Reviewed 25 June 2014

If you're in Yogjakarta and looking for a good silvercraft, you should go here. Only 30 minutes top from the Yogjakarta city. Also you still can bargain the price.

“Historical neighborhood”
Reviewed 21 June 2014

Though today it serves as the city's Silvermith's quarter, the neighborhood's deep history as the capital of Mataram Kingdom before they were split roots deeply into this part of the city. Medieval alleyways and old buildings are common, from here we can feel what the city was planned like in the 16th century before it declined. There are various pretty looking old mosque in this part of the city too and Alun alun neighborhood that used to serve as the city's main square, but now is filled with dwelling and traditional market.

Do enter one of the many Joglo Kalang houses called UGM Omah, there to get more feeling of history of Javanese Mataram and how merchants build their house under Dutch rule.

There is tomb of the old Mataram king in the city, which somehow resembles Balinese gates and walls design. It symbolized the historical link of the Javanese and Balinese, as well the Javanese's tendency to still retain their old Hindu-Buddhist influence alongside their practice of Islam.

“City of silver and resting place of the first Mataram Sultan”
Reviewed 8 June 2014

Kota Gede is famous for its silversmiths and silver works. There are shops where you can see how raw silver is made into jewelry pieces and art works. If you like filigree designs, this is the place to go. There is a lot of brooches, pendants, rings and earring designs to choose from. Prices are a little steep but depends on how much you want to spend on. You can try to bargain a bit. Another attraction is the resting place of the first Mataram Sultan. It is located near the. Kota Gede market in an old section of a mosque. You need the proper attire to enter the tomb our 'makam'. Kota Gede is a place to go if you have time or if you like silver.

“Informative”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

Visited HS Silverworks - managed to observe the process of preparing silver jewellery and crafts - amazingly talented craftsmen with dainty precise work, happy to explain what they were doing.

There was also a shop where you could purchase the silver goods
