In preparation for a move to the area, my husband and I spent a week staying at Bordemundo while we looked for a rental house and became familiar with Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt. I specifically chose Bordemundo for our home base during that week because we needed someone who spoke English to help us get started off on the right foot. We also wanted a place with a kitchen so we could prepare some of our own meals.
Javiera, the owner of Bordemundo, was truly the greatest part of our stay. She is lovely, warm, friendly, welcoming, and so very helpful. We became fast friends and realized within a couple of days that Javi will be a lifelong friend after we move to the area.
The cabins are well equipped with a fridge/freezer, gas stove/oven, countertop, microwave, electric water kettle, pots, pans, dishes, utensils, and sink. We had a dining table, 2 couches in the living room area that could also serve as beds, a bedroom with a queen, a second bedroom with 2 twins, closets in both rooms, a bathroom with shower, and a great wood burning stove for the cold nights.
We stayed in the middle of winter. Javiera will start the fire for you and you just have to feed in more logs through the night or you can start it yourself and the wood supply is always refreshed every day when the cabins are cleaned. The cabins are kept incredibly tidy. We felt like we were coming to the cabin for the first time every day when we returned.
There is good wi-fi and an amazing breakfast is available on request. We always had enough left over from breakfast for at least another meal.
The location of Bordemundo is great. It's on the edge of Puerto Varas so it's very quiet at night and the stars on a clear night are amazing. But the trip into Puerto Varas is short. That side of Puerto Varas has a small strip mall area with a mini Jumbo where you can find supplies for your cabin kitchen. There is also a Dunkin' Donuts, pharmacy, Japanese restaurant, pet store, and fishing outfitter in that strip mall area. A little further up the road you will find many of the most popular restaurants Puerto Varas has to offer. If you continue up the same road, you can park near Cassis, next to the lake, and explore downtown Puerto Varas on foot. Parking in that area costs 300 CP for 20 minutes (if memory serves). The cabins themselves are a short walk to a stretch of private beachfront on Lake Llanquihue. It's just breathtaking if you make the trek down there.
I think if you want to be away from everything, have your own space, yet still be within a short distance of Puerto Varas, Bordemundo is an excellent location for a great price. You can't have so much space, quiet, and access to the outdoors by staying in a hotel in town. Javiera can also give you contact information for a good rental car option.
Long story short, I highly recommend Bordemundo. Javiera could easily be the difference between a mediocre visit to Puerto Varas and a fantastic visit because of her warmth, her helpfulness, and her vast knowledge of the area.
