I am 70 years old and somewhat concerned about reaching the summit or crater of this majestic active volcano. I was so fortunate to use the company Antu Rios y Montañas with owner Joaquin and his two assistants Francisco and Nicolas. What a great time with patience and help to see the heart of the volcano and spewing magnum. I would highly recommend this company for a special memorable experience.

Grate experience
Might be dangerous, depending on the weather conditions
With Antu you are safe
Prepare your backpack a day before
Don’t bring too much water (one liter, is more than enough) and snacks you have no time to eat it.
Make sure you’re able to do it
Enjoy the day

Great hike. Unfortunately the weather do not cooperate for us. 180km winds prevented us getting to the top. Blowing icy snow without Bella clava or goggles didn't make any sense. There would have been no chance to observe the crater either

Since I am little, I go on vacations every year to the region of the araucanía, and one of the attractions that could not be absent, it was this: The ascent to the volcano for the national park villarica, a trekking of approximately at 6 hours to observe the crater, since always I have gone in summer , so always in sunny days with a precious sight, nevertheless they have recommended to me to visit it totally in the winter season to live through the only experience in the snow.
In the thekking also you can enjoy the apreciation of flora and fauna of the zone , and also observation of different native birds of the zone. It is necessary to use sports clothes and comfortable shoes to walk, to go sun screen, water, cap and camera.
.There exist several circuits or paths that you can do in the park, some of them can be for your account and others with guides of the park. But anyone that you choose, will be a wonderful experience.

This is 8 out of 10 physically strenuous. And it’s about 70% a mental test of not giving up. You’re going to be climbing for about 6.5 hours and each section is progressively steeper. You’re going to be tired and that foothold is going to give-way when you just put what you thought was all of your energy into that step. But keep going and it’s going to be worth it. The top of the volcano offers amazing 270 degree views of all the surrounding mountains. Not to mention down into the volcano itself. Have you ever heard a mountain ‘sigh’? This one does as it spews gas (and in one instance some ash) from around the glowing lava lake. The crater itself can only be described as an alien world. Steaming sulfurous pools that you can feel in your eyes and nostrils (if you take your gas mask off).

And if summitting Chile’s most active volcano isn’t enough of a rush, get ready for the sledding trip down. Don’t want to ruin the surprise here...but you earned this.
