“An oasis of peace in Jakarta”
Reviewed 18 January 2009

Booked this hotel because of it being an InterContinental Hotel and knowing that the services would be accordingly. The hotel was actually completely restored and is now in tip top shape. In the levels below you will find a few shops, including a small supermarket. In the buildings close-by, there are a shopping centres and with a taxi (which are very cheap in Jakarta), you'll be able to use the hotel as your basis for all types of activities in and out of Jakarta.

The room was clean, gorgeous, and the services around the room impeccable. The room service has a lot to chose from, although many of the Asian dishes have been modified to fit the taste buds of the European and American travellers.

The Club Lounge was very nice and big, only pity was that when you pay for one guest (45 US$ extra!), you only get the facilities for one. Except for breakfast. Downstairs, the breakfast buffet is simply massive. There are plenty of fresh fruit and juices, several hot and cold dishes to chose from. Same applies for lunch.

A particularly nice area of the hotel was the lobby. Here you can have drinks in a nice atmosphere, hold business meetings or simply read a book. The girls serving the drinks are really fun to be around with. One in particular always made jokes and broke the ice of the cold atmosphere of the hotel very quickly.

The spa is ok, the massages very nice. A place to try out, but the city does have some very nice spas indeed, for all tastes... Then again, prices are not high, even at the hotel.

The location of the hotel is good, although traffic is a nuisance in the city. Now in Jakarta, being one of the last place you want to be, a the InterContinental Jakarta is a fantastic oasis to be in. A place where you can forget the city, work, play, relax, whatever.

During my first trip to Jakarta, this was my second hotel to stay in. By far the best hotel I visited in Jakarta.

The intecontinental Hotel in Jakarta is in central downtown Jakarta. Great central location. First off, security was top notch. the entry check point was located a good ways away from the entrance and there was sufficient staff manning each entry.

appearance - world class. My room was on the club level. beautiful room, with a great view of the pool and the city.

The club level includes breakfast, snacks, and evening happy hour. the staff was fantastic. Very nice and accomidating. One staff member walked me to the next building to show me where the ATM (Cash machine) was. Top Notch service.

the food - great selection. Great indonesian specialities. Western selection as well, but i did not try. There were several resturaunts to chose from and a 2 bars as well. The bar in the basement and the lobby bar both had good service and were devoid of "bar grils". This was a positive in book. These were great places to meet with family or customers. Clean, quiet, and great service.

I highly recomend the Intercontinental Jakarta. Great choice for anyone.

I had originally booked with the Park Lane, the hotel was filthy, so I switched the next morning to the Intercontinental. Terrific room and service. The gym was great and there is a very expert and eager personal trainer. I especially appreciated the spa, the prices were very reasonable and the treatment was great.

Great hotel. Deluxe room not extremely large but luxuriously furnished.

Bed is very comfortable with high quality linen.

Staff excellent. Everyone, and I mean everyone greeted me at all times. The housekeeper even addressed me by my name. Front desk staff friendly and efficient. In this regard their service is even better than the Grand Hyatt Jakarta.

Location is good. The new City Walk next door just opened. It has a dozen or so nice and reasonably priced cafe style restaurants serving both local and Western food.

Tried the buffet dinner at the hotel but unfortunately find it mediocre at best. The restaurant manager was very polite and nice though. Good thing there are many other restaurants in the City Walk.

Overall a great value. Will definitely return.

I found this to be one of those hotels that reels you in with an attractive-sounding room rate then charges excessively for everything – for instance, I was charged almost US$22 per day for internet access, which really is outrageous. Food and minibar were pricey too. They also quoted me prices in US dollars when I made my reservation but then, when I checked out, they billed me in Indonesian Rupiah at the “hotel rate” – what this means is that you are paying an extra 1-2% on top of the price you had agreed with them. If you query this they make silly excuses, eg, “we have to charge in rupiah”—if that’s true, they should be quoting prices in rupiah, not dollars. The room rate I was quoted, including tax and service, was $133 dollars but taking into account the currency ruse and the extravagant internet charge, I was charged more like $157.

Hotels get away with this routine gouging, and imagine that it’s perfectly acceptable behaviour, because too few of us complain (in my case I did, and at least persuaded them, after much arguing, to waive the hidden currency charge). It’s a shame that I came away from the hotel feeling that I’d been ripped off, because I would otherwise have had a fairly positive impression: the staff are polite and helpful; the hotel is well located and smart (though the carpet was stained in my room); they have metered “Silver Bird” taxis at the hotel door rather than the overpriced limos that some other hotels have; and there was a very good breakfast.

Definitely more a business hotel then for families. The service is evident from the staff that open the doors for you upon entry right till the time you check out. Efficient service, high quality rooms that are very neat and tidy, fine food but pricey on the bill, good business center with staff attending to your every need. If your into authentic indonesian food go for a stroll outside the hotel and hit the food stalls where you will eat like a king for 2-3$. You must have a strong stomach and not be prissy about where and what you eat! Then go back and chill in the hotel lobby with a scotch on the rocks!

Above average hotel (just) for a below average (just) price.

Restauarants and breakfasts fine, with plenty of choice.

However, I was unimpressed with the security, in theory airport style scanners on all doors, but I witnessed a few loopholes, such as on a few occasions I saw the security guys allow guests with large suitcases to bypass the scanner without checking the cases. This was enough for me to decide to abort my second week and check into the ShangriLa instead - a much nicer hotel
