“A Blast of Serene Amidst the Busy City”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 January 2013

Set in the city but not of the city, Hotel Fort Canning was restored and reconstructed on 2010 to become one of Singapore's most talked about boutique hotel. It has preserved its colonial glamour while injecting it with a modern and elegant touch.

Papa & Mama stayed in the Deluxe Room for this trip and it was amazingly spacious. The cleanliness of the room passed my scrutinizing eyes and the space planning of the room; the positioning of its furnitures are brilliant as well. Of course, the room came with basic amenities and a few luxurious additions like a Nespresso machine, an Internet TV etc

Service of this hotel is impeccable and it makes guests feels important, valued & respected. Papa & Mama fully enjoyed our stay in this hotel :)

A lovely hotel in the middle of a historical park in the central district of Singapore. Our group of 5 took three Executive rooms all facing the park.
The walk in the Fort Canning park in the morning was excellent. The location is surprisingly central as it only took a 10 minute walk across a skypath to Clarke Quay for a cruise to Marina Bay Sands. The tour of the British bunker during the fall of Singapore located just across from the hotel was very interesting. We only noticed the bunker because people kept coming out of this descript looking metal service door on the hill side directly across from our window.
The walk to the MRT station was a bit more challenging as we had to cross a few streets and a shopping centre car park. The Singapura shopping center on other side of the MRT station was recently enlarged and we enjoyed it because it was more like a suburban shopping centre rather than the ones on Orchard Road although we cannot recommend the relatively expensive buffet restaurant (by Chef Wan?) in the shopping centre as it was probably the worst Malay food we had on the trip. The Japanese section of the restaurant was much better for some reason.
The rooms were excellent in that ceilings were high and the electrical systems were high tech. Two of the rooms had bathrooms to the side and one was an open plan. We liked the open plan but others in our group was not so sure. Basically the TV was in the middle of the room with the bed and the bathroom to either side.
We loved the walk up and down the wide stairway in the middle of the hotel and the free coffee and fruit juices in the lobby.
The staff were friendly but seemed a bit stressed. I did not think the hotel was occupied to near capacity maybe that was the reason.
The breakfast was nice in a lovely setting.
Not much to fault at all. Only thing maybe that taxis charge a call out fee if you pick up a taxi from the hotel.

Room Tip: There are two types of executive rooms. Ask for the non-open plan one if you like to take bath and d...

I have known about the Fort Canning Park since I was a kid, and was excited there was a new hotel there to stay when I was back home visiting my parents in Singapore. Unfortunately, due largely to the hotel's incredibly rude and arrogant staff, this was a horrible experience.
I've stayed in luxury hotels all over the world, and am happy to say that I've never experienced anything like this before -- the staff treats you like you don't deserve to stay here or maybe because they only entertain Caucasian guests. I requested for additional bottled water as mine wasn’t replenished. It never came so I had to ask for it three more times until someone handed over to me two bottles very rudely and gave me a dirty look. My guest and I were hungry so we ordered from Room Service. Firstly no one answered my calls after five different times. My guess was they were busy which I understood as it was the festive season. Finally when someone answered my call and said it will take 30-40 minutes for my food as they were very busy. What excuse is that? How is that my fault? The hotel should have prepared themselves for a busy holiday season. How can a hotel try and reduce costs at the expense of causing frustrations to their guests? How is that justifiable? Is that fair? I don't think so!

My view is you should by all means visit this hotel to see the beautiful restored building and its surroundings. A great building, however, doesn't make a great hotel.

HOTEL FORT CANNING: SUPERB!

My husband and I have just returned from our 25th visit to Singapore since 1987, so we’ve stayed at many hotels and noticed many changes. These days, Singapore has a tough challenge in trying to please their guests, because tourists are spoiled for choice. All the 5-star hotels offer terrific service, and now there is a burgeoning uber-luxe industry of 6-star competitors edging in on their territory, offering even grander jaw-dropping, eye-popping, over-the-top come-ons.

Which brings me to the 16 nights we spent at the Hotel Fort Canning. We’d read some very negative comments on Tripadvisor about the hotel and after spending our first few days in absolute paradise, we wondered if those people were staying at the same place.

We arrived very early in the morning. Check-in was efficient and welcoming; no sooner had we reached our room, there was a knock at the door (4.30am) and we were presented with a tray of croissants and pastries. The room itself is a wonder to behold: Fort Canning has a rich heritage. Formerly the British Far East Command headquarters during WW11, this magnificent colonial edifice dates back to 1926, and is situated deep within the tropical lushness of Fort Canning Park. Indeed, a verdant oasis in the middle of this amazing city state. Officially opened in 2012, the remodelling of the building has artfully blended the old and the new: now in its’ current status as an inviting 86-room boutique hotel. A seamless transition between preserving the historic with wonderful cutting-edge effects. Marble bathrooms with 15ft high ceilings, deep stand-alone tubs, and monsoon rainshowers. All the switches in the bedroom suite are touch-sensitive and glow in the dark; a Nespresso machine stands sentinel for caffeine-fixes, complimentary Wi-Fi on tap, and a customised pillow menu.

