This hotel is located in the red light district but it wasn't a problem at all. There are a lot of restaurants and food courts around and it is close to a bus stop and not so far from a MRT station.
The room is tiny, and you can hear people walking through the corridor all the time.
Internet is good.

Not at all fancy, clean or welcoming. Barely had a receptionist... He didn't seem too keen on his job.
Rooms are grubby but cheap. Alright for a one night stop off bit not a place you like to hang out in...

The room we stayed in was small and it had no window. Judged on the evacuation floor plan we could see this also counts for a lot of the other rooms. In general the prices for hotels in Singapore are too high for the value that you get, but the room was clean, there was free bottled water that was replaced every day, the room had a tv with nice choice of channels and the hotel has free wifi that works properly. The airco has a remote control and the room was isolated well enough that the airco can be turned off at night (a benefit of having no window?). There was a second mirror in the bedroom with extra lights, that was convenient. There also was a travellers plug, hairdryer and water cooker in the room.
What I missed was enough space for my luggage (I had a big suitcase) and my girlfriend had a weekendbag. The fact the room had no window or balcony wasn't really missed, because we were out most of the time anyway. The staff was helpful, but they didn't succeed in arranging a taxi for us that could bring us to the airport after it had rained very hard. If you want to check out late, they suggested us to check out in the morning, leave our luggage in front of the check in counter and book a "service room" for 10 dollars for an hour to take a shower before our return flight.
All in all it's been a good experience because of the extras like free wifi, bottled water, and option to book a service room on the day of departure.

Honestly I would never imagine staying at hotel 81. I live at the bottom of the road...but had an argument with the misses and decided to get out the house for the night. It is what it is. Basic accommodation but it is clean with good aircon. Friendly staff and a good sleep. For the 79 dollars paid I would recommend this place as I did enquire at the Santa grand who wanted 200+ for the night and the room was no bigger. Great value.

You got of what you pay, ok for transit traveller, good room to sleep, friendly reception staff, accessible to food trip. You can walk to market of souvenirs and dry goods , quiete at day and party party at night, accessible in the transport bus, ideal for low budget traveller. When you travel alone it is safe to come on this hotel but you have to know from the airport what means of transportation you are going to because its bit far from the airport but the good thing is you are in the middle of the city, lights and fun are here at night.

This hotel is OK for 1 person 1 night as the rooms are small, nowhere to hang clothes, no cupboards and little space for yr suitcase/rucksack. It is certainly showing it's age, the bathroom could have done with a good clean and the shower head holder was falling off the wall! The staff were friendly and helpful. Joo Chiat Road has girlie bars, lots of local and Asian food and international flavour. There are many gilrs ' of the night' and the MRT is far away so not suitable if you want to get down to Orchard etc.
I used it as it was the cheapest hotel near to Changi Airport so it served a purpose. There are 3 hotel 81 on Joo Chiat.

I was looking for somewhere cheap to rest my head between flights, as a solo female traveller I was a little wary about what I was about to put myself through. But honestly I can say that although having its little flaws it is definitely the best cheap hotel I've stayed in Singapore so far.staff extremely helpful and friendly. I walked the street at night and morning, got food didn't feel uneasy at all. The locals friendly and the food tasty and cheap. The room yes had a few little maintenance issues and the air con wouldn't turn off but the helpful staff gave me an extra blanket no worries! I liked the bed, although it could be possibly considered hard for some, my back was aching from the travel,so it actually helped relieve it somewhat. The bathroom is small but travelling solo it didnt concern me too much perhaps if you were travelling as a couple and with luggage it might be tight. The street is full of dining areas, bars and close to a convenience store. I will definitely stay here next time I'm in Singapore convenient and close to what I needed.tea and coffee facilities, water and toiletries included in room aswell as cable tv
