We stayed for 3 nights at The Phoenix Hotel in Yogyakarta in early November. It was a wonderful experience overall. From the ambience to the decor, rooms, dining, spa (had one of our best massages ever there!), boutique shop, service, etc it was TOPS and I would highly recommend a stay in this hotel. It really made our stay there enjoyable. Great location too close to Malioboro in the city centre.

Room Tip: We had a pool-facing room on the high floor (3rd is the highest I think :))

Very good hotel and location. Very good breakfast buffet (with local specialities).
The only points:
- restaurant area can be very crowded and noisy as you have to cross it to go to the rooms, especially when groups are arriving / leaving
- it could be indicated more clearly that there are different types of rooms in two different buildings and the one's on the website are (of course) the most expensive one's...

My first stay in this hotel. I am impressed with the service and attitude of the hotel staff. I like the Architecture of the hotel and the location is within walking distance to Malioboro.
The service is excellent and value for money. Need to improve the breakfast selection and the menu selection for lunch and dinner.

We stayed for two nights at the Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta. The hotel has a great style with very interesting decorative features, ornaments, old photographs, art and artefacts; one could spend some time just browsing these features, which are all in the hotel's colonial theme. The room was very comfortable with very good facilities and decor. The only downside of the room was the view which overlooked unattractive buildings and what looked like a cemetery; however I'm sure that many of the rooms have a good view e.g. those overlooking the pool. Breakfast at the hotel was good and there was a pleasing choice of items. The pool area is very attractive and pleasant and was a good place to relax. There is also a nice little courtyard with a fountain and that was pleasant to sit in during the evening. Another nice touch was that were pianists playing in the restaurant area at various times and the music was of a high standard. Service at the hotel was of a very good standard. A special mention must go to the band that played in the hotel's bar/nightclub; we popped in one evening for a drink and they played (very loudly, but well) for the whole time we were there even though there was only the two of us! In the context of Indonesia and in particular Yogyakarta, the cost of staying at the Phoenix is not cheap, however it is definitely worth it.

I am a 40 year old professor and my wife is a 30 year old lawyer. We are from Canada. We spent 3 nights at the Phoenix as part of our 3 week honeymoon in Indonesia. The Phoenix is a beautifully restored, charming colonial hotel in the heart of Yogyakarta. The hotel complex features wonderful food, an amazing breakfast buffet, top-notch friendly staff, clean US style hotel rooms and a great gym. I would recommend it more for business travellers than honeymooners. In general, Yogyakarta is a busy city and I don't have great things to say about it. If you need to visit here for some reason, this is a great place to stay. Otherwise, I don't recommend this city for vacationers. We went there because of the nearby temples which were spectacular. But I would have rather stayed in a remote area. We did have dinner one night at the Hyatt Regency Yogyakarta which was outside of town -- and that was truly peaceful and luxurious. I wish we had stayed there or not spent 3 days of our honeymoon in Yogyakarta at all. But like I said, if you need to be in Yogyakarta and closer to the center of town, Phoenix is a charming place to stay -- especially if you don't have to leave the hotel!!! By the way, one nice thing about our time in Yogyakarta was taking a horse carriage ride in the evening around the city in the downtown area. I understand it is a good place to shop.

We arrived after a long journey from the UK only to be told by a hotel manager that our reservation had been cancelled. Apparently, the hotel policy is to be paid in full by any agents at least two weeks prior to arrival. After undertaking some research, I found out that the agent had every intention of paying on our arrival. Therefore we were left chatting to a hotel manager about how to secure another hotel that evening. The hotel would have known that these two guests were from the UK and were due to arrive on that day and yet they bluntly cancelled our reservation without any consideration. Fortunately we managed to find an absolutely excellent hotel (Joglo Plawang) but agreed that we would return to the Phoenix for two nights to experience it. The manager who originally spoke to us (Miss Dewi?) was nowhere to be seen on our second arrival. We received an impersonal service - surprising after the sheer inconvenience during our first arrival. We were also given a sub-standard room with no view (of a wall) and had to wait almost two hours for our luggage to arrive despite repeated phone calls. The food was totally disappointing. The Hainan chicken rice I ordered through room service was not authentic. The meal at the restaurant was sub-optimal. The sweet and sour garoupa fish was like something from a take-away shop, and the sea bass did not taste fresh. Also, the gym facilities were poor. The treadmills were old and unsafe and kept stopping midway. The worst thing about this hotel was the fact that they cancelled our reservation and expected to us to find another hotel. Was the hotel totally full? I was not convinced. It was quite scary and disorientating after several long flights only to be told that the hotel we were expecting to stay at had closed its doors to us. We had originally planned to stay here for 6
nights but could only stay 2 and I was glad for this in the end. I was particularly disappointed that the manager who cancelled our reservation made no effort to find us on our second arrival about a week later. There was no apology, no one-off gestures and a poor ground floor room with no view. Let this be a warning to other travellers.

The Phoenix is outstanding in all respects. The deluxe room was spacious and comfortable and the staff without exception friendly and efficient.
The breakfast buffet was excellent and though I usually don't dine in hotel restaurants, chose to do so two out of the three nights of our stay.
On the final morning we took the Cooking Class which the hotel runs - a delicious hands on experience.
Worth a trip to Yogya just to stay at Phoenix!
