“Great Hotel with Amazing Views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 January 2012

This is a very belated review, as my husband and I stayed here in April 2010. But we had a great experience, so - as I return to posting on Trip Advisor after a long lazy pause - I wanted to give the Mandarin Oriental Singapore a 5-star review.

The service was great. Upon our arrival (we'd been in Thailand the previous 10 days) we discovered that there had been a glitch: the hotel's reservation system said we had only reserved for 1-night (the following night), but we had our printed confirmation of a 2-night reservation. Complicating matters, this was when the Icelandic volcano was erupting, grounding flights, so many European guests had been stranded and the hotel was overflowing. Nonetheless, very smoothly and with no fuss, the agent at check-in upgraded us to what he had left: a 1-bedroom Harbour View suite with balcony. It was gorgeous! Modern and tastefully decorated, with a stunning view of the Singapore skyline.

The terrific breakfast buffet was included in our room rate. It was the largest buffet setup I've ever seen – both in terms of the many options and the number of tables. There was plenty of delicious food, something for everyone.

We've stayed in 3 different areas of Singapore, and I like the location of the Mandarin Oriental. As long as you're willing to hoof it a bit, it's walking distance to both downtown (Merlion Park, Clark Quay, etc) and the new Marina Bay Sands complex. The various Esplanade shopping malls are right there, and it's a quick cab ride to Orchard Road.

The Mandarin Oriental has about twice the number of rooms as the Four Seasons and feels less 'intimate'. But it still offers a high level of service and the views are really amazing. Overall highly recommended!

Room Tip: It's worth it to pay for a Harbour View room!

A truly exceptional check in experience. We were immediately whisked to our harbour view room on the 16th floor, where the receptionist, Daniel, went through the paper work whilst serving us jasmine tea. We were at the end of a celebratory trip which our agent had advised them of and they couldn't have made us feel more special. We thought the wine, fruit and chocolates were a fabulous gesture but this was topped by the rose petal filled bath and the champagne at breakfast the following morning. The service provided by the staff is absolutely exceptional. At breakfast on the second day the staff knew exactly what juice and hot dring we had ordered the previous day and asked if we wanted the same. The concierge remembered our names and everyone from the porters, pool staff and waiting staff couldn't have been friendlier or more efficient. Breakfast was the best we have ever had anywhere. The choice and quality of food is beyond description other than to say it catered for every taste and every culture. The rooms were exceptionally clean and comfortable with everything you could ask for. The pool, spa and fitness facilities were all of the highest standard. Around the pool were private curtained "cabins" with their own sound controls, fan, lighting and universal plugs. Just one little hiccup. We wanted to use the remainder of a phone card and asked to be directed to a pay phone. There was not one and used our room phone having checked with the concierge that there would be no charge. He rang the hotel's operator and we were told that there would be none. On checkout however we were billed $10 although this was quickly removed when we complained. Overall, a truly remarkable hotel with the highest standards of service.

Room Tip: High floor for the best view

We got a two nights for the rpice of one night deal through American Express Centurion and included many other extras. Because of late arrival we had room service sushi which was of good quality and arrived within 20 minutes. Buffet breakfast was excellent although staff sometimes made small mix ups with delivery of tea etc. Also had dinner in the Japanese restaurnat and again freindly staff and good food.

Great location, AAA+ service, the BEST breakfast buffet I have ever seen in my life and well appointed rooms. I do not have one complaint about this hotel. It was a great experience. We were travelling with bmy husband's work and whilst the hotel is ideal for business, it was also fantastic for catering for our baby. The staff made sure she was comfortable by providing her with a beautiful cot (not a cheap travel cot) and pamper package of baby products and slippers (so cute!). Plus, their room service menu even caters for babies and toddlers.

Room Tip: Ask for harbour view.

A few girlfriends and I travelled to Bali and Singapore this year in a rare break from our families. Whilst we stayed in some great places during the short holiday, the highlight had to be the Mandarin Oriental in Singapore. What a great place for the last few weekend of our holiday. Cocktails at Mortons were a highlight. Get in early as the bar starts filling up around 5.30 in the afternoon. The view from the rooms was phenomenal and whilst we were there, we were treated to a huge firework display over the water. Go. You won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a view of the water.

Arrived on the 3rd January 2012 for 5 nights at the Mandarin Oriental. Although our check in was fairly late we still received the highest level of service and a very warm welcome. They showed us around our room and told us where to go in the hotel for a late snack. The food served at the bar along with the view was amazing and we were even given a complimentary slice of chocolate cake! The room was spacious and well equiped with a wonderful view. The only slight complaint was that the bed was on wheels and if you are prone to tossing and turning it can feel a bit wobbly. However saying that they did offer us another room to try to assist but in the end it was a very small issue. The breakfast at Melt was perfect with far too much choice and again the service was excellent. The pool was a welcome break from the heat and the service again first class especially from Andrea. The staff and quality of the hotel made our visit truly wonderful and we did not want to leave.

The Mandarin Oriental Singapore is up to the high standards one expects from the brands. It is not new but, having been well maintained, ages gracefully. It is a solid option in a city well endowed with efficient 5-star business hotels.

The lobby and common areas are functional with no particular charm and no atmosphere. The hotel's architecture is built around a huge atrium, which feels cavernous and does not invite to hang around. On the plus side, a well-rounded offer of restaurants (international cafe, steak house, Chinese, Japanese, bar, all of excellent quality) and a nice swimming pool.

The rooms are average in size, decent but outclassed by competitors such as the Conrad, Fairmont or Ritz-Carlton. Equipment is standard for the category: flat-screen TV, fast Wifi internet, good storage space, but no espresso machine. Internal decoration is bright and airy, not overly luxurious. The rooms facing the Marina Bay enjoy very attractive views.

Where the Mandarin beats competition is in the quality of its service, which I consider to be the best in Singapore. My experience was flawless, from check-in (fast and personalized, in the room itself) to room service (smooth and attentive) through restaurant service (personnel is friendly and calls guest by name).

Location is central but there is no street life, despite a recently improved environment thanks to the Esplanade nearby. Walking to the colonial district takes a good 10-15 minutes, either boring in underground passes, or sweaty in the Singapore heat. The subway station is on the Circle Line, not very well-connected. One ends up relying extensively on taxis to commute to the rest of Singapore.

Room Tip: Go for Marina Bay view
