Cafe del Fraile, along with Hasta la Vuelta, Senor and a few other restaurants and shops, is located in the former archbishop's palace in Quito's Old Town. The service is attentive (but only two other tables were occupied when we were there); the food was unmemorable. Cafe del Fraile has a touristy feel to it, but that may be because of the souvenir shops that are on the same floor. If you're looking for an okay place for dinner on the Plaza Grande, give it a try. You might not be impressed, but you probably won't be disappointed.

Wandered into this courtyard area for lunch on the recommendation of the tourist information. It was a lovely setting and there are a number of different restaurants spread over three floors to choose from. We sat on the balcony of this restaurant and enjoyed the view of courtyard hustle below. There is no outdoor view so if you are looking for that select a different restaurant. Our aiter was friendly and professional, providing excellent service.
We ordered shrimp in garlic sauce (camarones al ajillo) which was good but not great. It came with a lovely fresh salad and very good fries but was not close to the best version of this meal that we enjoyed in Ecuador. The Fraile sandwich was good and came on a lovely fresh baguette but was lacking accompaniments. Our final plate was calamari a'la romana which was unfortunately overcooked and over-battered. The ceviche as well as the salads and steaks were popular with the other diners on the balcony so perhaps these would have been better selections. Overall a nice environment but not great meals.

We had the plats duo and it was good, but not all that special. Chorizo was delicious as was the bread, but the rest was just so-so.

It looked like your standard touristy restaurant, I thought it's going to be overpriced, mediocre food, translated menu, only tourists eating there. A visiting friend wanted to go so I gave in.
Wow, was I surprised. All the food was expertly done and tasty, very even across the menu. I had the lomo in milanesa style and it was a big cut of meat, absolutely perfectly cooked. Our group also had the trucha a la plancha and it was also perfectly done, and a locro de papa soup, humitas, and an empanada. My generous salad was also nicely seasoned and upon request we were assured that it was 'disinfectado'. Great service as well.
I would have no trouble coming back here and dropping ten dollars again for a great meal.
Only the empanada was meh, but strangely that's been par for the course here in Ecuador. I thought this was the home of the empanada but they don't seem to know a thing about making one. I had amazing empanadas in Buenos Aires of all places, on every street corner for about 50 cents each, a third of what they want here.

We were happy with Café del Fraile--located well, friendly, good food. The churrasco and the grilled corvina were both just fine, especially for the first night in Quito, when we did not want to make a big deal of dinner. Reasonably priced, even the beer. Later we found less tourist-oriented places, but for this meal, it was just what we were looking for.
