The Scarlet hotel, situated in Chinatown, belongs to the Small Luxury Hotel Group. It presents well, though seems to be beginning to tire and be in need of a freshen-up in some areas; not quite up to the expected standard of the group! Our “premium” room was compact (more space would have been welcome), meticulously clean and certainly adequate with tea/coffee making facilities, iphone docking station, free Wi-Fi and a comfortable bed. The bathroom was entirely adequate.
A very good front desk with the staff welcoming, helpful, and willing to assist at all times during our stay.
Unfortunately, the Maxwell Street Markets have recently closed for 2 months for renovations, so we missed the famous “chicken rice”. We tried other restaurants, but probably due to our personal food likes and flavours were left disappointed. However, right under our nose had been the rooftop terrace “Breeze” bar/restaurant on the 4th floor of the Scarlet hotel perfect, where we had dinner for our last two nights. A lovely place to relax, enjoy delicious food and linger under the stars and lights. Reservations are necessary, as it seems locals have also found this little haven.

The Scarlet is a lovely, true Boutique Hotel in one of the most lively and interesting areas of Singapore - Chinatown.
We stayed for 5 nights in a Deluxe room - yes it was small but the website makes room sizes very clear. The room was clean, cozy and excellently appointed - the bed was large and comfortable, excellent standard of TV and free WiFi and quality furniture. Cozy and quirky would be our main thoughts.
I would say that a paint job and perhaps a new carpet would be due sometime soon in our particular room but all hotels rooms need this attention eventually and Im sure this will be forthcoming in a hotel where attention to detail is so evident.
Our welcome was excellent, with (despite the last review) bags being whipped out of the taxi practically before it had stopped and cold flannels and a warm welcome waiting at reception.
Breakfast was a highlight. The service exceptional and both the buffet and ala carte options of high quality and more than adequate range and proportion.
I am delighted to announce that (unlike the previous reviewer) I had no problems with salt.
The downstairs bar and restaurant (although not used for eating) again presented comfortable and stylish surroundings with the usual attentive service.
Didnt try the rooftop bar and restaurant but will look forward to that and our next visit (hopefully!!)
All in all, a hotel that was difficult to leave, although the staff even made this special with tea & coffee being brought to our room for a very early wake up call and even an offer of breakfast at 3.30am!! Not something that you would get at many hotels.
Thank you to the Scarlet and her staff for an excellent stay - highly recommended!

When arriving by taxi at night we had to take our own bags out of the trunk and carry them into the lobby whilst the doormen were sitting on the opposite side of the road watching. The reservation request for a twin was ignored and room could not be changed upon arrival. The roof terrace bar was reserved for non hotel guests and no chance to get up there during the entire stay. Breakfast was most definitely the worst I have ever seen! Most trays and bowls on the buffet were empty and unappealing, so we opted for an a la carte breakfast which was small and not very tasty. I had to ask three times for a salt shaker as none of them worked (clotted wet salt). When indicating this to the waiter she told me to use a toothpick to unclog the holes. Unfortunately there were none on the table and my request to get one remained unfulfilled. Amazing! Upon check out I found out that they had charged my credit card at check in with 60% above what the total hotel bill should have been as a security measure I was told. Probably acceptable when being informed beforehand, but not as a secret policy without letting the guest know. This is 3 star at the most and not even a good one. A very poor example for a boutique hotel!

Tired of the 5*/6* international chain hotels on Orchard, and wanting something a bit different and exotic and something more of a boutique hotel flavor, I decided to try my luck with The Scarlet Hotel in Chinatown. Having read the reviews on Trip Advisor though, I had my high hopes. Sure enough I was not disappointed.

The hotel is in an interesting historical building. I had the Premium Double and the room was a good size (I was traveling alone) and interestingly furnished. I think it’s voted number 2 most romantic hotel in Singapore on Trip Advisor and yeahhh it did come across that way (too bad I was traveling alone ☹)... I won’t put it into words; you just have to experience it all with your senses.

The bathroom was a good size and modern. The view out of the window was not to die for but at least it didn’t make the room feel claustrophobic. The bed was very comfortable. The shower felt good. Bathroom amenities were of good quality. The wifi was decent.

The location was in Chinatown, just around the corner from Club Street with its many interesting restaurants and bars. I found the neighborhood fascinating. Going anywhere else with a taxi was not far. But then again, Singapore is a tiny city state.

My room rate didn’t include breakfast so I didn’t have breakfast nor lunch nor dinner and opted for going out instead. However, I did try the lychee martini at the bar downstairs while waiting for the taxi and it was good.

This reminds me, about catching taxis at this hotel… quite inconvenient. I wasn’t sure whether it was the start of the F1 race that was creating traffic havoc all over the city or because of the hotel’s location, but not many taxis passed by. So if you are waiting in line for a taxi to take you somewhere, you may end up waiting for a very very long time. Problem was easily solved however. I asked the front desk in advance to order a taxi for me at a time that I needed, and voila! taxi was there right when I was ready to leave. Hotel reception should have mentioned it from day 1 so I didn’t need to go through the frustrations on day 1.

Overall, good interesting stay. I would definitely go back.

After getting off a 12 hour flight from manchester airport we arrived at the Scarlet Hotel to start the first leg of our honeymoon. We got a bit of a shock on arrival as we could not check in until after lunch and it was pouring down with rain outside. We were left to sit and wait in the bar until the room was ready!our room was quite small but ok for a two night stay- we were in it really!
Hotel was in a good central location for all the sights of Singapore. Breakfast was serviced at the roof top bar ( lovely). The roof top bar also turned into a little twinkling bar on a night. It gave us the chance to see Singapore from above.
This is a very handy hotel for a short sight seeing stay.

Dear Heatherairey85

Gracious greetings from The Scarlet! Thank you for your recent stay with us and congratulation once again on your marriage. We undertand that your are tired after a long flight and do apologize that we did not have a room for you upon your arrival. As our standard check out time is at 12 noon and check in time is at anytime after 2pm, we tried our best to get the first room available for you to check in. You may like to consider to reserve the room from the night before to guarantee a room to check into upon your arrival should you have similar flight schedules in future. Most hotels do not guarantee an early check in as it will depend on the availability on the day of your arrival.

Nevertheless, we do hoped that you've had a wonderful time in Singapore and at The Scarlet!

Warmest Regards
Carolina Lee

We stayed at the Scarlet over the Singapore Grand Prix weekend and were highly impressed by the place. The rooms are smaller than average but their website does highlight that fact and they have done a great job when they restored this hotel to it's former glory. We used the outside sauna, the rooftop bar and had breakfast there and all were great. The whole feel and look of the place screams luxury with an element of naughtiness. Just fab.

Unique! This boutique hotel is in an interesting historical building with easy access to the subway, historical walks, Chinatown sights, restaurants and a food court that is not to be missed! The rooms are small, but, hey, it's downtown Singapore. They are artfully and elaborately decorated, even sensuously one might say. Lots of red and black. Lots of rich finishes. The linens are sumptuous and the baths are classy. Every detail is beautifully presented. Even the morning paper is placed in a British leather pouch on your door. This hotel knows how to market itself. The staff was friendly, attentive and well-trained. Great discovery and a great value.
