“The charm of old Singapore with jungle birds songs next to MRT station”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 April 2014

Nice rooms facing greenery, spectacular bathrooms with views (ask for the City side where the door between bathroom and room is not automatic)Very friendly staff and excellent Chef Choice.
Lovely walk around the hotel along magnificent trees.
5 minutes walk (when you figure out the shortcut) to the biggest MRT station on Orchard Road, coming back is a little harder since it is uphill.

***Actually stayed here in Nov 2012, I know I know, been slack with reviews and only decided I would start doing so recently***

Room: Very cool, hi-tech, interesting boutique style rooms. Comfy and actually loved the bathroom.
Staff: Helpful and professional
Location: Because of where it is set, it can be a bit of a walk to get to the MTR. Taxis are definitely needed.
Overall, found this place to be above average but not sure I would return because I have stayed in other places that are more convenient location wise.

Dear Rodney F,

Thank you for staying with us and for your nice review - better late than never!

We are very glad to read that you found the rooms interesting, comfy and very cool, and that you loved the bathroom! We are also very happy that you found our staff to be helpful and professional, and we have shared your kind words with them to motivate them further.

Our heritage park location offers an oasis in the city, a 5-minute walk to the Dhoby Ghaut MRT interchange station, and a 10-minute walk to Clarke Quay, Singapore's premier entertainment district, so while we are not smack in the hustle and bustle of Orchard Road, we are, never-the-less, just a hop, skip and jump away!

We certainly hope to see you at Hotel Fort Canning again soon!

Best wishes,

Amy

Singapore was our first stop on our 3 week honeymoon. On arrival at the hotel we were shown to our room and reception staff were very friendly and efficient. We didn't have breakfast included in our stay which ended up being a good thing as we slept till about 11am every morning thanks to the jet-lag!
The hotel is in the best location for walking around Singapore or using the trains or buses. We were able to walk to and from the local train station within 5 - 7 minutes as well as the bus station from which many buses depart to various areas. We were also able to walk to Orchard Road very quickly and easily.
Also within walking distance to Clarke Quay which was great for dinners and drinks in the evenings.
Hotel was elegantly decorated and all staff were friendly and efficient. We particularly loved the HUGE Nespresso machine in the lounge area downstairs!
We attended the complimentary drinks and snacks evening on 1 occasion; a little disappointing with the snacks as there was only 1 tiered tray of snacks and once those were finished there weren't replaced.

It was very hard for me to decide on the exact rating to give this hotel. On the one hand, it is probably better than 'average.' On the other, giving it a higher ranking would imply a recommendation to future travellers when I have reservations about that. So, on to the good and the less impressive:

The good:
- the rooms are lovely. We had a premium luxe room which was thoughtfully set out and was enough space for us and our son. The amenities in the room were great and the bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in
- the park surroundings gave the hotel a tranquil vibe away from the hustle and bustle
- the room service. On our first night, we had dinner in our room as we arrived very late. For room service food it was exceptional. We went for the local rice dishes and they were generous, tasty and authentic. Later, we had the American breakfast which, again, was a large serve with everything cooked well
- cocktail hour from 6pm to 8pm where the hotel puts on free wine and beer of decent quality. Given the prices of alcohol in Singapore this is not to be sniffed at! But, here we also encounter the less impressive aspects of the hotel ...

Needs improvement:
- the hotel advertises their happy hour in their website. They advise you of it upon check-in. So why then give over the entire bar area to a private closed function? Especially when there are other spaces in the hotel especially designed for functions? So, one night we popped down for drinks before heading out only to be advised we could not access the bar but instead could have drinks outside on the verandah. The verandah being outside in the stifling heat AND the designated smoking area. The barman made this suggestion to me when I was standing there with my five-year-old. Um, thanks. Eventually this mess was sorted out as other patrons were equally cranky and we ended up with drinks in the concierge area but a little forethought could have avoided that annoyance
- so, yes, they fix things promptly when they go wrong but it felt like things went awry a little too often. For example, two days in a row no towels by the pool. Once we rang the front desk this was remedied but they should have someone checking on these things rather than leaving it to guests.
- location; there is much to be said for the parkland setting but I don't think it would win me over in future. The hotel is simply too far from Orchard Road. If we were in Sydney, we'd walk the distance. But in the humidity, it's too far a walk to be comfortable. So you have to catch taxis everywhere. Fine, Singapore taxis are clean and not too expensive. But do you think there's ever one waiting for a fare outside the hotel? Nope! Every time we called a cab there was a significant wait ... Probably because half the taxi drivers in Singapore do not know where the hotel is. Three taxi drivers taking us back to Fort Canning from other places had no idea where the hotel was. The latter, ok, is not the fault of the hotel but the hotel could work to improve guest access to cabs.
- the lighting system in the rooms. It's very modern and swish but it is totally counter-intuitive. Press the light button closest to the bathroom and you light up the whole room (great for nocturnal toilet visits). Rather than having a funky design on the keypad it would be helpful to either have the keypad correspond spatially to various lights in the room or to have little icons that indicate this light is for the bathroom etc

Overall, average is probably a harsh rating but there was certainly a lot that I liked about this hotel. But guests considering Fort Canning really need to consider the distance aspect which is amplified in the heat and by a paucity of taxis.

Dear VenturerSydney,

Thank you for staying with us and for highlighting all the things that guests love about Hotel Fort Canning, like the lovely spacious rooms, the great amenities, comfortable beds, heritage park setting, exceptional room service and evening aperitif hour.

