Maharani Guest House

Have been staying in the guesthouse several times. It has two wings now - the old wing and the new wing. There are many guesthouses on the same street but by far I think Maharani is the best. Originally a big Javanese "pendopo" style house, guests are welcomed in a Pendopo style lobby with a tv room adjacent to it. Since this was a family house, rooms in the old wing are of various shape and size, all have shower inside. The new wing has modern minimalist style, like hotel rooms and slightly more expensive. Between the two wings there is swimming pool which is recently added to the facility. The guesthouse also has well-maintained nice garden and an open pendopo by the pool to relax or have your meals and tea. Overall this is a healthy and sunny property.

Room Tip: Room at the new wing is newer and nicer. If you prefer to experience a more local touch then the ol...

I stayed for 5 nights. I had booked over the phone based on reviews, however somehow missed a very critical fact in one of the reviews about the superior rooms...that they are NOT great. To me the pictures on the website were misleading. Its not just a size difference, but a quality difference too. When I checked in and was shown to my room, I was so very disappointed. The room had an unclean feel to it. Additionally, above the bathroom window, there was a permanent opening to vent the bathroom I suppose, as there was no fan. There was no netting in this space though. Additionally, there were some ants. I asked to change rooms, however this was no better. I told the person working that I would stay the night, since it was already dark, but that I would move to a new hotel the next day. He then showed me a deluxe room, which was much better and to my liking. After trying to bring the price down I finally decided to move to a deluxe room. I can't comment on the breakfast, because the price I negotiated did not include breakfast. I have included pictures of both the deluxe and superior rooms. The difference is night and day. The superior rooms are more reminiscent of a backpacker room with a private bathroom, hot water, tv and AC, where as the deluxe room is like a regular nice hotel with a refrigerator (and AC,tv & hot water of course). Even the quality of the mattress/sheets are different. Maharani does charge a 2% fee if you pay by credit card.

My room was not cleaned during my first 2 days there, so I asked them to clean it on the 3rd. It was not cleaned on the 3rd day, so I had to ask again and reminded them as I was leaving. It turns out that you have to leave the key at the front desk in order to have your room cleaned. I wished that they had told me this. You also only get 2 bottles of water upon check in and that's it. I attempted to watch tv one evening, however the 2 English language channels were fuzzy. To Kraton, I paid 25k rupiah in a taxi. To Malioboro I paid a becak driver 40k roundtrip and he waited for me while I watched a wayang kulit show, drove me a bit further up the road so that I could walked around, and stopped at an Alfamart to pick up a few drinks while heading back to the guesthouse. There are usually becaks waiting out in front of the guesthouse, or the hotel can call you a taxi. The guesthouse is close to some nice restaurants on Jl. Tirtodipuran and the batik factory district (walking distance). The internet within the rooms was ok. It cut out often each day and the signal wasn't always the strongest. I would recommend staying in a deluxe room on the 2nd floor if you decide to stay here. I didn't have anyone above me for the first 4 nights, however on the last night there were people. The following morning, I heard them moving around. Additionally on the last day, there was this “whomp-whomp” sound that was a bit annoying. It may have been a water pump.

I did sleep well each night. The bed was very comfortable. The AC worked very well too. I wasn't able to use the pool because I ran out of time, but it did look nice.

The staff was quite friendly and ready to go out of their way to help. For example, when I informed the staff that I would be leaving the next day due to the opening in the bathroom window of the superior room, they made a quick fix in the form a a cardboard box insertion, and said that they would put in a net the following day. Or when I asked if there were any spas nearby for a foot massage. They explained how to get to the spa, but after realizing it was somewhat confusing, offered to do the 10 minute walk with me. Or when I was drinking some lemonade that I had ordered to go from a restaurant

The property deserves a 4/5 for the deluxe room and a 2/5 for the superior room, hence the 3/5 rating.

This is my all time favourite hotel. The Delux rooms offer the best value and if you ask nicely they will give you a discount. Delux rooms are large, have AC, flat screens, reliable hot water and are spotless. The hotel is set in lovely gardens and the new pool is a great addition, especially after a big day out sightseeing. It is too small for groups and so has a more intimate feel than other hotels. This is the second time I have stayed there and I recommend it to all my friends (even the rich ones).

I booked the standard room. Unlike the other room, mine was not squared shape, but long and narrow. The guest house itself has other rooms, from pavilion to suite. Yes it is very cheap, only $20 per night for mine with swimming pool but no breakfast. It is near Prawirotaman, the hub of good restos in Yogyakarta, The bathroom was quite dirty, with no amenities and a bit of hair in the drain. The bed itself was small.

Room Tip: You could ask for a better room, the one that close to the swimming pool. It's way spacier.

Its a small guesthouse, near the palace-area of Yokja. They have mostly indonesian guests and therefore a quite "indonesian" breakfast but try to fullfill your wishes. Its calm and has a good value for money relation. As our taxi to the airport didn't come, they took us on the backseat of two motobikes to the airport, and we got our flight in time.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with private shower and toilet and ac.

When visiting Yogja, I stayed at the Maharani. Although the deluxe rooms are more expensive, they are worth every cent. Lovely large accomodation, great bed, comfortable, beautifully decorated, fresh towels every day. I had originally booked a basic room and was very disappointed. When I arrived I asked if there was anything better and was escorted to a new and beautiful part of the hotel, to large, modern and lovely rooms, very close to the pool and beautiful gardens. There is no comparison. I was lucky it was off season and they had other rooms to offer, and at a discounted price.

The staff will do everything in their power to assist you with anything you might need, and the location is a few minutes by taxi to the centre of the City.

The only complaint I have is the staff do not speak English and this was very difficult until one staff came in who has very good English, on the third day.

I would recommend the deluxe accomodation at Maharani, and would stay there again.

Room Tip: Go for Deluxe!
