Just returned from a tour of Chile, finished with a couple of nights in Hotel Acontraluz, wish we had been there longer. The staff just couldn't have been nicer; complimentary tea, coffee, cakes and even beer. Breakfast was continental type and plentiful. The hotel was spotless and rooms were very comfortable. The decor was very pleasing, rooms were airy with plenty of public spaces. No problem to do our on line check in and print boarding passes for flights home. Close to various cafés, restaurants and bars. Loved this place and hope to return some day!

My wife and I stayed here for three nights in a street-facing room. The hotel is in a great location overlooking the harbour and hills of Valparaiso in the Cerro Alegre neighbourhood. The front desk and breakfast staff were friendly and helpful. However, we found it odd that we were asked for payment upon check in. That was a first and not a very welcoming introduction. The owner was around but never introduced himself- again, kind of odd. We chose a street-facing room as the great views can be had from common areas and the price tag was more reasonable. We can't say that we loved our room. It was functional but small with a very uncomfortable bed. Mind you that this room is still pricey at ~ 190 USD. That being said, we found the value here questionable. The hotel itself is lovely but does not come out looking as "modern" as the hotel's website would suggest. However, the overall ambiance is relaxed and cosy. Breakfast was buffet-style and plentiful with good coffee and treats available all day. Overall, the hotel provided a comfortable oasis in an incredibly eclectic city that begs to be explored. As a base, you could do worst.

Really, really lovely hotel. Incredibly warm and personalized service. Like much of Valparariso, from the street, it doesn't look like much. But, once you enter, you see that the rear of the property looks out over the beautiful port and the other hillsides of the city. There are countless places to stay in town, but the location of this hotel...in Cerro Alegre...it fantastic. It is in the midst of the quirky, funky, eclectic scene, with street art galore, dogs (well-fed) running about, roosters crowing, and cats lounging on the metal rooftops. You have the perfect vista, and an easy walk down (aerobic walk up from) to the rest of the area. I booked a room on the top (3rd) floor, with a terrace overlooking the water. This was a very (but not entirely) private space, with some strategically positioned shrubbery separating me from a common terrace. The first floor consists of an office area, sitting room, dining room, music room, and terrace with tables. Wine appears to be complimentary all day, which saves some money. And the breakfast is generous, including scrambled eggs, hams, etc. Coffee (with an espresso machine) and nice bottled water are available round the clock.

The staff are exceedingly service oriented, from the front desk, to the breakfast servers, to the cleaning people.

The hotel has an old world feel, but has modern touches in the architecture (e.g. a contemporary multi-level staircase) that keep it from feeling stuffy.

If you book, know that you have access to a third-floor outdoor sitting area, so a terrace room is not a "must".

Recommended: El Concepcion restau;rant (had the lamb; it was probably the best I've ever had, with pureed eggplant and other veggies); Via Via (hotel and restaurant; not easy to find, but worth the search; had beef stroganoff and tomato basil soup); El Sebastian, one of Pablo Neruda's homes (a long walk or short drive from the hotel).

No need to bring a car to Valparaiso, but if you have one, parking seemed not to be a problem in the area.

I really enjoyed this city. Eccentric, lively, historic, with lots of delicious food, beautiful vistas, and wonderful people.

Room Tip: Depending on the price difference, a top (third) floor room is great, if it is facing the port. Beau...

We end up in this hotel but luck as it was the only one available that weekend and we couldnt have been happier. The hotel is wonderfully decorated and from its entrance you feel a cosy sensation that it is present as well in every room. The couple that own the place are really approachable, warm and helpful. They explained us how the restore the place to keep in original charm. This hotel is located a bit upper on the hill than the rest of the other boutique hotels therefore you get more of a panoramic view of the port that you can enjoy from the common terraces ,breakfast is served in one of them, or from your room ,some with terrace as well, if you are lucky enough to get one of those rooms. It is a bit pricy but it worth the try for a romantic getaway.

Room Tip: To get the full experience get a room with sea view. Rooms in the 3 floors have their own terraces...

Very nice older style hotel. Fabulous staff and great service. Breakfast was excellent and the availability of tea and coffee 24/7 was greatly appreciated. It was a little noisy off an on (as discussed in by other reviewers), but this was not a problem (maybe we were too tired each night); the age and style of the house is a great part of its charm and squeeky floor boards are part of the deal. Excellent location - but be prepared for some steep walks, and really good wi fi.

A beautiful hotel near several very interesting restaurants and easy walk to town centre. Decorated beautifully and lovely balcony with great view. Very generous breakfast included in price. Coffee, tea and snacks available all the time in the very cos y lounge.
However, stay alert for snatch and grab robbers in the area. Take the usual precautions. Our friend had a necklace snatched from her neck on the doorstep of the hotel. Staff were very comforting and helpful.
