“Stay here for the hospitality and get-away-from-the-tourist-madness views of the ocean”
Reviewed 22 July 2014

I’m a fan of quirky hotels offering something unique in style and locality. The Argonauta fits the bill nicely on both counts.

Expect Mediterranean-style apartments as the name ‘Argonauta’ suggests, set into a lush, jungly hillside facing the ocean. The road to the hotel is off the main road. You turn down the hill and pass through the local village. Expect warm hospitality from the owners and staff who will help you plan your daily itineraries and assist you getting there and back with the minimum of hassle.

Don’t expect resort-style amenities or service at the Argonauta. And don’t expect elegant fine dining restaurants or Manhattan-style bars either. You might prefer to try the Shangri-La or any of the bigger five-star resorts nearby for that sort of thing. The Argonauta is a mid-range hotel offering personalised hospitality.

You won’t have easy walking access to the main beach and the activities typically associated with Boracay (banana boat rides, kiteboarding etc.) although the hotel is more than happy to arrange those activities for you and drop you off at the main beach. From the hotel to the centre of the main beach area took about 10-15 minutes on average and trishaws were about PHP 150 to return one-way

Be prepared to climb steep stairs at the Argonauta and quite a lot of them. Note that there is also some construction going on on the beachfront below (see my photos from July 2014). I expect it will take a few years before the view has “naturalised” again with the new resort being built below.

I would recommend the Argonauta for couples or families with older kids looking for a mid-range, peaceful stay away from the madness of the main beach. Minimum stay of 2-3 nights. Ideal way to enjoy the hotel: go to the seafood market in town, buy your fish, cook it in the apartment and eat in on a roof terrace with a bottle of wine.

I would not recommend the Argonauta for people with limited mobility or people who require wheelchair access.

Contact the hotel in advance of arrival. They can arrange transfer from nearby airports to the hotel, including the ferry and taxi from the ferry terminal. You will be put on a shuttle bus from the ferry terminals to the hotel. If you want something more comfortable than that, you could contact a travel agent for a private car and driver.

Room Tip: The cheaper rooms are higher up the hill in the main building but the sea views are mostly obscured...

Argonauta is situated away from the busy central white sand beach area of the boracay island and in the secluded part of the island. A very nice location with a beautiful view of turquoise blue waters of boracay. The best part about Argonauta is its staff, very friendly and sweet. Jun, the manager is awesome and makes sure your stay is wonderful. It was my honey moon and he made sure it was special.

Rooms are spacious and has a good view of the beach. overall a great experience.

Since I left Boracay about 5 months, but all the memories about it make our family feel unforgettable. The White Beach is so wonderful, the special goods, the ebullient local people, the beautiful sea and fabulous sunset made us felt so exciting. The Argonauta family gave us the warm feeling at this fairyland. When we arrived here, Jun greeted us, arranged considerate services for us, we felt just like back to home immediately. The room is clean; we could see the beautiful sea from window. That was a cozy feeling I had ever experienced. Every morning we woke up with the sounds of wave, the fresh air, the gorgeous sunshine, that was very nice. Every day, the breakfast would give us surprise, it was fresh, delicious. Argonauta family gave us the sweet smile and kindly salutation. We spent the Chinese New Year’s Eve at here, Jun prepared a specious present for my younger sister and me, they climbed the coconut tree, and picked up two coconuts for us, when we finished super backed to villa, two young males took coconuts and waited for us, that carved our name on the two coconuts, that was unique and unforgettable for us, we shared theses special coconuts at the New Year’s Eve, all of my family members said, that were the most sweet and fresh coconut we had ever drank. Until now, every time I remembered these things about the Argonauta family for us, I also feel feelingly. I want to say thanks to the Argonauta family, all of you gave us the most wonderful memory at Boracay, this travel not only made us appreciated a beautiful scenery, but also let me make so many kind friends, best wishes for the Argonauta, I am looking forward we could meeting at next time.

