The last hotel in a five week organised tour of Peru, Bolivia and Santiago, this place represented a lot of the worst aspects of South American hotels:
1) dated and tatty decor
2) poorly functioning lifts ( I was on the ninth floor and the lifts regularly refused to of further than the fifth)
3) zero noise insulation between room and rest of hotel and to the outside world.
4) no room ventilation so you had to have the window open and then it was really noisy
5) poor reception staff that didn't have much clue about anything
6) poor security. I heard someone relating a story about how a bag being held in reception had been stolen
7) rooms not ready at check in time which wastes previous hours when you are only visiting a place for a short time

On the plus side, it is in a good location for visiting the city.

I stayed on in Santiago for four extra nights. I didn't stay here any longer than I had o and so not regret it.

The Libertador is a largish hotel in central Santiago that caters to tour groups. Being Chile, it's not cheap: US$108 per night buys you a decent sleep and an OK bathroom albeit underwhelming water pressure on the upper floors. Breakfast, served in a big, dim room, is quite OK without being memorable. There is wi-fi only on the second floor, and no desks to tap away at one's e-mail! Notwithstanding all the above, the Libertador earned my average rating because, after we'd checked out, my wife discovered that she'd left behind her precious camera and, when I arrived back at the scene, huffing and puffing, it had been retrieved and was waiting for me.

Room Tip: Low water pressure on upper floors.

At the last leg of trip heading towards back home - I underestimated how badly I would need a basic and secure base to rest. This hotel stands as the most grungy, depressing, airless and nasty place I stayed in throughout South America. I cannot stress enough not to even consider this place unless you find the dour management's approach to assising guests with stolen items from thier locked room as amusing, the homeless and mentaly ill as colourful local characters or the appearance of management in their best house coat in the morning berating the middle aged sons for misdemenours or just the fact the place needs to be pulled down. No fan and jammed windows to allow for air just added to the fug.

I stayed at the Hotel Libertador in Santiago for the second time recently, and was surprised when I saw some of the bad reviews on here after my visit. I guess, as more of a backpacker, rather than a business traveller, I consider this hotel to be very comfortable.
Included breakfast was great, wifi worked throughout - better on the 2nd floor, in the lounge area though. Location is hard to beat, as on the main avenue, one block from pedestrian malls and a couple away from the plaza. Friendly reception staff and great value (You would pay a lot more for a single room in a backpacker hostel, and receive much lower quality than here).
Overall, I highly rate this place if you are looking for comfort and convenience. If you are want luxury, then you need to pay the extra to stay somewhere else!

The only redeeming feature of this hotel is its very central location as its located on the main street near down town. However this is also a curse if you happen to have a room on the street side as there is no air conditioning and the street is VERY noisy all night long - so you have to choose between trying to get some relief from the heat or the noise. The rooms are quite small so they get very stuffy.
If you speak Spanish the staff on the front desk are helpfull but I did see quite a few people who didn't speak Spanish have problems.
I would not stay here again.

Sited on the main Avenue Libertador B Higgins, the location is good for the pedestrian shopping area, for access to the metro and for walking to sites such as Santa Lucia Hill, San Christobel Hill, the cathedral, museums and Plaza de Armas.

Our room was on the back of the hotel and was quieter than those on the front but quite dark. There is no air conditioning in the rooms and even with the window open it was stuffy overnight. The room was small and for two people with luggage, there was not much floor space. Other rooms are bigger and have been refurbished, so maybe we were unlucky.

There is free wi-fi on the second floor lounge area and as tour groups seem to favour the hotel, this area can be busy.

Reception were not the friendliest or most efficient. I would recommend this as a base for a short stay in Santiago mainly based on location.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front for more space. Or ask for a refurbished one.

We have stayed in a number of hotels/apartments in Chile and this was our least favorite.

This was booked by our tour company but when you look at their prices there are better hotels to stay in for this price.

It is very basic with no a/c or fan. We didn't have an issue with the cleanliness. It was fine. It is dated though.

Elevators were ridiculous. They didn't work properly. Not an issue if you're on one of the lower floors but we were on level 8.
