Beautiful cathedral with many sections to worship and pray. The ceilings are very elaborate as is the front alter.

The inside of the Cathedral is pretty impressive considering how old it is. The area is very touristy and crowded. But it is worth a visit to get an idea of the place and its surrounding other locations.

Once again, the Catholic church has built another nice building. Lots of nice ornate altars made with material probably extracted by Mapuche slaves. John Paul II visited this cathedral with General Pinochet during the dictatorship. I presume consorting with dictators charged with crimes against humanity is part and parcel of being a pope.

The Metropolitan Cathedral is truly breathtaking. I was there many years ago in 1999!! (this date not an option) I recall walking in La Plaza de Armas. I also remember looking for tourist info on site, but could not find much. One thing I can say is that when I think of Chile and its beautiful people I remember this Cathedral quite well. Im happy to see through fellow tripadvisors pictures that it actually looks exactly as I remember it!! Chile clearly embraces their history, culture and I'm glad to see that they indeed take care of their precious architecture. Thanks to OldSalt45 I know am aware that it dates to 18th century! Trust me on this one, once you see this pretty gal in person, it will forever be stored in your memory!!

Have you ever seen a shoed horse? Not the traditional horseshoes, but on top of them! a plastic-rubber kind of sneaker!
The mounted "gendarmes"(police) told me that the horses are more silent and secure on the asphalt with them! So, ah yes!, the Cathedral is impressive and the square is full of delicious happenings... Just be ware of gatherings around some street performers... not the safest thing, ok?
