I've traveled extensively (in fact, I'm currently writing this review at an airport) and spend about a quarter of the year in various hotels, resorts, and family-run accommodations, yet haven't felt compelled to write a review of a hotel experience...until now. My recent stay at Hotel Carmenere was one of the most memorable aspects of my tour of South American cities. It was the perfect mix of location, personality, style, charm, and customer service, and I loved every minute of it!
Beyond its tree-lined, Bavarian-revival environs and elegant exterior, Hotel Carmenere is an oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of downtown Santiago, which happens to also be an easy walk away. Hotel Carmenere was completely renovated from the remains of a 1930s family home. More than just a place to stay, it's a concept seemingly new to the city: an eco-conscious and locally-sourced business dedicated to a moral ethos that humanizes its workers. Not knowing what to expect, the staff welcomed me like family, and I was treated that way throughout my 5-day stay.
I was given an intimate understanding of the cultural and historical contexts that shaped modern Santiago (and, of course, Chile). Despite this being my first time in the country, I felt like I'd known this place all my life. The receptionists were knowledgeable and directed me to some of Santiago's best food and nightlife. On top of (or more appropriately, beneath) all of this, Carmenere has an enviable collection of organic wines from around Chile, all curated by the staff -- and boy were were they tasty!
The rooms were spacious, beds were amazingly oversized, and the bedding luxurious. The rooms exuded a simple, yet tasteful decor. The garden was the perfect place to hang out, chat with other travelers, and relay new cultural discoveries. All-day coffees and teas were perfect for guests in need of morning or midday pick-me-ups.
The small things -- care and attention to detail -- that make a stay so much more than just a stay. The hotel staff made it an experience -- one I hope to indulge in the next time I find myself in Santiago!
