop along the side of the road for you, the hotel concierge team will help to get a taxi for guests especially those travelling to the airport.

We stayed in a 1 bedroom suite and it was very warmly furnished complete with the touches of home. Our room on the 8th floor did not come with much view, but we are not expecting much either. The room came with a pair of extremely comfortable room slippers, and made us feel like we were back at home. Room was spacious with a dining table, day bed, TV couch and even a small kitchenette, a lot bigger than what we expected. It was also kept very clean.

Breakfast was served in an interesting way - it was a small selection of pastries, yogurt and fruits. We took a couple of pastries back to our room to eat in our own privacy and comfort. There was also a coffee machine plus the availability of juices and water at the lobby all day long for guests - really a nice touch!

The concierge was only managed by 1 person during my stay but very efficient! She helped us make reservations for dinner as well as a foot massage service (which was only 1 min walk from the hotel).

We will definitely consider coming back here the next time we are in HK.
