“great location & price”
Reviewed 16 July 2013

This hostel was perfectly located to MRT, restaurants, shopping and nightlife areas. The rooms were average. The common room area was un-airconditioned and smelt like feet. However the downstairs reception area was a nice cool place to sit and use the wifi. There were many facilities - hot showers, 3 computers, outside sitting area and free breakfast/tea&coffee. I would definitely visit here again

Stayed in this hostel for three nights while visiting friends. Couldn't have found a better place for the price in this area IMO. Really friendly staff give you the heads up on where to eat locally and there's always someone on the desk day and night.
We stayed in a twin room with air con and it was fine. Not sure about the dorms though...
Only bad thing was the bathrooms which left a lot to be desired... Make sure you have flip flops with you! Breakfast isn't great but you can get toast and coffee and its free. WiFi was great and also free....

This was a budget trip so we decided to book a hostel. We actually reserved for another inn right across City Backpacker but somehow, the online booking agency messed up our reservation although we had a confirmation (but that's another story). When the hotel staff of our original hotel inquired from City Backpacker if they can accommodate us, the guy there (Romie) said he could - so we ended up at City Backpacker. It turned out to be better than our original choice.

The staff were very easy to talk to. Our room had a view of the street and although it was right on Hongkong steet, a busy commercial area, it was not at all noisy. Excellent location, you can just take a short walk to the bus station or Clarke Quay MRT station. There's a big mall nearby and of course, Clarke Quay is no more than 5 minutes away. A 7-11 store is beside the hotel and Chinatown is within a short leisurely distance.

The place is quite secure as it has its own entrance protected by an electronic lock - the other inns nearby share a common stairway access. During our stay, the two common toilets and two common shower rooms on our floor were enough for all of us. They had running hot water too. The WiFi connection sometimes got weak but we were able to use it when we needed (we would sometimes have 3-4 gadgets all using the internet simultaneously). The air conditioner worked great.

The room is clean, as well as the sheets, blanket and pillow cases. Although our family room was typically small, we didn't feel cramped because of the room lay-out and the nice view from the tiny veranda. The cabinets and lockers inside the room also helped make things tidy for us. We had a TV inside our room but it had no cable service - you could plug in a flash drive though and watch your own movie.

Two comments though: First, our room's overhead light was not working so we had to make do with the reading lamps and the outside light (we always forgot to inform the front desk so it was not looked into during our stay). Second, the wall between our room and the next room was some sort of thin divider and when the people in the other room talked a bit loud, we could hear their conversations in our room.

We will definitely consider this when we visit Singapore again. I think it's good value for the money we paid.

I and my friend stayed here 1 night, it's very easy to look for, near Clark Quay MRT Station. A dorm room with bunk beds, when your bed above take a slightly motion, it'll be noisy for for sleep.
We have own handy lockers but the toilets and bathrooms are slightly dirty, look like don't have anyone clear regularly.

Btw, cheap price, good location, warm welcome and something above is better in the future, we'll come back.

I stayed 3 nights in this hostel during april 2012. It has excellent location near the river (and not far from the famous Merlion). My room was clean, shared bathroom also. Working air conditioning, comfortable bed, advantageous price, good wifi...I dont need more:)

we stayed here for 3 nights in a family room the location was good very close to the MRT and and walking distance from some attractions .it was great to have coffee and toast available in the kitchen to start our day.Air con worked beautifully The mould in the showers around the shower caddys and and on the door frames along with used sanitary items poked into the brickwork inside the showers were unsightly and avoidable considering how clean the rest of the hotel was.I would have marked my stay as excellent otherwise, The 7 eleven next door sold moderatly priced beer and other needed items .

Me and my fiancé were staying for just 2 nights in Singapore and found accommodation was so expensive so we decided to stay at the city backpackers on Hong Kong street!

The place was easy to find and we were welcomed by a lovely man in reception! Cannot remember his name but he was from Bangladesh! He got us checked in early so we could start exploring!

Room had 2 single beds but for a 2 night stay we didn't mind! It had tv, air con and was spacious! Very basic but for just sleeping it we found it to be clean and ideal for sleep!

The place was very secure and you could only get in when using your own key fob!

Showers and toilets were ok, clean enough but again basic! If you were staying in the dorm downstairs your bathroom was outside which I would of found to be a problem but you could always go up the stairs to the next floor to use the cleaner showers there!

City backpackers is located 5 min walk from Clarke quay station and in a fantastic location! We walked to Marina Bay sands along the riverside and took in the sights of Singapore! Lots of restaurants and bars to choose from! We caught the train to Orchard road for some shopping and found the transportation was excellent!

The man on reception gave us directions to Singapore Zoo and helped us find our way and also let us leave our luggage safely until we had to leave in the night! He was very very friendly and made our stay very welcome here!

I would defiantly recommend this place to people who are looking for somewhere just to sleep and spend most of their time exploring!

Save your money on expensive accommodation and stay here!
