On our private tour of Santiago with Leo Cuzmar, he suggested we stop in to see the San Francisco church. We were so glad we did. Not only are there beautiful statues, but there is also dim lighting and without your flash it will leave you with amazing pictures. You can feel the spirituality of this church just by walking through it. It has a few different rooms adorned in gold. Definitely worth a quick stop if you are in Santiago.

We went to the main cathedral and were impressed as we are with most churches. However, we really liked this church for its simplicity. Take a seat and simply soak in the solitude. See if you can find the patron saint of animals. After you are done, the Paris Londres district is right behind the church and is a great place to get a drink and people watch.

We visited the San Francisco Church on Christmas Day which incorporated the Christmas Manger and transcendental Madrigal/Gregorian music. Being animal lovers, we enjoyed spending time at the St. Francis of Assisi shrine, the patron saint of lost animals. The notes and animal photos that others left were most touching and reminded us of not only our short time here on Earth, but those of our pets, both those who are here and now, and those who are dearly departed.

What a special place.

Its a beautiful old church in downtown Santiago, right by the O'Higgins avenue. Beautiful lighting and it was interesting to find a place by the Saint Francis statue where people put numerous pets/animals pictures to thank Saint Francis for an answered prayer.

I looked at the stone walls and I could not believe that they withstood some of the most powerful and destructive earthquakes over the past centuries. The church is 500 years old and the steeple has been rebuilt at least four times. The interior have been refurbished and restaured and carry signs of architectural intervention that date back to the 18th and 19th centuries, as the wooden insertion and decoration will betray. Most of the arches fell down during the earthquakes and have been rebuilt but still you can clearly see more than half the wall that is original and belonged to what it was the first colonial church in Santiago.
