“We felt really welcome”
Reviewed 11 September 2009

This is a remarkable hotel. A modern approach in the middle of chinatown, a good mixture of values. We loved the modern decoration, but most of all we loved the staff at the reception: friendly, competent, attentive, joyfull, very refreshing! Clean is not strong enough a word to describe the state of the (bath)room and (bed)linen. And all objects in the rooms of quality brands. Our only note is that breakfast could be better. But as we have enjoyed Singapore very much, we are already looking forward to stay with the New Majestic again.

After reading some very positive reviews on our travel guide, and Trip Advisor, we were very excited about New Majestic Hotel. After our three-night stay I admit we were a little disappointed.

The hotel was fully booked during our stay, which means that, contrary to other customers who wrote reviews, when we arrived at 7am after our 12-hour flight we were not given a room to freshen up, since no room was avaiable. Instead we were told to take a walk in the neighbourhood, or use their laptop, till 11am... I wish they had let us use the swimming-pool but we were not given the option. Other customers had macaroons, doughnuts, apparently. Well, this was not the case with us (I guess it's useless now they are so trendy they are 1000% booked). We only had a glass of fresh water to wait for 4 hours.

The room (number 311) was very stylish, with a nice painting on the wall, Jieldé lamp and other industrial antiques artefacts. However it was very small, and we were badly surprised to discover there was actually a steep ladder to go to the bed. The bed was very pleasant, with a good mattress and plush linen. However, we could not sleep well durint two of our three nights there. First night we were waken up by lovemaking noises, second night by a business woman making phone calls to her office at 3am local time. Either they were both very loud, or soundproof could be better.

We had cold water, not hot water at all, during our two first days. When we mentioned it, we were told it was because we completely stopped the air-conditioning system. And indeed, we had hot water during the last day of our stay. I supposed most customers don't mind the air con and don't have this kind of problems! However I find it strange to lnk air con and hot water system.

Location, in Chinatown and very close to a subway station, is very convenient. We could easily and quickly go to Orchard Road, Little India, Clarke Quays, Botanical Garden...

Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable.

All in all, if I stay again in Singapore, I will probably try another hotel. I think it's too expensive for what it offers.

I chose this hotel as it was on the quieter edge of Chinatown and it was recommended by Wallpaper*. The staff were very welcoming on arrival and this continued throughout my stay. i was particularly pleased when they offered me a room (at no extra cost) to shower and freshen up in after I checked out as I had a midnight flight from Singapore.
The hotel has a good fitness centre and a nice, small pool. The hotel's bar makes a good stop before exploring the neighbourhood restaurants.
A great antidote to the big chain hotels that dominate Singapore.

My husband and I went back and forth when trying to decide on a hotel for our quick, two day stopover in Singapore. We loved the New Majestic instinctually from seeing it so often in our travel and design magazines. But, the reviews on tripadvisor are definitely not what we wanted to see. We knew that Raffles and/or Orchard Road area would be less than appealing for us- we would not think of staying in Times Square when we travel to New York or Union Square in San Francisco, so we always try to stay away from the touristy/shopping areas when choosing a hotel. However, that left us with few options. Although the Naumi's location wasn't great for what we were looking for, that was our other option- it seemed like a great boutique option, and the reviews are great. However, something kept drawing us back to the New Majestic.

In the end, we are so glad we chose the New Majestic! It was exactly what we were looking for. The detailing in this hotel is absolutely amazing. We were extremely satisfied with our room- especially for a boutique hotel, the cleanliness throughout the whole hotel, including our room, was excellent. We stayed in a garden room, with the romantic claw foot bath outside. On our last morning we drew up a fantastic bubble bath. The ambiance is just great- I definitely recommend this style of room.

The service was excellent- we arrived around two in the morning, and we were still able to have fabulous cocktails at the adjoining bar. Check in was fast and easy. The staff were friendly, accommodating, and charming. Throughout our stay, they answered our questions, made restaurant reservations and recommendations, and were generally very helpful.

The pool is amazing- we took pictures of each other from the peep holes in the restaurant, which turned out great! Both days we took a break from the city by lounging at the pool for two hours. The staff complied quickly with our requests for cold beers to be delivered pool side- so refreshing. On both occasions, we were the only guests at the pool. How fun!

The breakfast was great- excellent espresso. Gym was great as well.

On our last day, they allowed us to store our luggage, then when we got back to the hotel to pick it up, they let us have one last swim, then gave us a room to use to shower and freshen up.

We LOVED the location of the hotel- I would have been so disappointed if we stayed in the more commercial center. The street the hotel is on is filled with interesting restaurants, an awesome German wine bar (a must!), cute boutiques, and it's just a three minute walk to amazing Chinatown shops. We loved exploring the area. It really made the trip for us.

One final note- our water pressure was amazing in our shower, and we didn't ever run out of hot water, even when we filled our bath.

Please, feel free to ask any questions of me- this hotel is fabulous and I would not hesitate to stay there again or recommend it to fellow travelers!

Unique hotel with 30 individual rooms. The rooms have some great touches - complimentary doughnuts on arrival. Great tea and coffee facilities. Free soft drinks including water, apple and orange juice. Comfortable elevated bed with nice soft bedding. Great shower with lovely Kiehl's products. Powerful air-conditioning which you need in Singapore. Nice outdoor pool area and gym area.

Delicious food including the wasabi chicken and crispy duck. Great cocktails, offers between 5pm – 7pm served in the bar area , a personal favourite - Lychee Martini which comes with a yummy side nibble.

On our check out date and with a flight late that evening we were able to leave our luggage with reception who were then kind enough later that day to give us a room where we could freshen up and shower before the long flight home – something you feel you need having spent the last day cramming in everything you wanted to go back to and visit again.

Overall one of the best hotels I’ve stayed at to date.

Stayed here on our second night in Singapore. Really funky room, small but well equiped with glass cubicles for the shower and loo. Nice pool with portholes in the floor which is above the restaurant.
Pity we weren't told that there was a private function so the restaurant was closed - this was part of the reason for staying here. However we went to Ember which is part of Hotel 1929 and had a fabulous meal, can't recommend it highly enough, excellent staff. Would certainly consider staying there next time!

The restaurant was good, the rooms were good, liked the quirkiness of the hotel, but I`m fast becoming a fan of slightly offbeat hotels anyway!

They were nice and considerate, made me something from outside the menu too.

Alcohol is a little expensive though.
