“Modern design, great location, and respectable restaurant in a small package”
Reviewed 11 December 2013

This hotel reminds me of a smaller, more adorable version of a modern hotel such as the W, and the somewhat cramped feeling of European hostels. It pulls it off well, but if you are used to large lobbies, elevators fitting 8-12 persons and their luggage, and palatial in-room siting areas, this is not the place for you.

It is minimalist in its design, but still has the hues and textures that soften up modern rooms and make them more accessible to people who are not lovers of modern design. The small (~10 table) eating area easily meets the breakfast needs of guests. The bar is very small and not really meant for groups to congregate. I would describe the bar-restaurant area more as a café with well-thought out menu, but which is more focused on groups of two or three, than on larger groups.

We arrived at night, about 30 minutes before the kitchen closed, and were properly tended to and served a delicious meal. Still, after also having had breakfast, I believe the server/waitress is not up to par with the rest of the experience. She was efficient, although also distant and never smiled. Her service was in stark contrast to the young, energetic people who care for the bar and front desk. Especially Paulina, who was a fantastic front desk agent with a warm, caring demeanor and a wonderful smile.

We stayed in a room that overlooked the park and had a small balcony. Noise would have been an issue if we had been expecting a picturesque balcony in which to sit and watch people walking by. We understood this was a city hotel and got exactly what we expected, a nice place to look out over the park at night, but a place with bus and car noise during the day. They have invested in good doors and windows since the noise that did enter our room did not present a problem even though we were on a third floor overlooking a busy road.

In summary, this is a very good modern hotel with soft touches that will make it pleasant enough for to those who don't like modern design. It is best suited for couples or single travelers. The restaurant serves a much better variety of food than what such small hotels normally serve and has a decent wine list as well.

This is a small botique hotel in the best possible location for us, as first time visitors to Santiago. 75% of everything we wanted to see or do was within easy walking distance. A Metro stop is very nearby to reach everything else. This is not a grand hotel. The dimentions are compact but the contemporary interior design and space plan provide everything you will need. The beds are very comfortable and feature individually aimed reading lamps on each corner of the headboard. We really appreciated that the flatscreen tv had several english channels like CNN and Fox News. We couldn't find those anywhere else we stayed in Chile.

The hotel restaurant way exceded our expectations. The menu does not have a large selection, but the variety is good and everything we tried was delicious, cooked perfectly and presented beautifully. The generous breakfasts included in the room rate were cooked and presented with the same care as the other meals. The best Pisco Sours we had in all of Chile (and we had quite a few) were served in this hotel.

The most memorable aspect of this hotel for us, however, was the young, professional staff that seemed actually eager to answer questions and make our stay with them as pleasant and as comfortable as possible. When we departed, my wife wanted me to take her picture with as many of the staff as we could find on duty. They really made an impression on us. The larger more expensive rooms overlook the park which is a very nice feature. The smaller rooms are also comfortable and you can always go up to the terrace and lounge on the 4th floor and look out over the park.

Lovely place with very pleasant staff. So pleasant that after leaving Santiago for few days we stayed there after we returned for another night. They were very helpfull with airport transfer and had all the answers to our questions.

I can only add to what other reviewers have said -- this hotel is outstanding in all regards: small, local, well-located (near Plaza Italia and a stop on Santiago's fine Metro), and most importantly, a young, eager and well-trained staff. They are welcoming, professional and skilled: big hotels should train their staffs at this property. I had a billing issue which was resolved quickly, professionally and to my satisfaction by the manager. All Santiago hotels offer breakfast in the price: Su Merced's is prepared to order and good.
My wife and I stayed in the hotel for seven nights in early October so we had a good opportunity to observe the hotel. The hotel's web site offered a 25% discount for a 'no change' reservation which is a worthwhile discount. The rooms facing the park are louder with a better view -- choose whichever works best for you. The property is in walking distance of several good restaurants through a pleasant neighborhood.

Room Tip: The difference between rooms is size: I thought the larger room worth the price differential over t...
