Stayed here 2 nights, it wasn't bad to be honest, I read some of the "terrible" reviews and my experience was nowhere near as bad.
The main foyer/entrance was beautiful. The room was large and comfortable. Checking in took a long time but the staff were friendly. I was asked if I wanted an upgrade as I was paying by amex but they didn't indicate that it was complimentary as there was a deal as I would have opted for the upgrade for sure!
The rooms were clean, smoke free (my colleague's room smelled like someone had smoked in the room), large bathroom, shower was excellent, toiletries could have been of higher quality, for a 5* I expected nicer bed linen, similar to what you see on their website but I guess that is for the executive rooms, etc.
Breakfast and lunch was good. The selection of food was very good, no complaints. There is a huge seafood selection and many many fresh oysters if that is something you enjoy!
The surprise part of trip was.... My colleagues and I decided to go for a drink at CJ's pub. Thinking it was a "pub", it turned out to be a club with a 3.5 million rupiah buy-in to sit in the booths! As I waited for my colleagues to arrive, I opted to sit at the tables (non-booth) and as the minutes ticked away, I noticed that the "pub" slowly started to fill with high class working ladies on a Monday evening! My colleagues (all female) and I were dressed very casually for a few drinks in a pub to relax and unwind but this was totally unexpected! One of my colleagues was even accosted by the door staff, questioned if she was staying at the hotel, asked to prove by showing her room card and then another member of staff said "you're with the OTHER 2 girls", obvious not their usual clientele!
We quickly vacated once we were all in CJ's, not even staying for one drink and we went downstairs into the lounge where it was much more subdued with live singers and a better atmosphere that we were more accustomed to.
We all did not expect that kind of business to be happening in a 5* hotel but it would appear to be a normal occurrence for the Mulia (as indicated by the doormen).
