“Great workmanship , good prices”
Reviewed 22 May 2014

We specifically went to Mas to find a souvenir of Bali representing the culture of this island and we found what we were looking for ! I have a collection of masks from all over the world and I found one of interest in this village !
We first went to the main carving center when we saw some artists working on their pieces ( some unique , some common ) and then we were presented with some pieces which could generate some interest .We then went to three other galleries close by where I looked around and made some offers . I finally found one piece that really impressed me and bought it for 40 % of the initial demand ! It now stands in the middle of my collection !
I do recommend this village if you are interested in wood carving and it is worth doing some shopping around !

“The perfect place to buy quality wood carvings”
Reviewed 11 February 2014

We we're really impressed by this place. Yes the guide was persistent but they are there to make a living, so they want to sell. However he was also really informative and we got to understand how families learn from generations back and how each one has their own style. We also learnt about the different woods used, and why the prices differed greatly throughout the shop (experience of carver). We bought a beautiful piece which we paid $120 US for and for us it was good value given the time that had gone into carving it. We also got to watch the craftspeople at work...amazing! If you want to buy something of high quality to remind you of Bali, this is highly recommended.

“Great workmanship”
Reviewed 23 January 2014

My husband and I had a visit here on our day out, fantastic place, very clever people.. Excellent craftsmen , my husband used to work with wood so we know the skills needed to do this job!!
We wanted a mask to take home, n not seen many about worth buying.
Nothing cheap about this place at all, but we love collecting masks from our travels!!
Do barter as we got a canny deal!! Ended up buying 2!!!
Worth a visit if your interested in wooden carvings!! No cheap crap to be bought here !!

“Beautiful Workmanship, Definite Tourist Circuit”
Reviewed 8 January 2014 via mobile

We wanted some unique pieces that represented Balinese culture without spending a mint.

As result we put Mas Carving on the list for our driver on our tour day. Note i am almost positive these drivers get a cut, as is common at all the other businesses (coffee plantations, certain restaurants, silver shop, sports houses, etc.)

The shop we went to was large and had thousands of pieces that were all wonderful. They even even had 3 carvers at entrance for demonstration purposes when tourists arrive - the showmanship was evident as there was hardly any wood chips around them and when no was around they took smoke breaks.

With that said however it is still up to us, and i completely agree with earlier post that most of pieces are very unique so if you see one you like, chances are you will not find elsewhere.

Negotiating is a must from my perspective, yet i always feel i am no good as we started at $1.5M and settled at $1M for some puzzle boxes, Hindu statute, Buddha statute, and small flowery wall decoration. I am sure i could saved another $100k or so if i was better.

All in all many of the galleries hold unique works of beauty and suggest all should visit one at least once and at last haggle for one item, even if it is a small piece

“Beautiful carvings, too pricey”
Reviewed 22 October 2013

We visited this in October 2013. Very beautiful carvings - however the guide followed us around like a hawk, it was a little unnerving.

The prices were quite steep, many were up to $15,000 for a largish carving. We found the exact same wooden carvings for much cheaper elsewhere, so you should maybe shop around. The store isn't going anywhere soon, so you can always return to buy something.

Several of the items had the name of the carver and the date carved into them, some were unsold for nearly 8 years.
