“Grand Hotel Gervasoni”
Reviewed 17 October 2013

I had the great pleasure of staying at the Gervasoni Hotel for 6 nights from 4th October while in Valparaiso to attend a wedding. This wonderful boutique hotel was recommended by my travel agent and I couldn't have been happier. It is very charming and comfortable, beautifully manintained and is ideally situated. The staff were great, spoke English, and were always very friendly and helpful, even offering to go out and buy wedding paper for me. The hotel is perfectly located on Cerro Concepcion which is the older world heritage listed area of Valparaiso. There are lots of galleries, interesting buildings and great restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the hotel and I loved walking around and exploring the area. The Hotel Gervasoni overlooks the harbour and as well as the rooms having great views, there is a beautiful sunny terrace where I had breakfast and lunch which overlooks the port. The hotel also has a restaurant highly recommended by the locals. Breakfast was included and was really good with a selection of juices, fruits, cereals, breads, cakes, cheese, cold meats and scrambled eggs with ham. It was very nice conversing with other guests and the staff while enjoying breakfast on the terrace. I had room 11 which had a very comfortable king size bed, lovely period furnishings, good bathroom and a nice view of the harbour with balcony. The Concepcion funicular is right outside the front door of the hotel on Paseo Gervasoni which is one of the main viewing points of Valpairaso and provides ready access to the port and main part of town. Make sure you do the free walking tour of Valparaiso (Tours4tips) starting at Plaza Sotomayor, a short walk from the bottom of the Concepcion funicular and take a boat tour of the harbour. There is also ready access to the bus system and the metro for an excursion to Vina dal Mar

We recently visited Valparaiso and had an opportunity to stay at this wonderful old house converted to a hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful and for those of us with not too much knowledge of the Spanish language, they were able to speak to us, almost without exception in English. The bed was very comfortable - one of the best I have slept in. Their breakfast, which was included in the night's stay had a great variety and was plentiful. The location was good as it was close to many restaurants and the harbour.

Hot water takes a bit of time to travel from the lower level to the top floor. It would eventually appear but you needed to run the faucet for a while before it came.

The hotel does have wifi available.

I would recommend this place highly for those who appreciate old world charm.

Room Tip: There are steep stairs to some of the rooms but there are other options for those not wishing to cli...

Had a room with the view out the back onto the restaurants behind us, but we were convenient to the access for our friend with the broken ankle. A multi-level treat with many views, I found the bathroom very tiny (sitting on the toilet wasn't an option). Beds were comfortable and Wi-Fi was available in the room. Food in their restaurant was very tasty and well prepared, wine selection was good, and their breakfast buffet on the deck was great.

Room Tip: Higher floors or harbor side for the views.

We made our arrangements from the States hoping that the hotel lived up to its pictures and description and we weren't disappointed.

Upon arriving we drove, so the only option available to us was the entrance in the back which was a little off putting. We followed a small walkway to the front and this was where the hidden gem emerged. The hotel is built on the side of a hill with a view of a working port and a multilevel patio overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

We arrived early in the day but one of the four rooms we reserved was ready and Pilar offered to keep our luggage safe while we wandered around or went out for lunch and a cocktail.

When we arrived back a few hours later all our rooms were ready. Be warned there is no elevator in the building and one of the stairways going upstairs is pretty steep and narrow, but so worth it. The other stairway going down below to the lower levels is wide and beautifully polished. The rooms are beautifully appointed and some are down right quirky but most have views of the city or the ocean.

On our first night we sat on the patio overlooking the ocean and the owner herself Maria de la Luz made sure our every need was met. Wine, glasses, plates and Hor's deveours were delivered out to our table despite this being the winter in South America and the patio was seemingly closed. We could only imagine the patio in the summer as it was outfitted with a grilling station and beautiful tables and chairs. Maria also speant lots of time with us touring the hotel and giving us background on the building and it's renovation to a hotel. A really personal touch and we really enjoyed her company. The staff were also accomodating in that they lent us converters and chargers when ours did not work, but remember to return them when you are done.

The hotel restaurant is on the lower level and brings to mind "Private Club" "Harvard Club" kinda sorta...beautiful highly polished wood with old photographs and current ones in black and white in beautiful antique frames. There is a lot of the owner and her family represented tastefully on the walls. My husband dined alone one evening there and had a wonderful steak (the best we had in Valparaiso)and delicious wine recommended by the barman.

Finally, upon leaving for Argentina one of our group realized that they had lost their Scandisk from their camera. Being only an email away, as Pilar answers the email personally, we wrote to them and let them know we lost this item. A few hours later we were contacted through email as well to tell us that they actually found the disk and would send it to the USA as soon as they could. Wow! Really? That's really personal service!

We really enjoyed our stay here and the people who worked there really treated us well and responded to our every need...and we were a pretty demanding group.

Before I go I also want to add that the open air patio where events are held and breakfast can be had is spectactular. On our sunny days it was beautiful to sit and sip coffee and eat breakfast with beautiful views and light streaming in.

Thanks to all at the Gervasoni

I enjoyed my stay here: I found it very atmospheric which meant that it wasn't quite the 5 or even the 4 star experience throughout, due to the period ambience and features.
I was upgraded to the room at the top. Great views but the the time the hot water took to reach my level was excessive and would have amounted to a huge waste of water.
The hotel is very handy to the Concepcion funicular top end station so if you are travelling by taxi to the hotel from the central bus station, you only need to get to the lower end of the funicular, to reduce your taxi fare.
The upper floor is served by a very narrow staircase, so be warned, especially too if you want hot water rapidly. I was told that the boiler was in the basement.

We were so happy to stay here at this beautiful hotel in an exceptional area. We stayed in room 4 which had a wonderful view of the city and the ocean. The rooms were so clean and I loved the spiral staircase down to the bathroom. We had great service from the staff who attended for all our needs and were very friendly. In addition the breakfast was very tasty. I have stayed in valpo in the beginning of the year but the hotel we stayed at before was nothing compared to hotel Gervasoni. I have stayed in many hotels around the world but I think that this is my favorite and it will be hard to beat. I cannot recommend it enough

The best: THE VIEW. We took the top floor room, wonderful waking up looking at the bay, the seagulls and the sounds of the port. The room was very simple, (only one reading lamp), the bathroom was clean. They did not have body cream. The towels were not specially soft. The comun areas are charming, but the large old sofa was uncorfortable to seat on. The terraces have astonishing views. Be aware: to get to the rooms on the top floor you need to climb a VERY STEEP and narrow staircase. If you have mobility problems, the rooms on the upper floor are not for you. Be carefull, bedrooms doors don't lock authomaticly, make sure you lock your door before leaving.
Our friends took Other room with a beautiful view but has and spiral staircase to go to the bathroom. Over all: is a charming historic hotel, in an excellent location, and some rooms and the terraces have wonderful views. I was disappointed with breakfast. I expected something special, more sophisticated and detail oriented. We got scramble eggs, with slices of ham... and I was expecting Eggs Florentine or Benedictine, maybe some roasted sweet potatoes. Make toasts in the kitchen, do not have an old toaster in the dining room. Make sure that you received a written confirmation from the hotel for your reservation.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms with a view. Be aware of staircase when you book rooms on the top floor.
