“A hostel for grown-ups!”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

... is what I initially thought. Let's face it: dormitories are generally the last place you want to stay. However, this place has its *stuff* together! They've really thought of everything. The dorm rooms with pods are excellent -- each pod has its own international electrical outlet, reading light, cubby space, curtain, and locker (they even provide a key). They provide towels; there's ALWAYS toilet paper in the bathrooms; there's a full kitchen on the top floor, as well as a really nice common space on the ground floor and a pretty cool roof which everyone drinks on all through the night. Coffee, tea, and water refills are free all day, and there's Wifi and a couple of computers for public use. The directions on the website are perfect, and it's super easy to get to. Breakfast is included; it's only white bread, various melon slices, and apple juice, but it's free! The owners, Ning and Ian, are really lovely and always willing to help. I think it's the warmest greeting I've ever received at a guest house. Also, you get an itemized printed receipt upon checking out! Really amazing. All that being said -- it's still a dormitory, so no matter how incredible it is, that doesn't stop people from having inappropriately loud sex in the dorm rooms at 3:00 am, or drunk people from puking in the bathroom sink, or the group on the rooftop belting out "Wonderwall" at insane hours in the morning (which, by the way, can be heard through the whole building). So, I mean, it's an excellent place to stay... but it's still a backpacker hostel.

It was my first time to stay in a hostel and I had a great time. The lobby is very cozy, the bathrooms equipt with hot/cold shower, and the beds...the capsule beds...totally loved it. But its not the amenities of the hostel that made it great. I think the best asset they have are the staff. They are very warm and helpful and are always willing to go the extra mile. I greatly appreciate how they let us leave our luggage while we tour the city and how they allowed us to use all the facilities (for free) even after we've checked-out. And with a warm hug of good luck as we walk out the door, what more can I ask for?

Room Tip: Capsule beds for privacy

Awesome hostels. Lots of facilities in this hostel. You should check out the rooftop, it's amazing. The owner of the hostel, Ning is very friendly and helpful. She does not treat us like her customers, but as a friend as well.

Room Tip: Choose the last pod, Bed 7-8. Much more privacy you have there!

Spent 5 days in Six Degrees while visiting friends in Jakarta. Hostel vibe is alive and well here. Common area is really nice and friendly, setup is good so you can talk to many people; top marks. Stayed in a 4 room dorm, bed was exceptionally good with the bunk bed frame built into the wall so you don't feel your neighbor climbing in. Can't comment on the location as I had a ride pick-up and drop-off each day. Would stay here again.

We stayed at Six Degrees at the start and end of our month travelling as our flights were to Jakarta. Despite spending most of our time in Jakarta at the hostel either planning at the start or recovering at the end, we had nothing but fun.

The 10 bed mixed dorm was fine, towels are provided and there are plenty of decent showers.

The breakfast was decent by hostel standard, served in the excellent communal area. Huge pool table, darts, cinema system with every film on hard drive you could imagine. The best thing about Six Degrees though was the rooftop terrace. In our first couple of nights at Six Degrees we spent many hours up there meeting new people over a Bintang, people who then became good friends with us who we met up with many more times in different places across our month.

Brilliant atmosphere and the staff all lovely, I would return in a heartbeat.

My sister and I from Singapore enjoyed our stay there. We wouldn't want to spend on luxury hotels at Jakarta. People at Six Degrees are so friendly. Check out the rooftop!!! We didn't want to leave Six Degrees and always rush ourselves back to 'home' once we are out exploring JKT. NO NEED TO CAFE HOP, save that moolahs and spend on local dishes just across the street!

The usual budget accomodation in Jakarta a few years back were Homestays and Losmens. Now, thanks to Six Degrees that jakarta is starting to explore the hostel market. They set the bars high for other upcoming hostels. And it's a good thing. The Hostel is situated along Jalan Cikini , one of the oldest streets in Jakarta.

Trivia: The first Texas Chicken and KFC in Indonesia are still operational to be found in Jalan Cikini.

The hostel's lounge is cozy with a billiard table and a bar. You can get drinks at the communal fridge as lon as you pay.

We stayed in a capsule-type room that can fit 4 pax just like those in japan capsule hotels only more roomy.

There is a rooftop gazebo ideal for just chilling or reading a nice book.

Room Tip: This hostel have a crazy-fast wifi in the entire indonesian archipelago. I tried measuring the speed...

It's good to hear from someone who has been to Jakarta in the past and knows what backpackers were faced with a few years ago. It's that negative budget travel experience people used to have that drove us to create Six Degrees. We wanted people to see the side of Jakarta that we had grown to love - it's not so bad after all, as long as you have a comfortable, friendly place to return to if the hustle and bustle of the city gets too much!

As for the Cikini trivia - wow! I didn't know our neighbours were a pioneering fried chicken outlet!
Cikini does indeed have a lot of history. Did you know TIM (the arts centre) used to be Jakarta Zoo?

Anyway, thanks so much again for leaving a review. Hope to see you again soon
