“We liked this hotel...”
Reviewed 13 December 2012

After our long overnight flight from Heathrow we land at Changi in the now early evening and transfer to the Hotel Miramar with the minimum of fuss. We were staying 3 nights on our outward journey to Oz and 2 nights on our return.
We email the hotel a week or two before our arrival and request a river view room on a non-smoking high floor. We are given a room on 10 which was perfect. There is a busy eight lane highway below but you can barely hear the traffic. During our stay we requested a late checkout (2pm) no charge. The hotel gave us exactly the same room for our return stay which was very pleasing, and another late checkout was requested and provided. They have two rooms on 5 that you can use to shower or change after check out, on a first come first served basis. The service at the Miramar is excellent; the staff can’t do enough for you.
We had a standard room which they call a deluxe twin and it was very nice.
There was the usual tea & coffee making facilities and mini-bar (expensive). A complimentary bottle of water for each guest is supplied daily. We found the tap water fine to drink. Shampoo and shower gel, slippers and robes are provided. And the room has an easy to use electronic safe.
A petrol station with 24 hour convenience store is right next door, handy for small packs of tea bags and fresh milk to supplement the room supplies. The store sells sandwiches and hot pies and the booze is a reasonable price, a large can of Tiger around S$4.60. Booze is quite expensive in Singapore generally and you will pay around S$11- for a pint of beer in an ordinary bar. A Singapore Sling at Raffles will set you back S$28-
We never ate at the hotel so can’t comment on that. We always had breakfast at the Kith Cafe which is opposite the hotel on the far bank of the river. Cross by the road footbridge and then cross the river bridge and it’s on the left corner. We loved it here sitting outside with the morning joggers and the young ex-pat wives and their well behaved little children. Eggs on toast S$7.50 and very nice. In the evening we sometimes ate at the Ba Bar Black sheep which is along the river. There are lots of bars and restaurants along the river.
The Miramar is at Robertson Quay and the busier Clarke Quay is around 15 minutes’ walk along the river to the right. Take it slowly during the day as it is very hot and humid. The local ladies often use umbrellas / parasols to shade the sun and it might rain in the late afternoon.
Taxis are reasonable and very plentiful, but we mainly used the yellow Singapore Airlines hop-on hop-off bus that stops right outside the hotel, it is S$12- a day or S$6- if you can show a SIA boarding card.
The downside of these buses is that they only go the one way around the circuit, but that’s not a major problem if you plan ahead. The very popular Botanical Gardens are one of the first stops after the hotel.
There is also a free Singapore River hotel’s shuttle coach that calls at Orchard road and Clarke Quay. Get a timetable from reception but best mention it to the bell desk as they will ring the driver to make sure he calls in for you.
We thought Singapore was fabulous and that the Botanical Gardens had a very big wow factor, especially the National Orchid Garden, S$1- if you are 60 or over. It was lovely wandering around Raffles Hotel and gardens as well
The Miramar has a small tour desk and we booked the Night Safari through this at S$50- each. We could have done it slightly cheaper ourselves but it just made life easier, and Joyce our tour guide was delightful.
At this price level I would recommend the Miramar...

We move on to the Hyde Park Inn in the CBD Sydney...Please see my review if interested.

We stopped at the Miramar on a stop over for 2 nights.

The cheapest way to get to the hotel is by getting a train from the airport which is just a couple of dollars. There is 1 change but it will be quite literally the easiest train/MRT change you will ever make. Get off at Outram station and then get a taxi. It was less than $4 Sin for a taxi.

Upon arrival the staff were friendly and efficient on the desk. The staff brought our bags up.

The room was of a good size with the usual sort of facilities such as tv, tea and coffee making facilities, safe, hairdryer etc.
The bathroom was also a decent size with bath and shower.

Booking through a travel agents recommendation I was hoping for something based near the city center/Orchard Road but these were a little too far away really. On the plus side there was a garage next door for snacks and drinks etc and across the river there were a number of nice restaurants which made dining out easy and the area have a nice feel about it.
Cloest MRT station was about 15 minutes walk.

The hotel does have a bar, drinks as per a little pricey but thats a given in a hotel. They also did some complimentary snacks when we were in there.
There is also a restaurant too but we didnt try it.

Outside there is a bus stop where we caught the bus to Orchard Road. The concierge will be able to help you with which bus. Also the Red Bus City Tours bus can be caught from outside the hotel too. The hotel did a package of the tour bus and flyer for $56 I think. There was a saving of about $8 for the flyer doing it through them.

We recently stayed at the Miramar overnight before our return flight home. We found the
reception staff helpful, the hotel room was clean and the beds were very comfortable. While the buffet breakfast was OK we really enjoyed the evening buffet meal which was of a high standard, with a good selection of both European and Asian dishes. There is a free shuttle bus service to Orchard Road and Clarke Quay, and there is also a bus stop right outside. The hotel swimming pool is set in nice gardens, and although we did not use it we certainly would have if there had been more time. We would definitely stay at the Miramar again.

Based on previous review reports, I had expected much more of this hotel. The building is not impressive. Its location is not ideal (20 minute walk to the nearest MRT station in this humidity!). Price/quality ratio might be reasonable for Singapore, but still expensive for what you get.
Staff is not extremely friendly nor super-efficient.
Breakfast buffet is a joke. If you want to have breakfast at 6.45 (breakfast starts at 6.30), all the tables are already or have already been occupied and nobody is cleaning the tables. If you find a table, there is no cutlery, nor can you find it at the buffet. The third morning, I found an explanation: the cleaning team starts at 7 am. And indeed: a little bit later, service is a lot better. Food is not spectacular. The buffet looks impressive, but - I am an easy eater - there was not much to eat. The buffet room is not very cozy and super-cold. People coming out of the elevators with their luggage constantly disturb your morning peace as they have to cross the room.
Rooms are worn around the edges. Clean, yes; quiet, yes; coffee maker, yes; but it does not feel like the hotel I had expected for relaxing and working.
The bar is nice (happy hour 3-8 pm!), and the Ikoi Japanese restaurant is a must. There is a business center for printing out your boarding passes.
Wireless Internet is very expensive, slow and you have to re-login all the time.

We have just spent 6 nights at the Miramar and had a great holiday. Our rooms were lovely and the food in the Fern Tree Restaurant was of a goos standard. The staff couldnt do enough for you and were always there with a smile.

We would go back there as it was in a great location as well.

Just spent 3 nights here at the Miramar in Singapore and was impressed by the attention given to guests. It would be very hard to find better staff anywhere in the world. Everyone was very pleasant and attentive, well trained and efficient. It has been 35 years since I was last in Singapore and a great deal has changed, including this hotel but I do have recollections of staying here then and was suitably impressed even back then. I would not hesitate to return to Singapore in the future and would use this hotel again.

Room Tip: High floors are my personal preference and the lifts here are fast and efficient.

From the time we arrived the service made us feel as though we had our own servants. The cleanliness of the establishment was second to none. The food was unsurpassed.
There is nothing negative to say about this hotel and it's staff.
