“Acontraluz was a pleasure”
Reviewed 4 January 2014

Every positive comment you have read about hotel Acontraluz is true! Upon entering this quaint and spacious hotel, you are greeted by smiling and welcoming faces. The hotel is located on Cerro Alegre (hill), on a quiet street, overlooking the beautiful historic port area and colorful town. There are many good restaurants on nearby streets. The bedroom was very spacious and offered a beautiful patio. The rooms don’t have a TV, but you can get one upon request. We never cared to ask. The included breakfast was great offering scrambled eggs, cereals, toast, fruit and yoghurt. They happily held our luggage and offered a cold bottle of water for our walk. We joined a Tips for Tours which was great. We would highly recommend this quiet and very comfortable hotel and can easily confirm that their high TripAdvisor rating is well deserved.

The owner (we were told) is a former film director and the light and airy ambience of this lovely hotel, combined with fabulous views from the terrace on the 3rd floor and central location, make the Alcontraz a near perfect place to stay. The rooms are comfortable and common areas spacious and decorated with some lovely paintings and other artefacts. Some of the best restaurants and bars in Valparaiso are close by as well as access to other parts of town via narrow streets or ascensors (pulley lifts). Hard to think of a better place to stay!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the bay offer great views, however the 3rd floor terrace is available to all guests.

My husband and i arrived here after a long haul flight from amsterdam. It was a home away from home with a picture perfect view of the pacific and the hills. At night it was like being amidst a hill of lanterns. Great access to restaurants. Breakfast is superb, ask for scrambled eggs. The staff were very helpful, especially karin who helped us organise sushi delivered to our room when we were jet lagged and too tired to step out. The hotel is beautifully designed and maintained. Wide staircases, wooden feel. It is two houses joined together and the inside feels like a colonial house. In summary, personalised, caring and posh.

Room Tip: Pick a room on the second floor, room 207 has the best views, with an amazing terrace

Recently returned from a holiday in Chile and for the last 2 days we stayed at this hotel. I cannot praise it enough. The staff were wonderful, very welcoming, warm and friendly with nothing being too much trouble for them. The hotel is ideally situated and has a lovely terrace where you can enjoy the views of the city. The hotel appears to be an old house and is very charming with lovely decor and furnishings. My only complaint is that I was not able to stay another night. Thanks to all the staff for making this such a pleasant stay. I highly recommend.

Just returned from a tour of Chile, finished with a couple of nights in Hotel Acontraluz, wish we had been there longer. The staff just couldn't have been nicer; complimentary tea, coffee, cakes and even beer. Breakfast was continental type and plentiful. The hotel was spotless and rooms were very comfortable. The decor was very pleasing, rooms were airy with plenty of public spaces. No problem to do our on line check in and print boarding passes for flights home. Close to various cafés, restaurants and bars. Loved this place and hope to return some day!

My wife and I stayed here for three nights in a street-facing room. The hotel is in a great location overlooking the harbour and hills of Valparaiso in the Cerro Alegre neighbourhood. The front desk and breakfast staff were friendly and helpful. However, we found it odd that we were asked for payment upon check in. That was a first and not a very welcoming introduction. The owner was around but never introduced himself- again, kind of odd. We chose a street-facing room as the great views can be had from common areas and the price tag was more reasonable. We can't say that we loved our room. It was functional but small with a very uncomfortable bed. Mind you that this room is still pricey at ~ 190 USD. That being said, we found the value here questionable. The hotel itself is lovely but does not come out looking as "modern" as the hotel's website would suggest. However, the overall ambiance is relaxed and cosy. Breakfast was buffet-style and plentiful with good coffee and treats available all day. Overall, the hotel provided a comfortable oasis in an incredibly eclectic city that begs to be explored. As a base, you could do worst.

Really, really lovely hotel. Incredibly warm and personalized service. Like much of Valparariso, from the street, it doesn't look like much. But, once you enter, you see that the rear of the property looks out over the beautiful port and the other hillsides of the city. There are countless places to stay in town, but the location of this hotel...in Cerro Alegre...it fantastic. It is in the midst of the quirky, funky, eclectic scene, with street art galore, dogs (well-fed) running about, roosters crowing, and cats lounging on the metal rooftops. You have the perfect vista, and an easy walk down (aerobic walk up from) to the rest of the area. I booked a room on the top (3rd) floor, with a terrace overlooking the water. This was a very (but not entirely) private space, with some strategically positioned shrubbery separating me from a common terrace. The first floor consists of an office area, sitting room, dining room, music room, and terrace with tables. Wine appears to be complimentary all day, which saves some money. And the breakfast is generous, including scrambled eggs, hams, etc. Coffee (with an espresso machine) and nice bottled water are available round the clock.

The staff are exceedingly service oriented, from the front desk, to the breakfast servers, to the cleaning people.

The hotel has an old world feel, but has modern touches in the architecture (e.g. a contemporary multi-level staircase) that keep it from feeling stuffy.

If you book, know that you have access to a third-floor outdoor sitting area, so a terrace room is not a "must".

Recommended: El Concepcion restau;rant (had the lamb; it was probably the best I've ever had, with pureed eggplant and other veggies); Via Via (hotel and restaurant; not easy to find, but worth the search; had beef stroganoff and tomato basil soup); El Sebastian, one of Pablo Neruda's homes (a long walk or short drive from the hotel).

No need to bring a car to Valparaiso, but if you have one, parking seemed not to be a problem in the area.

I really enjoyed this city. Eccentric, lively, historic, with lots of delicious food, beautiful vistas, and wonderful people.

Room Tip: Depending on the price difference, a top (third) floor room is great, if it is facing the port. Beau...
