“Good location and clean, but very unfriendly staff”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 April 2009

We spent 3 nights at Hostal Willy. It has a great location in the center of town and is very clean and comfortable as a hostal. The staff however were very dissapointing.

The owners dont live on the premises but eat there and after we showed up started putting restrictions on all sorts of things. You could use the kitchen only between 8 and 10 pm. Getting onto the computer was always an issue because the staff were often on it.

And the most annoying part - every time you moved in the common area, there was someone watching you as if you are a thief, either telling you not to touch stuff or pretending to clean up after you.

It is a shame because it is a really nice hostel, but I would rather go somewhere where we are treated as guests and not an intrusion.

Renamed Hostal RUKA HUENEY but the same owner and management and location.

Family run, well situated, Exceptional value for money, clean and comfortable with a very good breakfast.

The room was quite big with cable TV and a good bathroom. It was comfortable.

The hosts are extremely helpful. Highly recommended and very good value for money

We stayed here for one night - and that was plenty. Upon arrival, we found the manager and several friends/family glued to the television in the lounge - they all seemed surprised to see guests and watched us intently throughout our check-in process - not friendly, smiling gazes of curiosity, but rather off-putting stares. The manager (a middle-aged Chilean woman) did nothing other than show us the room and hand us a key - language barrier was no problem since my husband is Chilean /American and speaks fluent Spanish. Compared to receptions at other hostals and hotels throughout Chile, this was the most perfunctory and bordered on un-friendly.

The room was well-heated, but that's about the best I can say for it. The bed sagged terribly in the middle and the blue carpeting extended right into the bathroom, where it had become damp and a bit grubbby/ moldy from damp feet. The room (and other areas we saw) was fairly dark and did not seem to be well-maintained. We decided not to
have breakfast there in favor of a cafe down the road.

It is fairly common practice in Chile that if you are a foreigner and pay in US Dollars, the 19% VAT tax is waived. You have to provide
your passport details and a few other bits of information, but it is an easy thing and every other hostal did this. Upon leaving, the manager claimed that she'd never heard of this and that it is her son who deals with things like that. Of course, he was nowhere to be found, so we paid the extra 19%.

The price was in line with other hostals in Pucon, but for the money,
you can find much cleaner, brighter, and friendly accommodation.

Hostal Willy was recomended to me by a friend who stayed there a few months ago and loved it. I have to say that Hostal Willy was one of the best experiences I ever had. The house is small, clean and comfortable, with everything you need and the owners are friendly and they really care about their guests. Willy didn't only help me book trips around Pucon but he even stood up for me when a cab driver overcharged me. I was by myself there (female) and I felt very safe and taken care of. It was like visiting a good friend.

My wife (29) and I (32) paid 20,000 pesos per night for the room. We stayed in the room upstairs, which was spacious, furnished all over in beautifully worked wood, with en-suite bath room. The windows looked onto the neighbouring yards, not the volcano, but if you can't have everything you wish for, we came close.
The overall feel of the room was very pleasing.
The only place where it lacked compared to a decent hotel, for us, was that it did not include breakfast, which in Chilean hotels, is not a big affair anyway. Therefore, this was luxury, at a very good price. Internet access is free, when one of the two co-owners is not working on the pc. The hostel is a beautifully converted family home. The fireplace in the living room really made for a cosy, homely athmosphere. None of the owners spoke any English, and with my Spanish being basic, and my wife's almost non-existent, we nevertheless somehow communicated all that was necessary. They were extremely helpful in assisting with bookings for excursions, termas, finding a place to do laundry, and bus tickets. The owners were friendly, but not intrusive.

The location is great, just a block away from O'Higgins street, were many of the restuarants and outdoor agencies are.
The only strange thing was that one did not get a key for the house, so if you return too late and find the door locked, you have to knock loud to wake up one of the owners. This happened once during the 4 nights that we stayed. All over, the place was beautiful, clean and spacious. It was one of our best stays in our 3 week vacation, which included mostly hotels.
