Hostel Los Gaviotines
Reviewed 21 November 2012

I loved my time in this hostel! It's got a great atmosphere, and the owner, Jaime is welcoming and helpful. It's mostly college students, some local some from abroad. Great location. Close enough to places you'll want to see or to transportation to get there. There's wi-fi, hot showers, laundry and the rooms are clean. Very cutely decorated. And cheap, it's a great deal for what you get. The kitchen is nice. kind of small, but still nice!

I stayed with Jaime at Gaviotines for a month. The house is beautiful, all the rooms open up to a central patio and kitchen area. The place attracts quite of few chilean university students who come to Valparaiso from elsewhere. I thought this was a really nice change of pace from other hostels with only gringos. The owner, Jaime, is a really good person. If you are also a good person I highly recommend this place.

Where do I begin? This place is incredible! Hostel Los Gaviotines is all the vibrant colour, sounds and flavour of Valparaíso within the walls of a single building. It feels like home but the many rooms and living spaces ~dining room, TV room and three outdoor patios {!} make it feel like a small bohemian village. I will never forget attempting to play chess on the giant tiled board in the patio on the ground floor, celebrating my birthday with homemade pizza, many MANY authentic Chilean asados {BBQs} and the fantastic and diverse people I met there! Sharing a house with Argentinian, French, German, Spanish, Mexican, American and of course Chilean students, couples and families makes for a pretty unforgettable experience! The hostel owner, Jaime, is such a marvellous person ~I am yet to meet someone who knows more about the local area or with better stories to tell, he made me laugh countless times and is always willing to help out with anything and since his family is comprised of professional skiers, snowboarders and surfers, he is pretty much a one-stop shop for tourist advice on trips to ski resorts, beaches and places in the south of Chile such as Villarica and Pucon. The location is perfect for sight-seeing, catching a bus, taxi or metro and is really safe. I could go on and on about how great this place is! I completely recommend this hostel, whether it's for a weekend or longer, your trip will be all the better for it! Grande los Gaviotines!!

If you want to stay for a long time in Valparaiso, just go there. You will make a lot of friends (lot of them are Chilean students) and you will be just in the center of the city.

Hostel Gaviotines is a small and cosy hostel where Jamie provides you with a very personal experience.

I ended up coming for a week and staying for more than a month while I attended a Spanish course in Valparaiso. Jaime and everyone else staying there at the time made me feel at home straight away, even made a fuss about my birthday for me!!!! The perfect place to rest and recharge after a days activities in the area.

The terrace garden is a perfect spot to chill out, have a glass of wine at the end of the day... my other favourite part about the hostel was the the colourful courtyard that spills out from your private or twin room.

I would recommend staying at Los Gaviotines in a heart beat!!!

I stayed at los Gaviotines with my husband, mom, and our 2 year old son for new years eve. Jaime was a great host and we felt very welcome in the hostel. It's located about 2 blocks from Plaza Sotomayor which was convenient to everything. I prefer staying in hotels, but this was a fun experience for new years and even my mom and son had a great time.

Room Tip: We had private rooms with shared bathrooms. I think all of the rooms are set up the same way.
