Overall the "Hostel" if you can call it that was okay. I would call it more like an inexpensive hotel.

I stayed in a double room for three nights. The mattress on the bed was extremely hard and not entirely comfortable.

The staff are friendly though very very rule orientated. An example is that on the third day I asked if it was possible to swap my towel for another as I had dropped it and it had gotten dirty. I was told that I had the option to purchase a new towel or rent a towel for a daily fee. Overall not a great experience.

The included breakfast was okay, nothing special but it meant not starting the day on an empty stomach.

One of our biggest gripes was the shower, it would go from perfectly pleasant to scolding hot and then back again without notice, on more than one occasion I had to jump out of the shower to avoid being burnt.

Only a short walk to the MTR and half hour or so from most attractions. Overall it is pretty good however was I to stay in Hong Kong again I would likely not stay here again. It didn't have the hostel feel that I have experienced elsewhere around the world. As mentioned before it was more like a cheap hotel and the atmosphere was very sterile.

My review is divided into four parts: location, room, service and hostel, and the amazing museum.

1. Location

The hostel is approximately an 8 minute walk from the B2 (Post Office) exit of the Sham Shui Po MTR station. The route from the B2 exit to the hostel was really straightforward, and this is coming from a less directionally inclined person. The station is conveniently located on the Tsuen Wan line, which covers all major tourist places in Kowloon (Mongkok, Tsim Sha Tsui) and extends to Central in Hong Kong Island.

While Sham Shui Po does have a reputation for being a more "complicated" area as it is largely working class, my friend and I found it a rather safe area even though we often returned to the hostel around 11-12 at night. You will still find the locals roaming about at this time! What's more, the streets are lined with old shops selling traditional Hong Kong delicacies (think wan-tan min, che zai min, egg tarts, dim sum and more!). It really does give you a glimpse into what "old" Hong Kong feels like, and their cheap prices certainly makes it all even better.

2. Room

We stayed in an extremely spacious twin room. The furniture were all new, the mattress may be hard for some but we loved it, the toilet was spacious, and there were tons of storage space (wardrobe, cupboards etc.). There was even a TV and two armchairs. They also provided a very powerful hair dryer, towels, and a big tub of liquid that can be used as a shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Wi-Fi was free too. However, we did find it a bit difficult to control for the right shower temperature (it was either too hot or too cold). All in all, it was a far better room than those of most 2-3 star hotels I've experienced in Kowloon.

Did I mention that breakfast is also included in the room price? You can choose from three types of breakfasts: Chinese style, Hong Kong style, or Western style. They were all filling and yummy.

3. Service and Hostel

Staff were helpful and friendly. The hostel is generally really new and clean, and quite "hipster" (e.g. guest drawing on walls, murals etc.). My second favourite place in the hostel is the cafe that serves breakfast, which is tastefully decorated with beautiful vintage items and drawings.

4. The amazing museum

My most favourite place in the hostel would be the museum that documents the life of residents of Mei Ho House from the 1950-1970. It was really eye-opening to read the hardships and memories of residents that stayed at this area during that period. They also have wide collections of items from that era on display: everything from report cards and children chess to movie posters and newspaper cut-outs. There are also lots of beautiful black-and-white pictures on walls and display, some even laid out in a 3D manner that makes for a great visual experience and photo opportunity.

TL;DR:

If you are 1) on a budget, 2) would like to experience more of the gritty/realistic side of Hong Kong, and 3) stay in a comfortable place, I would definitely recommend Mei Ho House.

Stayed in the twin room from 10 - 13 June.

Overall a positive experience.
Location:
- About 5 - 8 min walk from the Tsam Sui Po MTR station via the D2 exit (The hostel recommends you to exit via B2 though). Plenty of shops along the way so it was safe to walk from the station to the hostel.
- Plenty of shops and eatery in the area so you definitely would not go hungry.
- Area was not as busy as other area which was wonderful. Area seemed safe.
- Hostel is a 3 min walk from Golden Computer Complex which has plenty of deals for electronic goods.
- A good location to stay if you rather be in an area where you are surrounded by locals rather than tourists. Hostel and the area it is located in has a rich history. The area provided me with an 'authentic' hong kong experience

Service:
- Staff were friendly and generally helpful.

Facilities:
- Cafe, laundry and a convenience store located on ground floor. Complimentary breakfast serviced in the cafe was adequate. Portion might be a little small for some guys.

Room:
- Room was VERY SPACIOUS. Toilet was decent sized.
- Room was clean but there were some stains in the toilet.
- No fridge in the room.
- Hostel only provides guest with 3 in 1 condition/shampoo/body foam. Bath towels are provided.
- Bed was not the most comfortable but decent enough to get a good nights rest.

Would definitely consider staying here again due to the spacious room, which are quite rare in space constrained HK.

At a good location with a reasonable price. Clean and comfortable. Good!

We book a double bed theme room, the theme is 1980's Hong Kong. All of the decoration and furnitures have this theme, it's interesting.

Mei Ho House nearly the two MTR station, NICE!

For a hostel it's pretty expensive and luxurious, it looks more like a hotel to me. But a plus that it is located in a old part of Hong Kong, full of culture and good local food. The hostel is quite new, the rooms and the cafe look sharp and trendy. If you are a culture/history geek visit the small museum of the hostel and download the a new app that also tells something about the area (and the rest of Hong Kong): http://urbandiscovery.asia/cultural-experiences/app-2/

What a fantastic place to stay. The room was clean, modern and comfortable. The complimentary breakfasts were tasty and filling. Service was top notch. We were a short walk from the subway in an area that has a ton of great food options and a park n shop grocery nearby.

Compared to other places we looked at, this place was a steal. We will DEFINITELY be staying here next time we're in town.

I was impressed by the security and cleanliness. The restaurant is unique and the decor interesting. There is a neat little gift shop too. The services are convenient for backpackers (laundry, wifi for purchase, breakfast included). Quite costly for a private room, but I think all of Hong Kong is this way.
