If you don't know anything about Yogyakarta and Javanese, come here for general knowledge tour. They have artifacts, puppets and some cultural heritage they explain there. They perform Ramayana on leather puppet (wayang kulit) play every night except Sunday from 8-10 pm. It's kinda boring because we don't understand the language but for me it's interesting to see how the dalang (puppet player) holds and plays the puppets and how it looks from both the front and back of the white screen.

It is not glitzy and glam but it does hold glimpses into Javanese history and the history of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta which for those of us who love that sort of thing makes it well worth the visit. Kids will be ho hum though so maybe not for the young ones!

It was a treat to watch the shadow puppets from both sides of the stage. The Puppeteer manoeuvered the puppets from the front and he had the amazing talent of multi-tasking whilst playing with the puppets. He used his voice to narrate the story and sing at the same time, used his hands to control the puppets and used his leg to play an instrument whilst sitting down. The effect of the puppets from the other side was something different where one only gets to see the shadows of the puppets performing and no humans or musical intruments in the way. A must experience highlight.

Local guides are knowledgeable and so helpful. If I go back, I woudl start there. The place is compact but spaceous, strategically situated too.
