Hi guys out there,

I have a recommendation for you. Have been staying in Matchbox The Concept Hostel for while, what I can tell in 3 words: Clean, friendly and cosy. In he heart of Singapore city, walk distance to China Town, Clark Quay, Outram, Raffle etc., and a few steps to Club street and Ann Siang road give you diverse options from casual eating in hawkers or finer-dining on Club street.

Love the loft over here - spacious for either parties or a corner for your own.

Forthcoming staff. You will feel welcomed over here. Would recommend!

Cheers,

Dinh

Took note of the hostel while i was working in Singapore, and in the recent past i have had the opportunity to stay at this hostel. The first positive thing about the hostel is that the staff is extremely helpful, very accomodating to meet the needs of the people staying here be it tourists, students or even working professionals. The hostel unlike many other tourists hostels is not the noisy kinds, it offers you your own space. I have on many occasions chosen to get my work done here at the hostel because it is one of the quieter places. Also being centrally located, it is extremely convinient. Totally recommended!! Value for money!!

The hostel is in fantastic location in an awesome part of Singapore. You are within walking distance from two MRT stations, 100m from the amazing Maxwell St Hawker stalls and 100m from the lively (but expensive) Ann Siang Hill and Club St. The two temples are also close by and the awesome Smith, Pagoda and Temple streets.

Two highlights for me was the coffee shop down the road which made dynamite Kaya toast and half boiled eggs, and more than adequately provided our caffeine hit for the day with some good Iced Coffees. The Chinese Heritage centre was also fantastic and probably the best 10 bucks I spent in Singapore.

The hostel itself was clean and lived up to the descriptions we read online. The workers were overly helpful and had a love for the city which was infectious. The pods worked really well.

If you are looking for a party or social hostel, this is not the place as they place can border on eerily quiet, possibly a by product from the pods. Also, there is not really much of a kitchen if you plan to cook, but with all the cheap food around, there is probably need to cook.

Enjoy Singapore :)

Easy to find from the mrt station from the airport. Receptionist's where very helpful in telling where to go or what to do to maximise our short stay. Only downside was the air con wasn't quite up to scratch if u where furthest from the unit (which we where); still can't complain for the price, both me and my girlfriend are happy to put our stamp of approval on this hostel :)

This was not a good experience for my friend and I. We checked in for one night and when we entered the room it was the size of a very small bathroom except for that there were 10 bunk beds crammed in there. There was air but it was hot and sticky and the room smelled like mold. The towels smelled like a dog had pissed on them (to say the least). The bathrooms were mixed so the privacy is little to none. But, I guess if you are backpacking and you dont mind not having any space or privacy than this is an ok place for you to chill. Basically the pictures on the website seem to be a bit deceiving. The ONLY good thing I can say about this place was that the staff was very kind and the location was amazing. For my friend and I it was not worth it to stay for another evening there no matter how much of a budget we are on.

If your looking for something cheap but not wanting the usual hostel, this is one of the better hostels in Singapore.

Great location, near MRT, food and shopping as well as Chinatown.

Staff are very helpful and polite. Unlike Wink hostel they did provide free towels and bathroom amenities.

The condition of the hostel appears to have been overlooked over the last few months. My light in the room did not work, the light behind the bed only worked on one side, the AC while on full blast the whole day never cooled the place off, especially the top bunk, and the splattered residue of some sort of liquid on the walls was not too enviting.

The mattress was a very normal thin foam matteress that seemed to have a life of its own. The relaxation room with the massage chair is well worn as well and hotter than hades.

Bathrooms are excellent, somehow giving great privacy in a coed environment.

Overall matchbox hostel was a good place to stay on a budget but not up to the rave reviews in GQ and on other sites.

I believe Wink hostel has them beat by a margine

Matchbox is located in a quiet and clean road just off of Chinatown. It's close proximity to Maxwell Rd hawker centre is a bonus for cheap, authentic Singaporean/Chinese and Asian cuisine.
The hostel itself is very clean and tidy, and never felt crowded, even though I was in a 10-pod dorm. I really enjoyed the good night's sleep being in a pod afforded, and having your own reading light and charge point without disturbing anyone was great.
The hostel is situated round the corner from two metro stations, and there's a simple free breakfast on offer.
My only complaint is the website advertises 'laundry and drying facilities which you can use for free' which isn't true, you have to pay for it. So take it off the site if you are reading, Matchbox!

All in all very nice place, helpful staff and well situated. Not cheap, but as with all hostels you usually get what you pay for.
