the hotel room has got good ambiance and layout. and it's located not far away from the MRT at a walkable distance. however, the staff was not friendly at all when i was staying there. me and my friends can't even get extra towels or pillows!

the staff/hotel need to work extra on their customer service.
definitely not going to stay there again.

My partner and I stayed here for 6 nights. It was our third visit and Ms Charmaine Ong and her team are still as friendly and helpful as the first time we visited a few years ago. The hotel has wonderful charm, beautifully restored and lovely furnishings. We were upgraded to a junior suite, which is a large room with comfy chair, big bed and comfy pillows. the room is kept spotless. Included in the room rate is complimentary water daily, shower robes and slippers, free wifi (no problems with the wifi either). Breakfast used to be buffet but now they cook your eggs to order so they are nice and hot - our only criticism was that the sausages served with eggs and bacon tasted terrible and the fruit platter was a very small serving. Also the gentleman in charge of the breakfast room was a bit grumpy! But these are minor concerns. The hotel will provide a shower room after check out if you have a late flight. The hotel is close to Lavender and Bugis MRT stations and also buses running along Victoria Road and North Bridge Road, highly recommend buying a tourist pass if you are visiting, for example $30 for 3 days on all forms of transport, you can buy them from Bugis station. We love staying at the Sultan and will definitely stay there again.

I made The Sultan my home base during a four night stay in Singapore and I'm glad I stayed put. There are a few things to love about the hotel:

1. Architecturally, the hotel is stunning. It's a boutique hotel built by combining several colonnaded buildings of the Arab Quarter. Arab flavor abounds inside, from Venetian arches to mosaic pattern tiling. It makes for a sleek and surprisingly modern decor. It also helps the hotel, like the city, is spotless.

2. The rooms have all the amenities. Unlike other hotels in Singapore, you're not paying an arm and leg for amenities you'd expect to be complimentary. Here, you're taken care of.

3. The staff is very welcoming. I arrived with a backpack and two days of hiking grime from Malaysia. Even though this is a somewhat upscale hotel, the front desk staff welcomed me heartily, offered me ice water on arrival, and walked me to my room knowing I was exhausted.

4. The location is perfect. Close to the metro lines and walkable distance to the Arab Quarter, Little India, Chinatown, and the eastern portion of the CBD.

If there is one thing that keeps the hotel from being "great," it's the breakfast. Runny scrambled eggs, tough croissants, and dried out fruit aren't exactly a continental breakfast.

Pros
- CLEAN
Amenities expected in nicer hotels (toiletries, teas, espresso machine, fridge, safe, cable TV, iron)
- Good location (lots of restaurants, 10 minute walk to Lavender MRT, steps from bus #7 that goes straight to Orchard and to Dempsey)
- Friendly, helpful reception
- Good breakfast with eggs selection
- Feels roomy for Singapore
- Nice bed and linens
- Great shower

Room for improvement
- Chincy towels
- Can be a bit noisy in this area
- AC could work better
- Mediocre wifi

This was our 6th time in Singapore and we've finally found the hotel we'll be going back to!

I recently stayed at this boutique hotel in the Arab Quarter from May 4 through May 11
This is a cute colonial building with some rustic shops around and numerous eating places of different ethnic styles
A very old market feel in the mall a couple of streets away
also a couple of picturesque mosques as well as the Mustapha
shopping centre open 24/7 for just about anything at cheap prices
The staff were very courteous and helpful
The hotel is walking distance to a couple of MRT stations and taxi stand
The hotel restaurant is reasonable and staff friendly and efficient
Great value for money

The Sultan is trying to be a Boutique up-market hotel in the fashionable heritage area of Singapore. The hotel is in fact 4 old buildings converted to a single entity. When I went there first time in 2013 I did not stay but had a drink and small eats on the super roof terrace. This time the terrace was closed, permanently, a huge disappointment. Much of the atmosphere was gone. The location is good for access to the local restaurants but a bit of a trek to any MRT station and I used buses and taxis.

The room I had for 4 nights was on the ground floor and looked out onto the alleyway between the 4 buildings which is a public right of way and people walked past. I could not open my curtains the whole time I was there as I did not want the people looking in. I asked for an alternative room and was offered one with French windows directly onto Aliwal street and declined it on security and noise grounds. I felt much less secure in this hotel than any I have stayed in anywhere in the world in the last 4 years. With public access right outside the room it was also noisy at some times in the night.

The smallish room itself was well equipped and modern, a good TV (that had a poor selection of TV Channels - No BBC World or CNN), a good bed and a shower room with a rain shower and a good supply of towels etc. Free WiFi worked well.

The breakfast was a disgrace, a very poor buffet selection and a plate of eggs, certainly NOT up to boutique standard. After the breakfast experience I did not eat one evening meal there. The restaurant is very average in décor and the service down-market, not boutique at all

The room had very poor lighting in the bathroom and totally inadequate supply of wall-sockets above the desk for connecting electrical equipment. International travellers have at least 3 electrical appliances to plug in and do not want constantly to get down on hands and knees to plug in and unplug them relying on the one available socket.

I found the staff OK but certainly NOT up to boutique standard in their style, service or eagerness to serve. VERY average. I am aware the hotel was cheaper than others but I expected a lot more from the website and from the PR. I did not choose the cheapest option I might have done. I felt that the hotel was either very poorly managed or was cutting corners on many things or near to financial collapse.

I will not be going back again and will not recommend the Sultan; I am very disappointed.

Room Tip: Avoid the ground floor at all costs

The Sultan is a lovely boutique hotel constructed of a series of renovated shophouses. The rooms are mostly small (mine was a Japanese platform bed) but was all comfy. Solid wi-fi, good A/C, but breakfast left much to be desired. Overall location is good - proximal to MRT, Arab Street and Bugis