If you want to be amongst all the action in White Beach this is probably not the right hotel for you.
We chose Argonauta because we didn't want to be somewhere crowded and possibly noisy (centre of White Beach is both these things) We also didn't want the big resort experience.
We booked a one bed apartment which we were glad of as we had lots of space, a fantastic view and access to a wonderful roof terrace.
The hotel provides a shuttle service into town and most other places and beaches on the Island on demand rather than to a timetable which meant you could be very flexible in planning your day.
It was never a problem getting a tuk tuk back to the hotel.
The young staff team at the hotel are professional, well trained and very eager to please. Always smiling.
Breakfasts were great, we always had ours on the terrace which has amazing views especially at sunset. The evening before we left we asked that staff cook us a fish dinner and it was a truly memorable experience. We started with giant prawns, done on the grill as was the whole fish dish which followed. Presentation was wonderful, food amazing and the service just lovely with the staff all ensuring everything was as it should be. All at an amazingly reasonable cost.
One of the big advantages to staying here is that the owners are on site and have a wealth of local experience between them which they happily share with guests. Therefore you get to know the best beaches, restaurants, spa's, in fact anything you need to know. We enjoyed it very much and hope to visit again sometime. The only other proviso I have is if you have any mobility issues there are a number steep steps to negotiate, the pay off being the wonderful views

Room Tip: If you can, go for an apartment. Very spacious and equipped with all utensils if you wish to self ca...

We arrived on 2nd May. Jun greeted us at the door by name which was a pleasant surprise, it was very different from the usual hotels we were used to.
The place is off the road so there is no noisy partying, no street commissioners trying to sell you sunglasses or boat trips. They have a few roof terraces so there is great all round views of the sunset. The rooms were big, clean and felt like home.
Jun and his team were great! From the food recommendations eg: crispy pata, where to visit, which drinks to try. His personal touch, coming to greet each and every guest by name during breakfast or anytime he happens to catch you, simply lets you feel your every need is taken care of.
Jun and team also go the extra mile to help with where to visit and Jun, a big big thank you to your guest relation officer who accompanied us through the island hop, snorkelling, helmet dive and finally to D'tilapapa mall for some fresh seafood shopping. she was a great help as we could speak the local language.

Overall it was a wonderful experience and when we come back next year, you know where I'm staying. Cheers to Jun and team.
Nicholas and Chloe.

Room Tip: Room 5! nearest to a great view.

From the moment you arrive you are greeted like a friend, the staff here really make an effort to make your stay great, especially Jun...he's a legend! It's an intimate and personable hotel.

As a younger couple we felt we were a little “out of the action” and it was too quiet for us. Also being so far out, if you're tired in the evenings for dinner there is no other option but to eat at the hotel. And the food at the hotel is what really lets it down...we got  traveller’s diarrhoea and vomiting from it...nightmare! It was definitely from food eaten here because we ate at the hotel on the night of arrival and next morning for breakfast. Both my partner and I were very sick afterwards which ruined the next 4-6 days. We were so disappointed because we were super careful where we ate on our trip. To their credit, the staff did look after us which we appreciated.

If you can, don't stay in the Garden room. The bathroom is on top of the kitchen and the BBQ smoke billows into the room. The bed creaks so loudly every time you move and the aircon is really old and loudly hums all night like an engine of a small plane. There's also no controls for it so you have to get up every time you want to change temperature (which is either freezing or just air). Since I was so sick I couldn't leave the room for a few days it became my arch-nemesis!

I hate giving less than great reviews to hotels, and maybe I'm biased because we got quite sick here, but i wouldn't recommend Argonauta to my friends. We later moved to Discovery Shores and were much happier with that experience, comfort level, location and the food :-)

Room Tip: Stay in a villa not in a room. Villa 7 seemed nice.

This place is simply amazing. Felt home from the first minute. The staff is just putting so much effort into the treat of the guest. Appartments are clean, nice view, nice home cooked food. The staff from cleaner to manager are just super friendly. I was surprised about the ability to read the guests mind....Well done.