Drinks, anyone? Each evening at twilight, wine and canapés are served in the guest lounge, courtesy of the establishment. Oh, and a giant Nespresso Tower dispenses all-day coffee for the enjoyment of hotel guests. With biscuits! Whatever we requested was delivered with courteous and friendly charm; nothing was forgotten in making our long stay simply fantastic.

Did I mention an inordinately long lap-pool, a designated childrens’ pool, and a superbly-appointed gym? There are also plenty of hideaway nooks, which are provided for private conversation while overlooking the glorious foliage.

Singaporeans love to eat. In fact, one is never more than an arms-length away from a restaurant, patisserie, hawker’s stand, or coffee-shop. So the cuisine choice is culturally eclectic, ranging from Armenian to Zoroastrian. But after our first meal in the hotel’s intimate restaurant, The Glasshouse, we chose to dine there as often as possible. The array of both Western and Asian dishes were beautifully presented by very attentive staff, at more than reasonable prices. Why look any further?

To sum up, I would like to congratulate our hosts, Mr Pereira, Ms Cheong and Mr Raja for the wonderful environment they have created, as well as their terrific personalised service.

Hotel Fort Canning is inviting and luxurious. We cannot recommend it highly enough, and can’t wait to experience its’ charms all over again!

Sometimes websites and reviews can be deceiving - in the case of Hotel Fort Canning – we were let down. We only had two nights, thank goodness. Our room on the first floor was small and not very clean. Wash basin area was badly stained and was right beside the bed (not normal) we were taken aback by having the bathtub in the middle of the room (not normal) and a very tiny shower/toilet area.Other reviewers mentioned the shower/toilet were huge but (definitely not ours!) We wish they mentioned all these upon our check in. We found the staff aloof and not extremely friendly or forthcoming for the quality of the hotel we expected it to be and for the price we paid. On one occasion i asked the distance to travel by taxi to a destination, and was told 10 minutes – when it was about 25 minutes - so I was embarrassingly late for an important appointment. The location at a park and centralized which was excellent. The lobby entrance and breakfast restaurant deco was very old-fashioned - but the style in the reception was fine. Breakfast could have been better.

One really good thing – the lunch and dinner which we had in both the restaurants were excellent. But overall experience was poor.

Room Tip: Make sure to ask for rooms on 2 or 3 floor. The staff said they are bigger upon our check out

Here's the good point. The location is near Orchard Rd.
Here's the bad points. Check in takes 3 hours. Low efficiency throughout the hotel.
Not enough manpower. Overall experience: Not coming back again

Room Tip: Nearer to pool if you dont like walkingso much to get to the pool.

Dear Jen T

Thank you for your review. We are very concerned that you did not have a wonderful stay at Hotel Fort Canning, something that many of our guests have enjoyed. Our official hotel check out time is 12pm and check-in time is 2pm. When we are running full, it is near impossible for us to check guests in earlier than 2pm as we will need to clean the rooms after the previous guests check out. If a guest arrives earlier than the 2pm check-in time, he may have to wait a while for his room to be ready. Hence, for example, if a guest arrives at 11.30am, and is checked in at 2.30pm, while it is true he has waited for 3 hours in real time, the check in waiting time would be half an hour.

As we have never encountered a guest having to wait 3 hours after the official 2pm check in time to get a room, we are concerned about your experience. We have written to you personally to seek details of your feedback so that we can investigate further and take the necessary action. We hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely

Recently had a staycation with my girlfriend at this hotel. Nothing similar to any boutique hotels i've stayed at for my previous staycations. Simply unique . The exterior was retained from the original building they say, yet the modern feel of the interior including the rooms are simply awesome. It was a genius idea to retain the "Grand staircase". Love the bath tub. Bed is comfy too. Restaurant is nice but i believe they could do better on the variety for breakfast. Complimentary evening drinks at the private lounge has got to be a favorite part of my stay as well.

Service wise? It was a rather busy timing when i was checking in but despite the busy period and just 2 work stations, i could see the Front-of the-house team doing their best to attend to each and every guest in a timely manner. And they never forget to smile and greet every guest. Especially 2 of the staff, one was a very cheerful lady in grey and the other gentlemen in a black suit (dressed differently from the others:they should be some management staff or something), they were checking in guests at the lounge instead of the front desk! What a way to lessen the waiting time. i was simply impressed by that. Check out was brief as i've already prepaid for the room but i believe i can sense the staff being genuine when saying "Hope to see you soon" this time it was a petite lady, philipino i guess..

I've read the negative feedbacks about this hotel but i guess it's just subjective to each experience. Well mine was great i guess. Definitely recommended.

Room Tip: I stayed in a Deluxe... Great enough for me. The higher categories should be better i guess. Just a...
