It was 16 years between visits and little had changed, which is unusual in Hong Kong. The duck is the main event and fed 4 hungry males, with cold beers for 700hk $$$. Heaps of yummy pancakes to wrap the tender duck pieces. Soup followed made from the duck carcass. Yum. The service was efficient-not really grumpy. My visitors loved it. It is an institution and walking through wan chai at night is an experience!

We got a HK friend to help us make a booking for dinner. The walk along Lockhart Road past the girlie bars and working girls (mainly Filipinos) was an experience itself before we found the restaurant. It is called American Restaurant but it is all Cantonese inside. For just the 3 of us, we ordered the famed roast Peking Duck with a dish of vegetable (to make us less guilt-conscious when counting calories). The duck is cooked Beijing-style which is different from the method done in restaurants in Singapore. Personally, I prefer the Singapore-style of roast Peking duck. We were busy taking photos of the food and the locals enjoyed gawking at us.

Always a great meal at The American, but I'm now starting to realise its a genuine tourist attraction too. Good food, fast service, great atmosphere. Value for money.

local, lively and very old Hong Kong. The crispy duck was wonderfully undercooked compared to the western version and the sweet and sour shrimps were stunning. Service was fine - not at all grumpy and the huge tables full of locals toasting each other , each time more enthusiastic gave it a fun atmosphere - we were upstairs which we liked.

Been reading some of the reviews of this restaurant and having lived in HK from 1979-1983 I returned in 2013 and was delighted to see that little had changed. The waiters were renowned for being grumpy but that was part of the fun - it was always buzzing , the food was always good and it was well priced. I note a few remarks about the lack of English spoken by some staff - how arrogant and I can assure you from personal experience that if you only manage just a few Cantonese phrases ( hello , how are you , thank you ) then your visit will be greatly enhanced - give it a try and stop moaning!!
