Though Hotel Bencoolen is costlier than other decent budget hotels (value hotel thomson, fragrance chain) what works for it is the location, very close to the MRT (Bras Basah) a 24 hr kopitiam nearby and plenty of bus stops (Bus 36 goes to the airport). The breakfast is decent. The staff is outstanding in their hospitality, all through our stay they guided us on our excursions ( it was the chinese new year time, so almost everything was shut). It's quite an old hotel but maintained well. The bathroom was more spacious than what one would expect from other budget hotels in Singapore. The room was a little cramped, as would be the case in most budget hotels. Overall we had a great time, the construction wasn't much of a bother, once you can find your way to the hotel. But for those coming in taxis it might be a bit of a bother for the first time.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the higher levels

This hotel is an excellent place to stay when you are in transit through Singapore. Cheap rates , reasonable breakfast and convenient. Close to public transport . When we were there there was work being done on underground railway so access to the fron was restricted.

Room Tip: Rooms are on the small size so if more than 2 persons travelling I would recommend ask for two adjacent rooms

I found this hotel to be average, the rooms look a little old I suppose, but all I needed was a bed and a bathroom, and that is what I got, so I was happy. The receptionists spoke English fairly good, they were very helpful, they have an enormous supply of brochures with information on where to visit, there breakfast buffet was ok, not much of a variety but again, it's cheap so don't expect much. It's fairly close to the metro, 5-8 minute walk along bencoolen st then turning into Rochor road to get to Bugis station. :)

I never usually write these reviews but felt compelled to by the excellent service I received at this hotel.

Besides the hotel being clean and comfortable with a handy pool and gym area I found the staff were polite, very friendly and extremely accommodating.

With plenty of maps and brochures in the foyer they offered me helpful advice. They also have a secure bag checking service after you checkout that was super handy as my flight was at 1AM!

Would definitely stay again. Great place!

Room Tip: Try and grab a room on the 2nd floor as that's the floor the pool and gym are on!

Stayed here as part of a G Adventures tour. Having stayed at the V Hotel Lavender deluxe room the night before, Hotel Bencoolen was quite disappointing. The newly-renovated room was very tiny for single occupancy with not enough room to put both backpacks somewhere other than on the floor. The bathroom was clean but had seen better days with mold on some tiles and around the sink, the water temperature was only luke-warm but that's ok when you have 30+ degrees celsius outside. Since there was a honk concert played by a car this night/early morning twice for 20-30 min each time, my roommate and I had trouble sleeping, without the constant honking it was quiet, though. Breakfast was average. Location is great, right downtown, you can even walk to Little India and Singapore flyer!
