A very nice kolonial restaurant ideal for a coffee, soup in a very nice atmosphere. Quality of food and service was excellent. Price is higher than average. But still ok considering the atmosphere and presentation of food. Service is proffesional. Man you certainly have to visit the toilet!

Australians would associate Batavia with infamous shipwreck of the Dutch ship of the Australian coast in 1629. More directly Batavia was the old Dutch name for what is now modern Jakarta.

Cafe Batavia is neither a shipwreck or old hat!

The building is traditional colonial and all furniture and fittings maintain the feeling. But, it all has a contemporary funky sort of style, I really liked it. Certainly no old boring time piece! The bathrooms are an intriguing mix of styles and photographs of celebrities.

Service is friendly and attentive, not at all stuffy or pretentious. On my last visit Cafe was full of indonesian architectural students: So it has a certain arty trendy charm with the locals.

Great range of food of all types. Yes a little dearer then some, but not much and well worth it for the experience. I ate only Indonesian and found it wonderful, reasonable portions, well presented and certainly delicious.

Catch the live music! A swinging retro 50's, 'Elvis' style country and western gig when I was last there. Very cool experience.

In Jakarta you must visit Cafe Batavia.

We had lunch there after visiting the puppet museum. We had a window table and a great view over the square. Some reviewers have said it is old decor. Yes it is, but that is part of the ambience. If you are expecting new world stuff then don't go there. The service was good and quick. The menu was fairly extensive and reasonably priced. The lime juice drink was seriously good according to my wife. The beer was nice and cold.

Upon entering the cafe, we were impressed by the colonial feel. It really makes you feel like a time warp but all you need to do is just see the downstairs area. The menu is decent but the prices are on the high side for the portions you get. Essentially you pay for the atmosphere.

The worst part and this is not excusable, is the service. We were a party of ten and all ordered main dishes. No appetizers. Believe it or, in a restaurant of this so-called level, there was over an hour interval between when the first person received their dish to the last person. While one person eats, some others had to wait an hour. Most restaurants especially one that claims "excellence awards" would prepare dishes in a fashion that everyone can be served at relatively the same time. In the end, we even had to cancel some orders.

We would be more forgiving if the restaurant was busy. It was not and the staff could not be bothered when we queried about the remaining dishes.

As such, go and see the place and dine elsewhere to get better value for money. If you do decide to go with a large group, be prepared to eat while others in your party may watch. Ridiculous!

In the chaos that is downtown Jakarta the Cafe Batavia is a step back to colonial times with the elegance and style enjoyed by the Dutch ! Good quality food mostly western with very polite and attentive service. The old photos and the whole ambiance are quite interesting. Good cappuchino!
