Having spent almost a month traveling in Ecuador, I was feeling pretty tired after a week in the Rainforest. I decided to stay at Hacienda Rumiloma for a long weekend the plan was to recharge the batteries before heading back to Switzerland and I just couldn't have picked a better place.
My first encounter with the Rumiloma team began the week before I stayed. I turned up on a sunday morning and asked to drop off some baggage and also some valuables that were not required for my adventures in the Amazon. The front of house team couldn't have been more accommodating and I immediately had a good feeling about this place.
When I finally arrived the following Friday, I discovered to my delight that I'd been allocated the Amberleigh Casita. From the patio, guests can see llamas, peacocks and other native wildlife roaming pristine acres of Andean forest. There is also a spectacular view over the city. I'd heard the name Amberleigh once before but was amazed to learn that it was no coincidence that this room was named after the same racehorse that I had once won a few pounds on (Amberleigh House). Ask the effervescent owner and hostess all about it ..you won't be disappointed.
Amber is a truly remarkable woman and she and her husband Ossie have created a wonderful place here. They have both led rich and interesting lives and there are some fantastic stories to tell. So I would recommend that you kick back in the Irish bar she has created downstairs, crack open a decent bottle of whisky and just enjoy the craic.
If you want to arrange trekking or climbing adventures, Ossie is the ideal man to help. He is an accomplished and well respected climber and mountain guide and has all the local knowledge and contacts. If his schedule permits he may offer to guide you himself.
The food at Rumiloma is very very good, an interesting mixture of Ecuadorean classics with some novel twists. I will never forget the Cuy (Guinea Pig) that Ambers mother-in-law prepared as a fusion of South America meets China, it was served like Crispy Duck with 'pancakes' and a variation of hoisin sauce.
All the rooms at Rumiloma have been individually styled by Amber using a mixture of local furniture and interesting and quirky artifacts that she has sourced from all over the world. She has a very good eye and also has some friends who have interesting galleries in Quito with some fantastic souvenirs at reasonable prices.
I was very pleased to learn that many of the staff at the hotel come from the local town. They create a wonderful atmosphere and are just so keen to learn and improve. Embrace the fact that these guys are still learning whats's expected and it becomes easy to overlook the occasional misunderstanding.
I was traveling solo on this trip and Amber, Ossie and the entire team made me feel very very special and looked after me like a king. I was truly sorry to leave at the end of my adventure but I will definitely be back to Rumiloma the next time I'm in these parts. Thankyou !!
