This place is in a student area about 10 minutes walk away from the centre. It is a safe neighbourhood that seems to have more atmosphere for me than the more well known tourist areas of the city. It is also great if you need to take a bus out of the city as it only 2 metro stops away from the Alameda station.
However it is not just convenience that made me enjoy this place. It is also the friendly atmosphere. It is run by Rodrigo and Nicole with the help of Juan and they go out of their way to help with tours and getting around the city but without any pressure and complete sincerity.
This was a first stop for me in South America and it was a great place to settle in and feel more comfortable.
The bedrooms are nice, big and not overcrowded. The beds are comfortable and they also have a terrace and balcony where they have BBQs.
I stayed in another hostel in Santiago in Providencia but decided to come back!

We arrived at 8:30pm after a long day of travel and were told that we couldn´t check into our room because the other people who were in there the night before still hadn´t left! We were promised that they would leave within an hour or two. Eventually we managed to get into our room at nearly 10pm, you can imagine how thrilled we were when we needed to get up at 4am for an early flight. The shared bathrooms were filthy. The place was really noisey. The guy at the front desk was really nice and a little too laid back. He was so nice that it was hard to get angry about the badness of it all. But on reflection we would definitely not go back and couldn´t recommend it to anyone. The only up side is that it is cheap and the location is central and close to bars and take away joints. But if you can´t even get in to your room then what is the point?

Room Tip: Don´t stay here

I satyed a couple of nights at this brand new hostel run by three friends in the University district. I had found thir link on www.hostels.com and chose it because its very convenient location, round the corner from where the CENTROPUERTO bus departs to the airport. On their presentation they say they are "ex-hippies".

Well... indeed, that's how their place feels like. On the day of my arrival, although the maximum capacity was supposed to be 18, there were... 34 people sleeping all over the place, from the attic to the living room. Although it probably came from a generous offer to help stranded travellers, it felt to me like they were only interested in cashing easy money.

My room was quite big and... empty, the bed was good but didn't even come with a bedside table. There is a mirror on a chest of drawers but its height didn't fit with mine (6'). The room faced the patio (backyard) and on my first night the barbecue (asado) organised by the owners filled my room with heavy meat smoke... not to mention the very loud conversations til very late in the night. Not the best option for the vegetarian traveller with intense working schedule that I was.

The shared bathrooms were NOT clean. Used towels abandoned on the floor and a shower that leaked on the first night and broke on the second...

The general impression is not positive, although the owners are good people. Breakfast is OK. I hope they will improve their standards in a near future.
