I’m a fan of quirky hotels offering something unique in style and locality. The Argonauta fits the bill nicely on both counts.
Expect Mediterranean-style apartments as the name ‘Argonauta’ suggests, set into a lush, jungly hillside facing the ocean. The road to the hotel is off the main road. You turn down the hill and pass through the local village. Expect warm hospitality from the owners and staff who will help you plan your daily itineraries and assist you getting there and back with the minimum of hassle.
Don’t expect resort-style amenities or service at the Argonauta. And don’t expect elegant fine dining restaurants or Manhattan-style bars either. You might prefer to try the Shangri-La or any of the bigger five-star resorts nearby for that sort of thing. The Argonauta is a mid-range hotel offering personalised hospitality.
You won’t have easy walking access to the main beach and the activities typically associated with Boracay (banana boat rides, kiteboarding etc.) although the hotel is more than happy to arrange those activities for you and drop you off at the main beach. From the hotel to the centre of the main beach area took about 10-15 minutes on average and trishaws were about PHP 150 to return one-way
Be prepared to climb steep stairs at the Argonauta and quite a lot of them. Note that there is also some construction going on on the beachfront below (see my photos from July 2014). I expect it will take a few years before the view has “naturalised” again with the new resort being built below.
I would recommend the Argonauta for couples or families with older kids looking for a mid-range, peaceful stay away from the madness of the main beach. Minimum stay of 2-3 nights. Ideal way to enjoy the hotel: go to the seafood market in town, buy your fish, cook it in the apartment and eat in on a roof terrace with a bottle of wine.
I would not recommend the Argonauta for people with limited mobility or people who require wheelchair access.
Contact the hotel in advance of arrival. They can arrange transfer from nearby airports to the hotel, including the ferry and taxi from the ferry terminal. You will be put on a shuttle bus from the ferry terminals to the hotel. If you want something more comfortable than that, you could contact a travel agent for a private car and driver.