Our evening aperitif hour is held at the Hotel’s Private Lounge and is exclusively for hotel guests. The Tisettanta Lounge is open to both hotel guests and members of the public. We are sorry that on that evening, we were full in both places and you had trouble finding seats for yourself and your son. We are also sorry about the pool towels; we do check on them hourly, but we will step up the checks.

As we are located in a heritage city park, our guests treasure the fresh air, peace and quiet, so we do not have taxis waiting at our driveway for fares to maintain the fresh air, peace and quiet. With the new taxi booking system, we have no problem calling for taxis when guests require their service. We are sorry that the wait had inconvenienced you.

Every room has an instruction sheet showing which button on the lighting panel is for which light, but we thank you for your feedback and suggestion of placing little icons that indicate which button corresponds to which light.

We are glad that there was a lot that you liked about Hotel Fort Canning, and we hope to be of service to you soon.

Best wishes

Stayed here twice with my wife. Once in a premium room and another time in a premium luxe room. Rooms were clean and spacious. Modern amenities like Nespresso machines and I-pod docking stations are available. Electronic blinds, air conditioning system and room lighting can be controlled using a bedside touch control pad or the television.
Tried their room service and it wasn't bad. Ordered sandwich which came with salad and fries and the portions were huge. The hotel spa is not bad too. Staffs were efficient and friendly. Overall, it's a wise choice if you're planning to stay in the city without the inevitable hustle and bustle.

We stayed here for 2 nights on a stopover on our way to Bali. Having visited Singapore in the past I have always been impressed by the standard of hospitality and quality of hotels in the city area. Fort Canning Hotel is situated on a large parkland site hosted in an historical building that is aesthetically impressive in its bold stature upon a hill in a comparatively remote area of Central Singapore. The grounds are vast and house many points of interest such as museums and national archives. It is a short walk to the quay and within reasonable walking distance to orchard road. However, the humidity and the geography of the hotel within the park can make this a little awkward and taxis are recommended to make this more manageable for getting around generally. The standard rooms are well kept and clean and provide good general amenities. They are smaller than expected and when compared to other, less expensive hotels in the area. Each room is full of mod- cons including touch sensitive lights, Nespresso coffee makers, electric blinds and doors to the wet room bathing areas. These are nice touches but feel a little unnecessary when you need to operate them every time you wish to use the bathroom or to let more light into the room. The pools are well designed and serviced and provide suitable relaxation and respite from the heat. The staff are friendly, helpful and service in the lounge area for food and drink was excellent. The evening cocktail/ bar waiter was exceptional and demonstrated an outstanding knowledge of cocktails and preparation; this was a highlight. There is nothing wrong with this hotel, it delivers well on all levels. It is clearly set up for weddings and events and can feel a little cold and formal if you are staying for pleasure rather than business. Knowing that other hotels in Singapore offer equal service quality, amenities and bigger rooms make it very hard to recommend this at the higher price charged. This is a shame.

Dear Gorbylicious,

Thank you for staying with us and for your comprehensive review.

We are so glad that you found much to love at Hotel Fort Canning, from the convenient heritage park location to the colonial building the hotel is in, the cleanliness of the rooms and the good room amenities, the mod-cons and the well-designed swimming pools, the friendly and helpful staff and the excellent service. We have shared your compliments with the team and they have been greatly encouraged, especially Voltaire, our evening bartender at the Tisettanta Lounge.

We are well liked by many of our guests for our unique features- a 86-room hotel sitting on over 100,000 sq ft of land located within a 18 ha city park on a hill. We are 10 minutes walk away from the major shopping district, museum district and the MRT station and many of our guests who choose to stay with us generally find themselves ensconced in the best of both worlds. We are sorry that walking amidst the humid weather in Singapore is not conducive for you.

Hotel Fort Canning won the 2011 Urban Redevelopment Authority Architectural Heritage Award as the owners and the architects have made concerted efforts to respect and maintain the design intent of the mid 1920's architecture and have kept the french doors to allow guests to enjoy the conservation and colonial aesthetics and full view of the luxuriant park or city, depending on the choice of room.

In tandem with this, close attention was also paid to protect guest's privacy without compromising guest's convenience. The hotel thus invested in a state of the art control system for lights, blinds and airconditioning that has been well appreciated by most of our guests. We apologise that you did not find it to your liking.

Our Deluxe Rooms have an area of 34sqm, which is generally bigger than the average room of a hotel of the same category. Many of our rooms present unique bathroom designs set against a picture-window offering panoramic views of the park or city skyline. Guests can savour the elegant settings of the rooms featuring fabulous items by award-winning furniture designer Poltrona Frau. All hotel guests will enjoy complimentary aperitif hour daily and wifi service.

We do have many repeat and long staying guests who thoroughly appreciate all the positive elements mentioned above plus the exceptional service provided by our staff.

We hope to be of service to you in the near future.

Best wishes,

Amy

My family (2 kids, they are 1 & 3 years old) stayed in HFC (Hotel Fort Canning) from 28~31 Mar 2014.

We checked in at about 2200 and we just took few minutes to finish the check in process. The staff promptly arrange the room to us.

It is the room in G/F. It is very nice & cozy. My 3 years old son loved the easy chair very much!

The staffs in GlassHouse Restaurant were very friendly and helpful to my little guys!

The pool is comfortable and user friendly for family like us.

The Taxi calling services is very efficient.

Will stay again in HFC next time to Singapore!
