“Better service than the big five star hotels on the lake front”
Reviewed 14 July 2010

Stayed for a week at this charming little B & B on top of the hill and overlooking the lake. Attended a conference in Puerto Montt and in the evening visited some of the other luxe hotels in the town(Puerto Varas) and in one brand new five star hotel we waited 20 minutes in an empty bar to get any service at all.

Whilst Aura is pretty basic and spartan the staff are super friendly, the little breakfast is ample, the rooms were warm (as it was chilly outside) and you always had a smile and help for whatever you needed. Bathrooms are small but so was the price, i think we paid about 1/4 of what our colleagues were paying in other hotels. We went shopping in the high street bought amazing cheeses and wine from a brand new wine store and had dinner in their breakfast restaurant, fabulous. If you are on a bit of a budget and not fussed about everything being spanky new then you cant go far wrong with Aura.

We did two days trips, he first around Orsono to the volcanoes with a driver organised by Aura, our guide was wonderful charming man, he only spoke Spanish but we understood enough to get the story. AFter the event was over we had one day to burn and went the other way to the nearby island the other side of Puerto Monnt (name escapes me) but well worth the day trip. We ended up going out on a small skiff to watch sea otters and penguins in mountainous seas..........quite the adventure but we were determined to see penguins.

If you want to visit the area on vacation you will not be disappointed, you can even take a ferry to Argentina across a lake about 90 minutes away but my travel colleague did not have a visa for Argentina so we headed to the penguins instead. I would say the area can easily keep you busy for a week. It was September and it was COLD, very cold. Not real night life in Puerto Varas that we could find a few bigger hotels and looks like the town is still developing at a fair clip.

I would hazard a guess we paid around US$ 50 a night for the hotel as it was booked through an agency and paid by my company but i recall it being around that price point.

Hotel website shows photos of a recently renovated place, overlooking the lake.
Those photos are misleading, and we were VERY disappointed to arrive at Aura and discover the rooms were not nearly in good shape as the lobby... They look like 50-year old rooms, that got a paint-job.

The first room they gave us overlooked the turbines of another hotel's air-conditioning system. We complained about the noise and luckily enough they were able to transfer us to a room on the other side of the building, overlooking a workshop that contributed unpleasant smells, so we could not open the windows...

On the upside: breakfast was splendid (you need to ask for eggs, but they are included), and the staff, although do not speak English, were kind and willing to help.

Bottom line, Aura is simply not worth the price: if it was half the price, I would probably highly recommend this place.

We arrived to Puerto Varas without a reservation and were extremely pleased to stumble upon Aura. The customer service here was the best we received ANYWHERE during our three weeks in Chile. Staff was accommodating (juggled existing reservations around to make room for us), helpful, friendly and went out of their way to ensure we had a pleasant stay. They even had breakfast ready earlier than usual for us since we had an early morning flight. The rooms are clean, extremely comfortable (best beds we slept in the entire time) and the location is great (one street above the main town square). On top of all of that, the rates were competitive and provide a superior value to the other options we found when arriving to Puerto Varas. Two thumbs up!
