My husband was particularly fond of Sumbar Hidup, although some locals would recommend Putri Minang, another similar establishment a few shops down the road which was claimed to be among the best Padang food in Ubud (noticed a number of Putri Minang branches around Ubud).

My personal favorite would be the Terung (eggplant). My husband digs the fried chicken leg and the spinach (he thought it was very clever to have the spinach ready to be combined with gravy of his choice).

A meal for two would be less than Rp40.000 (including additional drinks - they provide free warm water for customers dining in and a small bowl of cold water as handwash).

For you who are not familiar with it, Padang food is definitely not for vegans/vegetarians. Also not for you who believe in organic/healthy/hippie lifestyle. It is fatty and rich of spices and all the scary goodness.
This restaurant is the only Padang in Ubud I regularly visit. The food is really good, and compared to any other Padang the price is cheaper and the place is cleaner and more spacious. The staff don't really speak English but all you have to do is to point at the whatever you wanna eat so it's not really a problem.

After trying all the various Indonesian dishes I got my hands on, Padang food earns the trophy of being my absolute favorite. It's delicious, diversified, very affordable and you never have to wait for your food.

I have tried many Padang places during my months in Bali. Sumbar Hidup stands out as having the best taste in pretty much all the dishes. I loved the Rendang with its tender meat and perfect gravy. The boiled chili egg, the tuna, perkadele and the complementary side dishes (cassava leafs, jack fruit and sambals) are all great and make for a satisfying meal. I have tried the chicken and some other stuff, but didn't try all the fish, so I can't say much about those.

Including the drink (Es Teh Tawar), the price was almost always below 2 USD, and that's just crazy. Well, I guess it's local food at a local price. At times, I went back to the guy to ask for some more rice, gravy and side dishes and they wouldn't even charge for it.

The place itself is nothing special, but its clean and the staff is friendly. The boss started greeting us and at times we got a free drink as we became regulars. Also worth mentioning is that they open til 2 am which is great if you're hungry after drinks, craving for food.

I would recommend this place to anyone. On the other hand, I hope it will not become too popular with tourists and change its pricing policy, or anything else for that matter. My suggestion for change is: Give us more branches all over Bali and the world!

I hope that I won't harm the place by fueling your expectations. When you go there, keep in mind that it's not fancy and it's meant mainly for local people. I can't be the only one who got hooked on their food, though. Taste-wise, if you like Padang food, you will not be disappointed.

I wish I can return soon as I dearly miss my daily visits to Sumbar Hidup!
