“Good for one night, but many places are better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 October 2011

The most attractive places of Valparaíso are up on the hills. The flat area in downtown (called "el plan" in Chilean Spanish) has some nice spots too (el Puerto, for instance) but being very centrally located is not necessarily an advantage here. Puerta de Alcalá is central, but other hotels of the same price range are in much better locations, especially in Cerro Alegre or Cerro Concepción. We decided to stay here, just because what started as a daytrip became a whole weekend in Valpo and had no reservations anywhere else. Breakfast included a very good coffee, but the rest was the usual bread, butter and jam. The room was tidy and very quiet at night (something hard to find in "el Plan"), but every once in a while you could hear someone using a grinder in the kitchen during the morning. Nothing terrible, though. The bedcover was kind of worn and the walls needed a hand of paint. The bathroom was well equipped and extremely clean. The staff was polite but not particularly enthusiastic. We paid nearly 100 dollars for the room. Other hotels provide basically the same in nicer neighbourhoods for less. Bottom line: if you have time to look for a hotel, skip this one.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room!

We enjoyed very much our stay in deAlcal during a week in Feb. Perfect location, in spite of the "rush hour" at 4 am!, everything within a walking distance. Everything ok, rooms breakfast, What will stay in our memory is the friendly staff.
Can recommend to anyone out for exploring Valparaiso

We spent two nights in this hotel. The staff was very helpful. We had a problem with the first room they gave us - the door was broken and didn't lock. After they tried to fix the door, they couldn't so they moved us to a different room. The hotel is located in a very noisy area and it was hard to get much sleep. (I'm guessing this is true of many hotels in Valparaiso - it's just a large, noisy city). The room is basic, the bathroom was simply ok. Clean is about all you can ask for. Stay in Vina and take a cab or bus into Valparaso. Unless you like weird smells, too many people and loud autos continually blaring their horns.

We really liked this hotel, it has friendly staff and a very central location in Valparaiso. You just step out the front door into a small pedestrian mall and there is lots of shopping, cafes and restaurants in the nearby streets, a bus and trolley car stop next door and a short walk to the train station.

Rooms are clean and comfortable and there is free internet. The only disappointment was the poor restaurant meals, breakfast is ok but go outside for the rest.

The front rooms get some traffic noise so ask for one at the rear. A very good place to stay.

This was the most terrible hotel I've ever stayed at! Though this hotel is rated as a 4-star, it was inadequate in every way. The room was very noisy, the beds uncomfortable, the staff incompetent and the breakfast was inedible. I would very strongly advise against staying in this hotel.

Everyone at Hotel Puerta de Alcala went out of their way to make my two-stay stay in Valaparaiso go smoothly.

The hotel is small, with rooms built around an interior central core. The rooms themselves didn't have much personality, but they were very comfortable and modern, with televisions, hair dryers, and a mini bar.

The staff made my stay particularly nice. It was my last day in town, and they very agreeably stored my humongous suitcase while I spent the entire day traipsing around the city. When I returned, they did not seem at all offended when I used the lobby to partially repack and load up my carry-on for the long flight back to the U.S.

The location is perfect, in the heart of the city, within walking distance to most sites of interest. Cabs and buses to all points are right outside the door, as are shops, cafes, bars, pastery stores, and just about any other vendors you might need.

My stay was midweek, but the city's hottest nightspots are just a couple of blocks away. The rooms facing the street are therefore likely a bit noisy on weekends. The rooms facing the wall next door are very quiet, but have no view and are dark due to lack of sunlight. I opted for the quiet, since I didn't spend any daylight hours in the room anyway.

The food in the hotel restaurant was good, particularly the razor clams parmesan.

The worker at the front desk spoke fairly good English, but the restaurant staff did not. Since I speak fair Spanish, I had no problems communicating.

  • Liked — The location and the friendly, helpful staff.
  • Disliked — Lack of view from rooms on one side of the hotel (the quiet side).
  • Tips/Secrets — Consider whether you prefer a limited view, or a quiet room. It's either/or.
