I really love this place. The view saw great. When i traveled to this place, i visited Merapi Museum and visited Batu Alien ( Alien's Rock). The museum showed the story of Merapi Mountain. Off road tour is the only one that you can pick. Don't forget to wear sunglass to protect your eyes from the sharpy dust. However it is the danger place to be visited.

My friend really wanted to do a walking trek around Merapi, the jeep trip and the car and driver option didn't involve enough walking for my adventure seeking friend so we joined a walk organised by Christian Awul of Vogels Hostel in Kaliurang. I'm very glad we did this, it was hard work but a highlight.

We arranged the trip the day before with Christian by phone - 274 895 208 (or refer Lonely Planet). Our morning started at 3.30am when we caught a taxi from Yogjakarta to Vogels Hostel, only 30 minutes away. At 4am we met 69 year old Christian, a Merapi veteran with 30 odd years experience at conducting these treks of Merapi. Christian briefed us on the walk.

We started our 6 hour return trip walk at 5am. The entire trip took 6 hours but this included a LOT of rest breaks and stopping to admire the sunrise, etc. You need good walking shoes or sneakers, long pants, long sleeves and a torch. It is not really cold, the long sleeves and pants are protection against the grasses and branches you walk through. It is a reasonably strenuous walk so totally unsuitable for children, the elderly or anyone who is too unfit. There is a lot of scrambling over rocks, under branches, and through long grass.

It was an adventurous and worthwhile experience. We didn't see ANY volcano activity this day (you have to be lucky to see something) but we had a fun and memorable time.

It is a mix of beauty and the sadness of the recent eruption. The red cross have donations at the village which was destroyed by the pyroclastic cloud. Jeep rides are the newest tourist attraction and a bit of fun whilst providing a new income source for the villagers in this area. Hot, dry and dusty so no nice clothes for this one!

I just coming back from Yogyakarta, and one thing that my children love in this trip is to ride with jeep around Merapi. We take a short trip with 1-1,5 hours and the price is around Rp.250,000-400,000.... I think It's reasonable. For short trip, you only stop in 4 places, but if you see something interest you can ask the driver to stop for just a second...if you around there, why don't you take a short trip too like me...

Standing as 'twin' volcanoes with Mt Merbabu. Located in central Java, it could be climb from the north, boyolali side or southern side, kaliurang side or Jogja side. I preferred climb from the north side, coz more easier and shortest way to 'puncak' / top. If you decide to climb from north, your first stop should be Boyolali bus station. And then you can rent a car ( i meant open roof car ;)) or old minibus to Selo. It cost about 100-150 K rp. But dont worry, you can share it with other climber. Next stop are New Selo, the base camp to climb. But dont forget to fullfiled your logistic at boyolali or cepogo or plalangan village. Its hard to get water or others at base camp. Standing 2965 mtrs above sea, need 4-6 hrs to climb. Better climb at early nite (7-9 pm) so you can catch beautiful sunrise. The route are joglo 1- joglo 2- pasar bubrah (consist of bigrock as big as a house! Take your breath n recharge your stamina here) n then climb hill of sands about 500 mtrs, the hardest route. Then you get the top. Magnificent view n unforgottable moments.
