This hotel is like a quiet oasis in a very crowded and busy city. The rooms are very nice, and acceptable size given the location in middle of a big city. I had a room with pool view, which means a balcony that is quiet and nice place to relax. The cafe and restaurant in the hotel are also recommended, I was very satisfied with quality.

Very beautiful hotel located near Jalan Malioboro (for shopping) and near the Kraton (Sultan's Place). This was my second stay at this hotel and it was just as good as the first. We were in an Executive King room so there was plenty of space. Staff are friendly and the breakfast had a good selection of local and international food. Very easy to get to all relevant locations in Yogya.

Room Tip: Have only stayed in the Executive King rooms which a very large.

We were really disappointed in our stay.

The good points first - The main areas of this hotel are quite lovely, especially the outdoor eating area. The breakfast is very nice with quite an extensive selection of food. We also ate one dinner there, which was very delicious and we enjoyed it. So the restaurant was the highlight.

The negative:
When we checked in our non smoking room - it was very smoky so we had to change to another room. The second room was above the bar, but two floors up so we did not think this would be an issue – but it was. There was screaming and cheering from 11 pm to 5 am for a soccer match. I understand this is a once a year event – but it happened while I was there and it did impact my stay. The porch looks out onto a roof so if did not have any appeal – and I usually love to have coffee out on the porch. I did not even bother.

We had a superior Heritage - Queen room, which was small and as others have commented quite worn. The towels were in terrible shape for a hotel of this quality.

The bar was too smoky for us. We asked if we could have the “happy hour” special in another room due to the smoke and the manager denied it. This was unfortunate.

The rooms above the pool looked very nice but I did not see the inside – if you want to stay at this hotel I strongly recommend upgrading your room – you might then have a 5 experience.

Room Tip: anything that is NOT above the bar!

Dear Paris 28

Thank you for staying with us recently and we feel sorry that you have not been satisfied with your experience with us.

We are really concern about your feedback and we have already addressed your concerns to the departments in charge. They will give their best in order to provide better services in the future.

We are particularly sorry about the circumstances of your stay and we deeply regret that the World Cup Final broadcast disturbed your sleep. It was a unique occasion and our hotel does host such events on regular occasions.

Hopefully you will consider staying with us again in the near future and get a better impression of our hotel.

Stayed here for 2 nights in July 2014.
The room was spacious and well decorated with everything we needed. The hotel itself was beautiful 1920s era which I loved. My son really enjoyed a swim in the pool and it served as a great base for us to explore Borobudur.

The premises are beautiful. The rooms are spatious and nicely decorated, opening on a balcony overviewing the simming pool. The staff was attentive and helpful. The wifi did work well everywhere in the hotel. The breakfast buffet was quite plentiful and diverse, but unfortunately some fruits were rotten and some dishes didn't seem really fresh anymore around 9:30am. One thing not to miss at the bar/restaurant: try the "kopi tubruk", with a set of various types of sugars, which is totally a killer!

Room Tip: Offer yourself a treat and book a room with balcony overlooking the swimming pool

Maybe I had high expectation of this hotel but I really felt let down by my stay here last June. The only saving grace was the dinner buffet is excellent and the public areas especially the open veranda are unique and cozy.
There seems be a disconnection the front desk and the porter system and the front desk don't seems to read instruction from guest.
If you are going to have the guest wait for their rooms, make sure their is luggage is coordinated and the room is at least clean.
Well, the room. The bathroom had some hair on the wash stand. It had becoming a running joke for the whole stay between my sister and I. I had look at the pictures of the room of the other reviewers and they don't look like the one we stayed. It just not inviting and cozy. There is a balcony but it looks over the roof.
This was our last stay in Indonesia and I was disappointed with the experience. The hotel is not bad but look for alternative to stay in Yogyakarta or at least check the room first.

Room Tip: check the room first because there are variables in terms where it is located

We stayed here for four nights last month.
There were good and bad points to this hotel.

The bad: The room was on the small side and the bathroom wasn't great, the shower was bad, kept changing from hot to cold.
The breakfast fruit was always covered with flies in the morning and would have been better covered.

The good: the hotel was nice as a building, it was easy to walk into town.
The rest of breakfast was good - there was great variety.

We did use the spa facilities and they were very good and really reasonably priced.

Dear AnanB

Thank you very much for your balanced comments of the Phoenix Hotel.

I have taken note of both the positives and the "not so positive “comments. I apologize if we were not able to meet your expectations especially some problem that you met during your stay with us in our rooms and fly in our restaurant during your breakfast time. We are taking very seriously your comments and addressed them. We will learn from these shortfalls and put efforts to step up to the best standards.

We do hope that you will allow us a second chance to be your hosts in the near future.
