We took a quick getaway here from Santiago less than a week after the tragic fires hit Valparaiso. We are glad we went through with our plans.
The hotel is $10, 15-minute cab-ride from the central bus station, and is located about a 300 meter walk from the main road by Cerro Alegre and another 100 meters from a funicular. The rooms are exceptionally large, quirky and comfortable. We had one of the lowest priced rooms, and although we had a window, there wasn't a view. Still, the room was comfortable. Some have complained about the lack of TV, but they have free, fast wifi and our 2-year-old daughter was content with the iPad/Kindle. The restaurant is great and the view amazing --- especially in the afternoon. You see all the way to the harbor/coast and all the surrounding hillside. There is even a telescope to us. The food was good and interesting and affordable. The included breakfast was wonderful --- fruit, scrambled eggs, fresh-squeezed juice, homemade bread and jams. The hotel was glad to call a taxi to pick us up for our departure. The location is excellent. It is about a 10-minute walk using the funicular to the "plan" of Valparaiso; the immediate neighborhood is dotted with tiny restaurants and shops. The rooms were very clean and a good value. There was some noise from the restaurant above our room, but nothing noticeable.

Room Tip: All we can say is we had one of the cheapest rooms and it was large, clean and comfortable -- withou...

Hotel Fauna is a delightful hotel nestled into the valparaiso hillside among freshly graffitied, brightly painted, ramshackle homes, hostels and emporiums.
The exterior blends in with the corrugated surroundings but the interior is more akin to an art installation or modern museum. Solid wood staircases and exposed brick walls give way to discreet window openings on to quiet courtyards housing decorative murals, dozing cats and lush potted plants. The rooms are accessed via ten foot high wooden doors and our room (lucky 7) looked out over the distant bay. On an clear day this may have been a treat but on the two days we spent there the fog barely lifted it's underskirts. So we were relieved the view was the result of a free upgrade and not the usual extra $30.

The room was clean and furnished with simple but solid wood furniture, a unique hand painted mural over the bed, a pop-art armchair and 101 Dalmatian printed curtains (not quite wide enough I add!) hanging apologetically at the windows. It's a good thing they were cute.

Finally we had found a hotel with complimentary bottled water although we noticed several hours later there was no tv or radio in the room. Can't have it all I suppose.

After a three hour walking tour with tips for tours we tried a coffee shop then a cerveceria before retreating back to the hotel to head for dinner.
Expecting a cosy terrace meal, we were a bit surprised to walk in to the restaurant to see people wearing hats and costs as they tucked into their meals. The offer of an outside table was politely declined (although an inside table wasn't much warmer!) and we gratefully accepted the blankets offered with the menus.
The food was fairly good and service pleasant, whilst a student quartet from university catolica in Santiago played and sang - again for tips and not laid on by the hotel - which seems to be the norm.
The only glitch was the 'Medium' steak was rare and the Seabass also undercooked leaving it rubbery rather than meaty. Both were served with just potatoes which was a bit sparse for the price and perceived quality of dining experience. A 3 course meal for two plus a bottle of red wine rang in at 50,000 pesos and with the seemingly obligatory 10% tip on top it was the most expensive meal in 3 weeks of flash packing.

After the best nights sleep in a while, it was a relief breakfast was served until 11am so we just made it the next morning with 30 minuted to spare. Breakfast was a little different to the buffets we'd experienced and once seated we were given fresh orange juice and a fruit salad to start. Delicious as they were, I couldn't help hoping that the two chefs I'd seen in the kitchen were actually cooking something up and not just chopping fruit! Next arrived a bowl of scrambled eggs and a small plate of bread, jam, meat and cheeses. A little light if I'm honest and whilst trying not to sound like a greedy piglet, I'd become accustomed to something more substantial. The coffee was nice although when I requested a second one I think I detected a scowl. Just as with dinner the night before, there seemed to be a lot of staff per guest and most of them did very little other than flick an occasional menu over or deliver a plate or glass of something. I guess with the price of the hotel ($114usd) it can afford to over-staff but they should at least try to look busy and if they can't do that, they could perhaps practice their smiling :-) Their shortcomings were redeemed however by the girl on reception who was lovely, friendly and very helpful.
Overall whilst pricey, it was a good stay and I would definitely visit again because of the decor, tranquility and great location.

Our service and style pretends to be different, close and friendly, trying to be honest in our treatment everyday.
Regarding our restaurant, we are improving our service, because we are open everyday and not only for our passengers, giving us a big challenge.

This place is beautiful -helpful staff, lovely clean comfortable room and an outstanding restaurant with great views and fabulous food. The breakfast was wonderful too Our room was right under the restaurant which had live entertainment, so it was loud. Normally this bothers me but I just decided to not be worked up about it. There is so much to like about Fauna. My husband's cousin, who lives in Santiago, said to come here and she made the reservation. She also made a parking reservation for us. You will need that!! This hotel is on a "No vehicles allowed"lane so pay attention to the instructions on the email reservation confirmation.

Dear Patty,

Along with a greet, thanks for your comment, as we can see you enjoyed your stay at Fauna. About the parking space we only have available three ones, so you have to make a previous book. Regarding the breakfast this is served on the terrace with the best view of Valparaíso city.

We really hope you can come back and stay again on Fauna.

Gorgeous hotel, very sophisticated and unusual design that fit perfectly with Valparaiso, including the interesting wall paintings, on the side of the building and in some of the rooms. Beautiful linens. Lovely view onto buildings of Valpo. Location was excellent, too, right at top of one of the main funiculars. There's an interesting wine shop with a few tables right at the funicular. But hard to leave the hotel's terrace restaurant. Loved our reasonably priced lunch there. Delicous, three courses. Staff in restaurant and hotel could not have been nicer. So great design with unpretentious atmosphere.

Room Tip: The rooms with a city view are very nice. I think it was a superior double.

Hotel Fauna was very different to any other hotel I have ever stayed in, with exposed rock walls in the bedroom and bathroom and pieces of interesting artwork and antiques all over the hotel. The restaurant for dinner and breakfast was great, with a balcony offering amazing views over the city and ocean. There is no lift in the hotel but the reception staff carried my heavy bag down two staircases to my room for me and back up again when I checked out, so that was not a problem. Reception staff were extremely friendly and helpful and spoke good English.
Highly recommended, unless you have problems walking up and down stairs.

Hotel Fauna was a great find. Rooms were small but clean and with no TVs. We were on the lowest floor, their basic room. Although there was no window the exposed rock was beautiful and we found it a lot quieter. Our last night we spent on a higher floor and although had a lovely view was a lot noiser.

The breakfast was great with freshly made orange juice and baked bread. Coffee is also included but not the best. Their restaurant is amazing with views of the hills and a great choice for lunch, dinner or drinks. Service was slow but not a place you want to be rushed. However sometimes getting another drink proved quite hard.

The location between Cerro Concepcion and Cerro Alegre is great. The breakfast and food in the resturant were good and the terrace on the restaurant has great Valpo views. Comfortable bed. Our room on the bottom floor was a bit dark and I felt that although there was nice design to the room they werent overly practical, eg sink-tap which spays water at you, loo roll holder that doesnt keep the toliet roll on it, curtain that barely covers the window, minor things but a little irritating.
